About Lourinhã
Lourinhã is a town in the Oeste region, in the Lisbon district, in the historical province of Estremadura. The municipality covers 147 km², has eight parishes and 26,246 inhabitants (2021). It borders Peniche and Óbidos to the north, Bombarral and Cadaval to the east and Torres Vedras to the south, and has the Atlantic Ocean to the west, with 12 km of coast.
Wikipedia says that about 80% of the land is used for farming, mainly Rocha pears, vines and potatoes, and that the vines give the Aguardente da Lourinhã, a brandy with a protected designation of origin since 1992. The coast to the north is rocky, with high cliffs, and there are beaches such as Areia Branca, Paimogo and Porto Dinheiro. The Rio Grande, the Rio Galvão and several streams cross the municipality.
The town grew from a Roman settlement. In the 12th century King Afonso Henriques gave these lands to the French knight Jordan, who granted the settlers a charter in 1160. What remains includes the Gothic Church of Santa Maria do Castelo, from the 14th century, and the Convent of Santo António, founded in 1598. Lourinhã is also the “dinosaur capital”: the Lourinhã Formation, from the Late Jurassic, is famous for fossils, which can be seen in the Lourinhã Museum and in the Dino Parque, opened in 2018.
Wikipedia mentions a lot of new building in the town, in São Bartolomeu dos Galegos and in Ribamar. People who live here combine countryside, coast and town, and the windows feel all three.
What the climate of Lourinhã asks of windows
Wikipedia describes an oceanic climate in Lourinhã, because of the Atlantic: an annual average of 16 °C, summers of 24 to 30 °C with cool nights, and in winter sub-zero temperatures are rare (they can reach -4 °C). It also says that the Lourinhã parish is known for rain and that there is flooding in autumn. It is a general summary, with no wind measurements. So we ask the installer to confirm on site, especially near the Rio Grande and by the cliffs.
Lourinhã has 12 km of coast open to the Atlantic, cliffs to the north and, further in, Rocha pear and vine fields.
Wikipedia gives few climate figures. So we speak of what is to be expected: coastal wind, autumn rain, hot summers with cool nights.
- Wind from an open coast
Lourinhã has the ocean to the west and high cliffs, so the wind reaches the most exposed houses with nothing in the way. A badly sealed window whistles and lets cold air in. Ask for a firm fixing to the wall, intact gaskets all round and multi-point locks on the larger sashes.
- Salt and sand by the beaches
Between Paimogo and Porto Dinheiro the air carries salt, and sand gets into the tracks of sliding doors. Salt wears down unprotected hardware. Near the sea, ask for hardware treated for marine use, clean the tracks and rinse the frames with fresh water now and then. Inland, among the fields, this matters much less.
- Autumn rain and damp
Wikipedia speaks of rain and autumn flooding in the Lourinhã parish. With rain driven by the wind, water gets in mostly through the joint between window and wall and through the sill. Ask for a well-sealed joint and a sill with a drip edge. Indoors, airing every day avoids water on the glass and mould in the corners.
- Summers with cool nights
According to Wikipedia, summers run from 24 to 30 °C and nights are cool. A west-facing room heats up in the afternoon, but at the end of the day you can ventilate. Outside blinds and solar-control glass in the sunniest rooms help, and a window that tilts open lets you air safely at night.

| Condition | Level | Climate sheet |
|---|---|---|

In Lourinhã, wind and autumn rain count more than heat. Installation matters as much as the material: the installer confirms everything on site.
Homes in Lourinhã
The homes in the area change what is worth asking of the windows.
Historic centre
In the town there are old monuments, such as the Convent of Santo António and the Church of Santa Maria do Castelo, and old buildings around them. In old buildings the opening may not be regular and the facade may have rules. Ask for careful measuring and speak to the council before changing the outside look.
New apartments
Wikipedia says the town centre has several new apartment blocks going up. In new, well-closed blocks ventilation is often missing, and the damp from the shower and kitchen stays inside. Ask for windows with an airing opening and speak to the residents' association, which usually decides the window for the whole building.
Detached and semi-detached houses
In São Bartolomeu dos Galegos and in Ribamar Wikipedia speaks of urban growth and many new detached houses. A detached house has more walls exposed to the wind than a flat, so the fixing of the window to the wall and the seal all round matter.
Traditional houses
With about 80% of the municipality used for farming, there are many country houses and villages, such as Toledo and Ventosa, in Vimeiro. Old houses tend to have thick walls and tired wooden frames. Before replacing, check the state of the render and the sill, and ask for firm locks because of the wind and dust.
Local notes
The Church of Santa Maria do Castelo is a national monument (1922), so is the Convent of Santo António, and the Paimogo Fort is a Property of Public Interest (1957). Near listed monuments there may be rules for facades; check with the town council before changing the outside look.

Cliffs, beaches and holiday homes
The Lourinhã coast is 12 km long, with high rocky cliffs and beaches such as Areia Branca, Paimogo, Porto das Barcas and Porto Dinheiro. Near Areia Branca Wikipedia mentions shops, a youth hostel and tourist accommodation.
A holiday home stays closed for weeks at a time, and the still air inside breeds mould in the corners. Ask for windows with their own ventilation and hardware treated for a marine setting. Wikipedia does not say how much salt reaches the houses, so ask the installer what they usually use in this area.
Rain and flooding in autumn
Wikipedia says the town grew beside an arm of the sea that is now the small Rio Grande, and that the Lourinhã parish is often hit by flooding in autumn. A window does not stop a flood, but it can stop rainwater from getting in through the opening.
If the house has already had water coming in, look for the cause first: the sill, the joint around the window or a leak in the wall. Only then choose the window. And in low ground floors ask the installer what joint they use under the frame.
Land of dinosaurs, Rocha pears and brandy
The Lourinhã Museum, founded in 1984, holds the largest Iberian collection of Late Jurassic dinosaur fossils, and the Dino Parque opened in 2018 in a pine wood where the municipal dump used to be. Tourism is growing, and Wikipedia says building is an important sector.
If you have a house in the countryside, among pear trees and vines, measure the opening on different days and talk to more than one installer. In guest accommodation, well-sealed double glazing gives more comfort at night. Always ask for measuring on site before the final price.
General notes
Salt and sand attack hardware and tracks. Ask for marine-grade hardware, clean the tracks and wipe the frames with a damp cloth. If the house stays closed outside summer, ask for windows with their own ventilation to avoid mould.
A window does not stop a flood, but heavy rain with wind gets in through the joints. Ask for a sealed joint around the frame and a sill with a drip edge. If water has already come in through the floor or the wall, deal with that cause first.
Near listed monuments there may be rules for facades. Speak to the town council before changing how the outside looks. Bring photos and say whether you want to keep the lines of the old window, so the installer can suggest something close.
In the countryside the house stands alone in the wind. Ask for a strong fixing to the wall, double glazing with a good seal and outside blinds or shutters. In village houses with thick walls the opening is deep, so measure the depth too.
Ask about the type of glass and the ventilation of the windows, because new homes are very closed. In Ribamar, nearer the coast, also ask about hardware against salt. Keep the data sheets for the warranty.
Yes. Write your locality in the request and we pass your contact to installers in that area. JanelaCerta does not do the work: it puts the person asking in touch with the person who installs. Say whether the house is on the coast or inland, because wind and salt change a lot.
