About Braga
Braga is in the Minho and is one of the oldest cities in the country. It was founded by the Romans between 15 and 13 BC, as Bracara Augusta, and Roman ruins can still be seen in the centre: the theatre, the baths and the Fonte do Ídolo. The municipality has about 213 thousand residents in 183 km², spread over 37 parishes.
The city lies between hills and valleys, at heights from 20 to 572 metres. The centre sits on the Cividade hill, at 215 metres, and drops to the Cávado valley, to the north and west, and the Este valley, to the east and south. Around it rise the Serra do Carvalho, the Serra dos Picos, Monte do Sameiro and Monte de Santa Marta, with famous sanctuaries such as Bom Jesus and Sameiro.
Braga has a very young population: Wikipedia says about 35% of people are under 25 and that it is one of the youngest municipalities in Europe. The economy has metalworking, wood, construction and a strong software industry, and the crafts are famous for the viola braguesa, votive candles and linen embroidery.
Wikipedia notes that traditional farming is shrinking as the city expands. That is why Braga today has a bit of everything: historic and baroque buildings in the centre, recent apartment blocks and many detached homes on the hills and in the valleys.
What the climate of Braga asks of windows
According to Wikipedia, Braga has a temperate Atlantic climate, being between hills and the ocean. Winters are mild and rainy, with moderate south-west winds; north winds, the nortadas, can drop the temperature a lot, and in cold years snow falls. Springs are mild, with morning fog in the Cávado valley and thunderstorms in May. Summers are hot and sunny, with gentle east winds. It rains all year, which is why the Minho is called the Green Minho.
Braga lies between hills and the Atlantic, with rain in almost every season. The air is damp and fog closes the mornings in the valley.
A well-sealed, well-insulated window keeps the home dry and warm in winter, and helps in hot, sunny summers.
- North wind and sideways rain
When the north wind blows, rain drives sideways and the temperature drops. The gaskets and the fixing of the window decide how much air gets in. On the slopes of Sameiro and Santa Marta, where homes are more exposed, extra care is wise.
- Valley fog
In the Cávado valley there is morning fog and the air is heavy with damp. Cold glass and little ventilation combine and make water on the panes. A window with trickle ventilation lets air circulate without chilling the home.
- Winter rain and cold
Winters are mild but rainy, and in cold years there are sub-zero minimums. A good frame and good glass save on heating. In old houses, the wall around the opening should be examined before replacing.
- Hot summers
Summers are hot and sunny, with gentle east winds. Frame colour and glass treatment help the home heat up less. On south- and west-facing rooms, external blinds stop the sun.

Climate zone of Braga
Portugal's building energy rules put every place in a winter zone (I1 to I3) and a summer zone (V1 to V3). In Braga the zone depends on the altitude of the building, so we show the ranges.
| Building altitude | Winter zone | Maximum Uw, W/(m²·°C) |
|---|---|---|
| up to 24 m | I1 | 2.80 |
| from 25 to 408 m | I2 | 2.40 |
| above 409 m | I3 | 2.20 |
Summer zone: V2: up to 404 m; V1: above 405 m
Maximum solar factor of windows (gtot,máx): up to 404 m, V2: 0.10 in weak-inertia spaces and 0.56 in medium or strong inertia spaces; above 405 m, V1: 0.15 in weak-inertia spaces and 0.56 in medium or strong inertia spaces. The value is for the opening with the solar protection fully activated. North-facing windows are exempt. What is the solar factor?
The maximum Uw applies to windows in housing in new and renovated buildings (Portaria n.º 138-I/2021), with exceptions, for example conservation works. The zone is calculated with the Manual SCE method, from the region (NUTS III) and the altitude, not by parish. Ask the designer or an SCE expert to confirm the one for your building. Checked on 19 October 2026. What is Uw?

Homes in Braga
The homes in the area change what is worth asking of the windows.
Historic centre
In the centre, around the Cathedral, the Porta Nova arch and the Largo do Paço, there are historic, baroque and 18th-century buildings. There may be facade rules and, in some cases, rules on window materials. Ask the council before deciding and ask the installer to respect the proportions of the opening.
New apartments
The city has a young population and many recently built apartment blocks, with large windows. On busy avenues noise weighs on the choice of glass, and high floors get more of the north winds. Ask for attention to the fixing and the hardware.
Detached and semi-detached houses
On the hills and in the valleys around, such as Gualtar, Lamaçães and the parishes near Sameiro, there are detached homes and stone farmhouses. Driving rain and cold call for good sealing, and valley fog leaves walls damp. In an old house, look at the state of the stone around the opening.

Fog, north winds and the 2009 snow
In Braga there is morning fog in the Cávado valley and, in cold years, snow falls. Wikipedia says the last snowfall in the city was on 9 January 2009. For your home:
- North winds chill north-facing facades.
- Cold glass attracts damp from the valley air.
- On rainy days, air the home anyway, just for a few minutes.
With these swings, double glazing and good sealing serve well in almost every season.
A Roman city with new houses
Braga grew on top of a Roman city, and in many places there are ruins under the ground. This has two consequences for anyone replacing windows:
- In the historic centre, works may have rules and need permits. Ask the council.
- In the new districts, factory windows tend to be large, and avenue noise calls for suitable glass.
The city has, at the same time, centuries of past and a young population. It is worth telling the installer your case, old centre or new district, and which floor you live on.
General notes
Water gets in through worn gaskets or a poor joint to the wall. See how the window drains water and ask to see the joint. A good installer shows both at the end of the job. If possible, check again after a heavy shower.
They do on north-facing facades. Ask for good sealing, good hardware and firm fixing. Double glazing helps cope with the cold the wind brings. On high floors, also ask about wind resistance.
Only in homes very exposed to cold, such as those on the hillsides. For most, double does the job and costs less. Ask for a comparison made for your home. Remember triple is heavier and the frame must cope.
In central Braga, around the Cathedral, facade rules can be tight. The city council can say what is allowed. Ask before requesting quotes, and keep the answer.
Cold glass condenses the damp the home makes. Airing for a few minutes in the morning helps, and glass that insulates keeps the surface warmer. Windows with their own ventilation also reduce the problem.
Yes. Write the parish in the request. It goes to installers who work in your area. If you know the altitude and orientation of the house, say so too.
