Buying windows is a big decision, and quotes often look all the same. “Quality frame”, “thermal glass”, “installation included”: phrases that sound good but say little. This guide helps you see what is really written and compare calmly, even if you have never bought windows before.
We give no prices here. We give the right order of steps, so you do not pay for things you did not understand.
How to buy windows, step by step
1. Understand what you need. Before talking to companies, see what bothers you: cold, noise, water on the glass, windows that will not close? Whoever knows the problem asks better and pays less for what they do not need. It may help to read about PVC vs aluminium and double or triple glazing.
2. Measure and take photos. With approximate sizes and photos, any company understands the job. See How to measure your windows.
3. Ask for quotes you can compare. Two or three requests, all the same. This is the step that saves the most money and doubt.
4. Compare with a checklist. Same frame, same glass, same service. Only then does the price make sense.
5. Ask the installer questions. The way they answer says a lot about the way they work.
6. Get everything in writing. Warranty, timing, what is included and the invoice. Only then sign.
What order to read in
- How to ask for a quote: what to send the company to get clear quotes.
- Checklist before hiring: what to check before you sign.
- Questions for the installer: 10 questions, with the reason for each.
- Warranties and certificates: what to ask for in writing and which papers to keep.
If you already have quotes on the table, start with the checklist. If you have not asked for any yet, start with the first guide.
What changes the result
The window is only half the story. The result depends on the whole set: frame, glass, seals, installation and ventilation. A good window, badly installed, lets in air and water. So in any quote, look for what it says about the installation.
To understand where the price goes up and down, read How much do PVC windows cost. To see why performance depends on so many things, see Window energy efficiency.
The most common buyer mistakes
- Asking for “the price” with no sizes and without saying what you want.
- Comparing only the total, without seeing what is included.
- Deciding in a hurry because of a “today only” discount.
- Accepting “it has a warranty” with no time limit and no paper.
- Forgetting that installation counts as much as the material.
Places with their own conditions
Near the sea, with wind and salt, some choices change. See how in the example of PVC window installation in Peniche.
