About Torres Novas
Torres Novas is a town in the Santarém district, in the old province of Ribatejo, in the Middle Tagus sub-region. The municipality covers 270 km², has 10 parishes and 34,149 inhabitants (2021), of whom about 13,600 live in the town. It borders Ourém, Tomar, Vila Nova da Barquinha, Entroncamento, Golegã, Santarém and Alcanena.
The castle and the old part grew partly encircled by the Almonda river, which served as a natural defence, and the ground is mostly alluvium and limestone. The Serra de Aire can be seen in the distance, and Wikipedia lists the Serras de Aire e Candeeiros Natural Park among the natural heritage of the municipality. The castle was taken from the Moors by Afonso Henriques in 1148, the town received its charter in 1190 and, in 1755, the Lisbon earthquake brought down four of its towers.
It is a very old place. A 400,000-year-old Homo heidelbergensis skull was found in the Aroeira cave, the oldest human trace in Portugal, and there are the ruins of the Roman villa of Cardílio. The Almonda paper mill dates from 1818 and the spinning company from 1845. Torres Novas has been a city since 1985.
What the climate of Torres Novas asks of windows
Portuguese Wikipedia has no climate data for Torres Novas. The English version describes winters with low temperatures and drier, hotter summers, because of the Aire and Candeeiros mountains, and gives 600 to 800 mm of rain a year and 2,400 to 2,700 hours of sun. These are general figures with no source given, and they do not measure your street. We ask the installer to confirm on site, especially by the Almonda.
Torres Novas sits between the Almonda river and the Serra de Aire, on alluvium and limestone.
Portuguese Wikipedia gives no climate figures. We speak of what is to be expected: damp by the river, hot, dry summers and cold winters.
- By the Almonda
The river partly surrounds the old town and runs through the Jardim das Rosas. In the streets by the water the air can be damper, especially in the morning. Ask for profiles that neither rot nor rust and hardware that is easy to clean, and dry the frame if water shows at the bottom.
- Dry, hot summer
Near the Serra de Aire the air is drier and summer temperatures climb, according to English Wikipedia. Outside blinds and light colours do a lot. In rooms facing west, solar-control glass can help, but ask the installer to look at the facade first.
- Cold winter, old walls
Winter brings low temperatures. In old, thick walls, the glass and the frame are among the coldest points of the room, and that is where droplets appear. A frame with a thermal break and a continuous seal reduce the problem; airing a few minutes a day does the rest.
- Old openings, facades with history
Near the castle and the old churches, openings may be tall and not always alike, and the facade may have rules. Ask for opening-by-opening measuring and bring photos, so the installer can propose a design close to the old window.

Homes in Torres Novas
The homes in the area change what is worth asking of the windows.
Historic centre
Around the castle and the old churches, such as Salvador and Misericórdia, there are old streets and multi-storey houses. Torres Novas Castle is a National Monument, so changing the facade near it deserves a talk with the council. Ask for careful measuring, because old openings are rarely all the same.
Traditional houses
In the villages of the municipality, such as Argea, known for its pottery, expect old farm houses with thick walls. They lose heat in winter and heat up in summer. Before changing the window, check the render around the opening and whether the wall has damp stains.
New apartments
Between the centre and the A23 motorway, shops and services have grown, and newer building is to be expected there. New, well-closed homes often lack ventilation. Ask for windows with an airing opening and use it every day.
Local notes
Torres Novas Castle has been a National Monument since 1910, according to English Wikipedia. Near listed buildings there may be rules for facades; check with the town council before changing the outside look.

The Almonda and the old town
The Almonda river partly surrounded the castle and the old town. In the Jardim das Rosas, near the Açude-Real, the river runs along its old bed, from before the 16th-century weir. Anyone living near the water should expect more damp in the air of the low streets.
Before blaming the window, check whether the damp comes from the wall, the floor or a leak. A new window keeps the glass warmer and cuts the droplets, but it does not cure a wet wall.
A town of paper and spinning
The Almonda paper mill dates from 1818 and the Torres Novas spinning company from 1845. English Wikipedia says that Renova, a paper company, has its seat in the municipality.
If your home or warehouse is an old industrial building, adapted for use, the openings may be large and tall. Ask for careful measuring and ask about the weight of the glass and the hardware, because large windows need stronger hinges and frames.
General notes
Often not. Water can rise from the floor, get in through a wall or come from a pipe. First find where it comes from. If it is only steam from cooking and showers, a well-sealed window helps, as long as airing the house stays part of the day.
Torres Novas Castle is a National Monument. Near listed buildings there may be rules for the facade. Ask the town council before ordering and bring photos of the house. Tell the installer if you want to keep the colour and lines of the old window.
English Wikipedia describes drier, hotter summers because of the Aire and Candeeiros mountains, without monthly figures. For rooms with afternoon sun, outside blinds and solar-control glass help more than a dearer frame.
Old farm houses have thick walls, small openings and often damp in the corners. Before changing, check the render and the wood around. Choose a window that closes well and has an airing opening, so the air renews without opening the whole window.
For the moderate cold of the Middle Tagus, double glazing with a good seal is enough for many homes. Triple is heavier and is worth it mainly on cold walls, north-facing rooms or very exposed houses. Ask the installer to compare the two options for your home.
Yes. Write the parish or village in the request and we pass it on to installers in the area. We do not install: we connect the person asking with the person who does the work. Say whether the house is old and whether it is near a river or the mountains.
