About Viana do Castelo
Viana do Castelo is in the Alto Minho, where the Lima river meets the Atlantic. The municipality has about 86 thousand residents in 319 km² and 27 parishes, and climbs to the Serra de Arga, 825 metres at Alto do Espinheiro. It borders Caminha, Ponte de Lima, Barcelos and Esposende, and has the ocean to the west.
Human settlement is very old, since the Mesolithic, on Santa Luzia hill. The settlement received its charter from King Afonso III in 1258 and lived off trade by sea: it exported wine, fruit and salt and imported cloth and glass. A tower, the Roqueta, guarded the port from pirates. It was made a city in 1848 and, in the 20th century, was one of the main cod ports.
The historic centre forms a circle around the remains of the old walls, with alleys and larger streets facing the Lima river. There stand the old main church, now a cathedral, the 16th-century Misericórdia chapel and the Praça da República, with its granite fountain of 1559. Outside the centre, on Santa Luzia hill, is the Sacred Heart sanctuary.
Viana has shipyards, forestry and metal industry, and has been a diocese seat since 1977. It is part of the Cittaslow network and the Portuguese Healthy Cities Network.
What the climate of Viana do Castelo asks of windows
According to Wikipedia, Viana do Castelo has a Csb climate with strong ocean influence: hot, relatively dry summers and mild, rainy winters. It is one of the rainiest cities in mainland Portugal. Wind comes up through the Lima mouth and rain arrives from the Atlantic almost all year, though summer brings sunny days. A window should seal well against rain, wind and salt, and the joint to the wall is the most important point.
Viana has the sea ahead, the river alongside and the hills behind. Rain comes in from the Atlantic and wind runs through the Lima mouth.
For a window to cope with all this, the seal, the fixing and the finish count. The rest follows.
- Wind from the Lima mouth
The river-mouth area is known for wind sports, and that says it all. A well-fixed, well-sealed window holds back air and sideways rain. On the beaches and at Cabedelo, homes catch the wind with no shelter.
- Salt air
Salt comes off the sea and stays on metal, and by the port and shipyards the air is salty all year. Hardware and finishes for marine settings and a rinse with fresh water are worth it. Poorly finished aluminium wears fast.
- Rain and damp
Viana is one of the rainiest cities on the mainland, and the centre, between walls and river, holds damp. The joint between window and wall must be perfect, and the home should be aired. Windows with their own ventilation help dry things out.
- Summer sun
Summers are hot and relatively dry, and the sun is strong on south- and west-facing facades. Light colours and solar-treated glass help. External blinds stop the heat before it reaches the glass.
| Condition | Level | Climate sheet |
|---|---|---|
| Rain | High | One of the rainiest cities on the mainland. |
| Wind | High | Especially by the river mouth and the coast. |
| Humidity | High | Sea, river and hills together. |
| Winter | Medium | Mild and rainy. |
| Summer | Medium | Hot but relatively dry. |

Climate zone of Viana do Castelo
Portugal's building energy rules put every place in a winter zone (I1 to I3) and a summer zone (V1 to V3). In Viana do Castelo the zone depends on the altitude of the building, so we show the ranges.
| Building altitude | Winter zone | Maximum Uw, W/(m²·°C) |
|---|---|---|
| up to 48 m | I1 | 2.80 |
| from 49 to 382 m | I2 | 2.40 |
| above 383 m | I3 | 2.20 |
Summer zone: V2: up to 392 m; V1: above 393 m
Maximum solar factor of windows (gtot,máx): up to 392 m, V2: 0.10 in weak-inertia spaces and 0.56 in medium or strong inertia spaces; above 393 m, V1: 0.15 in weak-inertia spaces and 0.56 in medium or strong inertia spaces. The value is for the opening with the solar protection fully activated. North-facing windows are exempt. What is the solar factor?
The maximum Uw applies to windows in housing in new and renovated buildings (Portaria n.º 138-I/2021), with exceptions, for example conservation works. The zone is calculated with the Manual SCE method, from the region (NUTS III) and the altitude, not by parish. Ask the designer or an SCE expert to confirm the one for your building. Checked on 19 October 2026. What is Uw?

Homes in Viana do Castelo
The homes in the area change what is worth asking of the windows.
Historic centre
In the historic centre, inside the circle of the old walls, there are Renaissance, Manueline, Baroque and Art Deco buildings. There may be rules for facades: ask the city council. In narrow, shaded streets, damp and little light weigh, and the opening should be well assessed before replacing.
Traditional houses
In the villages of the Serra de Arga and the Lima valley there are stone houses and farmhouses, with small windows and thick walls. With heavy rain and cold, old windows let in water and air. When replacing, check the state of the plaster and keep the facade design.
New apartments
By the river and the coast there are apartment blocks with views. Upper floors get more wind and sideways rain, especially near the river mouth. Ask for strong hardware and careful fixing, and check the building rules for the facade.

Sea, river and hills in one municipality
Viana has three settings: the Atlantic coast, the Lima mouth and the Serra de Arga. The same window does not suit all of them equally:
- On the coast: wind, salt air and sideways rain.
- By the river: damp air all year.
- In the hills: stronger cold and rain on higher ground.
Tell the installer which part of the municipality you live in.
A city of shipyards and cod
Viana lived off the sea for centuries: from the salt and wine trade, the cod port of the 20th century and, today, shipyards. That left districts by the river with seafarers’ houses, warehouses and port buildings:
- Near the river and the port, damp air and salt punish frames and hardware.
- In warehouses converted to homes or offices, large windows need insulation.
- On streets next to the old walls, the facade may have rules.
Tell the installer what kind of building it is, and whether it is near the river.
General notes
What matters most is the joint between window and wall and the water exit in the frame. Ask the installer to explain how the window drains rain. At the end of the job, look at both points, preferably after a downpour.
It can, if the finish is weak. Aluminium with a good coating and regular washing lasts well; PVC does not rust. Compare both materials. Hardware is often the weakest point, so it is worth asking about.
They do, if the fixing is firm and the hardware is strong. On high floors even more care is wise. Ask for a seal test at the end of the job. In isolated houses near the beach, the wind is stronger still.
Inside the circle of the old walls there may be rules about the facade. Talk to the city council before asking for quotes and tell the installer what it says. On narrow streets, light also weighs in choosing glass.
Large, well-insulated, well-sealed windows, because these buildings are cold and damp. The installer should look at the state of the structure and the opening. In a port setting, ask for a marine finish.
Yes. Write the parish in the request. It goes to installers who cover that area. If you know the altitude and orientation of the house, say so too.
