About Peniche
Peniche is the westernmost city in continental Europe, according to Wikipedia. It lies in the Leiria district, in the Oeste region, about 90 km from Lisbon. The municipality has about 26,000 inhabitants (2021), four parishes and 77 km², and borders Óbidos to the east and Lourinhã to the south. To the north and west is the Atlantic.
The town stands on a peninsula about ten kilometres round, which was an island until sea and sand joined it to the mainland, a slow process completed in the 15th century. The name comes from Latin and means peninsula. The westernmost point is Cabo Carvoeiro, and to the west, about six miles out, lie the Berlengas, a nature reserve of volcanic origin.
Fishing gave life to the place for centuries, with fishermen who came from Nazaré, Póvoa de Varzim and the Algarve. The fortress, begun in 1557 and finished in 1645, defended the peninsula against pirates and foreign occupation. With less fishing, tourism gained weight, and since 2009 there has been a stage of the world surfing tour at Supertubos beach.
The beaches are long to the north and south of the peninsula. The north beach runs to Foz do Arelho, past Baleal, about three kilometres away. The sea is always near, and so is the wind.
What the climate of Peniche asks of windows
Peniche is Atlantic through and through. The sea wraps around the peninsula on almost every side, so the wind blows nearly always, the air carries salt and damp and the weather changes fast. In summer the sun is strong, but the sea breeze cools it. In winter the air is damp and rain arrives from the Atlantic. Wikipedia notes that the Supertubos waves work whatever the wind direction, which shows how wind arrives from several sides. The window needs good sealing and parts that resist sea air.
Peniche is a peninsula, with the ocean on one side and the other. So wind, salt and damp are never far, and in summer the sun is strong. The Berlengas lie offshore.
None of this ruins a window that is well chosen and well fitted. It only calls for care over a few details.
- Atlantic wind
The wind pushes air and rain against the facade, and on a peninsula it arrives from several sides. If the window does not seal well, you hear whistling and feel the draught. In homes facing the open sea, the fixing to the wall and the sealing gaskets are the first thing to check.
- Sea salt in the air
Salt settles on hardware, frames and glass, and over the years wears whatever is least protected. Ask for parts treated for marine settings and wipe with a damp cloth now and then. Near Baleal and Supertubos, salt and sand are constant.
- Damp
With damp air and cold glass, water forms on the panes and mould in the corners. Low whitewashed homes with old walls feel it more. Airing every day and having windows with ventilation prevents the worst, and a better window keeps the inner pane less cold.
- Sun and summer heat
The sun comes through the glass and heats the room, even with the sea breeze outside. Suitable glass and a well-closed window help keep the home cool. In homes with wide south- or west-facing windows, shutters outside make a big difference.

Climate zone of Peniche
Portugal's building energy rules put every place in a winter zone (I1 to I3) and a summer zone (V1 to V3). In Peniche the zone depends on the altitude of the building, so we show the ranges.
| Building altitude | Winter zone | Maximum Uw, W/(m²·°C) |
|---|---|---|
| up to 160 m | I1 | 2.80 |
| from 161 to 387 m | I2 | 2.40 |
| above 388 m | I3 | 2.20 |
Summer zone: V2 at any altitude.
Maximum solar factor of windows (gtot,máx): V2: 0.10 in weak-inertia spaces and 0.56 in medium or strong inertia spaces. The value is for the opening with the solar protection fully activated. North-facing windows are exempt. What is the solar factor?
The maximum Uw applies to windows in housing in new and renovated buildings (Portaria n.º 138-I/2021), with exceptions, for example conservation works. The zone is calculated with the Manual SCE method, from the region (NUTS III) and the altitude, not by parish. Ask the designer or an SCE expert to confirm the one for your building. Checked on 19 October 2026. What is Uw?

Homes in Peniche
The homes in the area change what is worth asking of the windows.
Traditional houses
The old quarter has low whitewashed houses with worn frames that let in air and damp. Before replacing, look at the wall around: if it is damp, a new window will not fix everything. Ask the installer to check the plaster and sill before proposing the window.
Detached and semi-detached houses
Near the beaches there are houses with wide windows facing the sea, some used only in summer. They need strong hardware, careful sealing and ventilation that works with the home closed. Sliding doors to the terrace are where most salt, sand and water get in.
Historic centre
Next to the fortress and the old core there may be rules for facades. Talk to the town council before changing how a window looks. If it is a block, speak to the residents' association too, which usually decides the window for the whole building.

Beach home empty in winter
Many beach homes stand empty outside summer. With nobody airing them, sea damp stays inside and mould grows on walls and in cupboards.
It helps to:
- leave a ventilation grille open;
- ask someone to open the windows at weekends;
- choose windows with built-in ventilation;
- close the shutters outside, so winter sun does not warm and fog the empty home.
When you return in spring, open everything in the morning and let the air circulate.
Surf, winds from every side and rental homes
Supertubos beach is known around the world, and since 2009 it has hosted a stage of the world surfing tour. According to Wikipedia, the waves are good whatever the wind direction, which shows how in Peniche wind arrives from several sides.
If your home is rented to people who come to surf or sightsee, the window is opened and closed by many people, often with sand on their hands. Ask for robust hardware, easy-to-clean tracks and seals that stand up to wind, and check that the home can be ventilated while empty.
General notes
Yes, with the right choice. PVC does not rust. With aluminium the finish counts, and the hardware must resist salt. Ask the installer for advice and what guarantee they give for marine settings.
Nearly always whistling comes from worn seals or poor fitting, not from the window itself. Good sealing and good installation fix it. Ask the installer to check the gaps around the frame and the shutter box.
Double is enough in many homes. Triple insulates more, but it is heavier and can cost more. In homes very exposed to wind and damp cold, or with a lot of noise, it can pay off.
See the guide Double or triple glazing.
Sea air is damp and cold glass condenses it. Airing every day helps, and better windows keep the glass less cold. Homes left closed for long need ventilation.
See the guide Why is there water on the glass?
Yes. Say in the request if you are in Baleal, Ferrel or another parish; the municipality has four. We do not install: we pass the request on to installers in the area.
Usually you can, but ask the town council whether the facade has rules. Check the state of the plaster and sill, and add ventilation, because low old homes trap damp. The installer helps you decide.
