About Torres Vedras

Torres Vedras lies in the West, in the historical province of Estremadura, but belongs to the Lisbon district, about 50 km north of the capital. The municipality covers 407 km², has 15 parishes and about 83,000 inhabitants (2021). It borders Lourinhã, Cadaval, Alenquer, Sobral de Monte Agraço and Mafra, and to the west has the Atlantic Ocean.

The population is very scattered. According to Wikipedia, there are 21 urban clusters, most with fewer than 200 inhabitants, and only about a quarter of the people in the municipality live in the town, in the two biggest urban parishes. The others live in towns, villages and farms, near vine and fruit fields, or by the coast, which is very popular in summer.

The town was taken from the Moors by King Afonso I in 1148, and King Afonso III gave it a charter in 1250. Princess Leonor was born here in 1434. In 1808, nearby, Anglo-Portuguese troops beat the French at the battles of Roliça and Vimeiro, and in 1809 and 1810 Wellington had the Lines of Torres Vedras built, which protected Lisbon. The São Vicente Fort tells that story.

Today the municipality lives from trade, industry, farming and construction. Vines and fruit have a lot of weight, and Torres Vedras and Alenquer were European City of Wine in 2018. Carnival is the big festival, known as “the most Portuguese in Portugal”. For anyone choosing windows, the municipality is three places in one: the town among hills, the villages and farms in the countryside and the coast on the Atlantic.

What the climate of Torres Vedras asks of windows

English-language Wikipedia describes Torres Vedras as having a Mediterranean climate, with mild, rainy winters and hot, dry summers. Portuguese Wikipedia gives no climate figures, so we give none here. The municipality has an Atlantic coast, and the town sits among gentle hills, so wind and sea humidity are felt more near the beach than in the inland valleys.

Torres Vedras sits among gentle hills and valleys, a few kilometres from the Atlantic. The sea influences wind and humidity, even inside the municipality.

Winters are mild and rainy, summers hot and dry. A house in the countryside and a flat in town feel this in different ways.

Section notes Sample text · to be reviewed
  1. Atlantic wind

The municipality's coast is open to the ocean, and the wind reaches the valleys. On gently rolling ground, higher houses and those near the beach take it head on. A good seal all round and a firm lock avoid whistling and air getting in.

  2. Salt near the beaches

In town salt matters little. In parishes by the coast, such as Santa Cruz, salty air attacks hardware and metals over time. There it pays to choose hardware and finishes for a salty setting and wash the window with fresh water now and then.

  3. Winter rain and damp

Winters are mild but rainy. Water rarely gets in through the glass: it almost always passes through the joint between window and wall, or through blocked drainage slots. Humid air leaves droplets on the glass and mould in the corners of houses that are not aired.

  4. Hot, dry summers

Summers are hot and dry, with lots of sun. On south and west facades, solar-control glass and outside blinds keep the house cooler. Near the sea, the breeze eases the nights, and ventilating at the end of the day pays off.

Wind and salt arrive from the sea against the window. Indoors, damp air rises. The summer sun comes through the glass and warms the room.abcd

Climate zone of Torres Vedras

Portugal's building energy rules put every place in a winter zone (I1 to I3) and a summer zone (V1 to V3). In Torres Vedras the zone depends on the altitude of the building, so we show the ranges.

Winter zone by altitude in Torres Vedras and the maximum Uw of windows
Building altitudeWinter zoneMaximum Uw, W/(m²·°C)
up to 160 mI12.80
from 161 to 387 mI22.40
above 388 mI32.20

Summer zone: V2 at any altitude.

Maximum solar factor of windows (gtot,máx): V2: 0.10 in weak-inertia spaces and 0.56 in medium or strong inertia spaces. The value is for the opening with the solar protection fully activated. North-facing windows are exempt. What is the solar factor?

The maximum Uw applies to windows in housing in new and renovated buildings (Portaria n.º 138-I/2021), with exceptions, for example conservation works. The zone is calculated with the Manual SCE method, from the region (NUTS III) and the altitude, not by parish. Ask the designer or an SCE expert to confirm the one for your building. Checked on 19 October 2026. What is Uw?

Homes in Torres Vedras

The homes in the area change what is worth asking of the windows.

  • Traditional houses

In the villages and farms of the municipality, tied to vines and fruit, there are old houses with thick walls and small windows, which lose heat in winter and let in dust and air. When replacing, look at the state of the wood and render around the opening, not just the window.

  • Detached and semi-detached houses

With the population so scattered, there are many houses, some isolated in the countryside. They have more walls exposed to wind than a block and more windows to replace. It is worth planning the work facade by facade and starting with the most exposed, usually the one facing west.

  • New apartments

In town, in more recent blocks, ventilation is often missing: well-sealed windows without airing leave droplets and mould, especially in kitchens and bathrooms. Ask for windows with an airing opening and check whether there are grilles in the walls.

A town among hills, the coast a few kilometres away

The town lies among gentle hills and valleys, and the municipality’s coast is very popular in summer, according to Wikipedia. In a home in town salt matters little. In a home by the beaches, as in Santa Cruz, wind and salt count more.

Say in the request where the home is and whether it is lived in all year. A beach house that stays closed from September to June has different damp problems from a home lived in every day, and the choice of windows, hardware and ventilation changes with that.

A house in the countryside, among vines and orchards

The municipality has a strong farming presence, mainly vines and fruit. In a house in the countryside, the windows take more wind and soil dust, and exposed walls lose more heat in winter.

Ask the installer how the joint will work with old stone or rendered walls, because in farmhouses the openings are rarely straight. Ask for measuring at several points and a quote that explains the joint, the drainage and the hardware. A good joint is worth as much as the window.

General notes

With walls exposed to wind and dust, the seal and ease of cleaning count. PVC needs no painting and wipes clean with a damp cloth. Ask the installer to look at the joint and the drainage slots, because that is where winter water usually gets in.
