About Vendas Novas
Vendas Novas is a town in the Évora district, in the Alentejo Central. The municipality covers 222 km², has two parishes (Vendas Novas and Landeira) and 11,260 inhabitants (2021), of whom 9,246 live in the town. It borders Montemor-o-Novo to the east, Alcácer do Sal to the south, Palmela to the west and Montijo to the northwest. The council counts seven settlements (Vendas Novas, Landeira, Bombel, Afeiteira, Piçarras, Nicolaus and Marconi) and two main streams, the Canha to the north and the Marateca to the south.
The place was born of a road. By order of King John III a track was opened from Aldeia Galega (today Montijo) to Montemor-o-Novo, and inns were built beside it, the “new inns” (vendas novas) that gave the place its name. In the reign of King John V a royal palace was built here, the Palácio das Passagens, for the king to spend the night on the journey to the border. The council says two thousand workers worked on the palace and the roads, and that the palace was built in about a year.
The railway arrived around 1860, the year the land was also leased for the Artillery Practice School, which today has a museum in the town. In 1921 a cork factory opened. In 1950, according to the council, the town still had no running water in homes, no electricity network and no sewers. Vendas Novas only became a municipality in 1962, having been a parish of Montemor-o-Novo, and was raised to city status in 1993.
Today it is about 25 minutes by train from Évora and close to 1 hour from Lisbon, according to Wikipedia, and the council speaks of an industrial park and a regional hub for the car industry, cork and logistics. People who live here have the countryside around them, and the Alentejo summer is what weighs most on windows.
What the climate of Vendas Novas asks of windows
The Vendas Novas council describes a climate with Mediterranean and continental traits, dry and hot. It says average summer temperatures are between 21 and 25 °C, but can pass 35 °C. We did not find figures for rain, wind or winter cold in a source we have read, so we give none. The installer confirms on site, especially in west-facing homes.
Vendas Novas lies in the Alentejo Central, between two streams, the Canha and the Marateca, with fields around.
The council describes a dry, hot climate, with Mediterranean and continental traits. So we speak mostly of summer heat.
- Dry summer heat
The council describes a dry, hot climate, with summer averages between 21 and 25 °C and days that can pass 35 °C. In that heat, the sun coming through the glass warms the room. Outside blinds, light-coloured frames and solar-control glass on sunny facades do more than switching on the air conditioning.
- Dust and scrub nearby
The council website has pages on rural fire prevention and forest protection, so there is scrub and forest nearby. On dry, windy days dust gets in through the tracks and gaps. Ask for a continuous seal and tracks that are easy to clean; on smoky days, tightly shut windows keep the indoor air cleaner.
- Winter still to confirm
We found no winter figures in a source we have read. The council speaks of continental traits, and colder nights than on the coast are to be expected. So it makes sense to ask for double glazing and an insulating frame, so the inside glass does not get icy, and to air the rooms a few minutes a day.
- Ventilating at the end of the day
With heat by day, many people close blinds and windows. Opening in the late afternoon and at night lets out the heat stored in the house. Tilt-and-turn windows let you air without opening fully, which is safer, and ventilation grilles help in very closed homes.

Homes in Vendas Novas
The homes in the area change what is worth asking of the windows.
Historic centre
Wikipedia lists as heritage, among others, the Parish Church, the Royal Fountain, the Palácio das Passagens and the Palácio do Vidigal. Near historic buildings there may be facade rules, and old openings may be deep and irregular. Speak to the council before changing the outside look and ask for careful measuring.
Traditional houses
The council says that in 1845 the place still looked like a village and that in 1950 there was no running water in homes and no sewers. Houses from that time tend to have uninsulated walls and wooden frames, and they get very hot inside in summer. When replacing, check the state of the render and sill and ask for outside blinds.
Detached and semi-detached houses
Outside the town there are settlements such as Landeira, Piçarras, Afeiteira and Bombel. In a municipality of 222 km² with 52 inhabitants per km², according to the council, expect many isolated houses or village houses surrounded by fields. Houses like that catch sun from every side: ask for outside blinds, solar-control glass on sunny facades and a careful seal.

From inn to city
The name Vendas Novas comes from the inns built beside the new road. The council says the contract for the Royal Inn dates from 1610 and that Queen Catherine of Braganza slept there in 1691. The oldest settlement in the municipality is Landeira, with references from the early 12th century.
English Wikipedia adds that in the mid 19th century workers on the Vendas Novas to Beja railway found prehistoric objects that have been in the British Museum since 1862. For anyone changing windows the point is simple: Vendas Novas has homes of many ages, and each one needs its own measuring.
Between roads, railway and factories
Wikipedia says the National Road 4 is the main axis that crosses the town, that the railway station has daily links to Lisbon and Évora, and that the access to the A6 motorway is east of the town. The council speaks of an industrial and business park.
Beside a busy road, double glazing and a well-sealed frame help lower the noise that gets in. We have no noise measurements for Vendas Novas, so we ask the installer to say frankly what to expect on your street and not to promise figures.
Villages around the town
Landeira is a parish and Wikipedia says it is the oldest settlement in the municipality. Near it is the Marateca junction, where the A6, A2 and A13 meet. Piçarras, Afeiteira and Bombel have a church or chapels, and Landeira and Piçarras have ethnographic spaces, according to the same source.
People in the villages often have a bigger house, with a yard and windows on several sides. Ask for all the windows to be measured on the same visit, because the afternoon sun weighs on some facades and not on others.
General notes
Light-coloured PVC with double glazing and, on sunny facades, solar-control glass. What makes the most difference is outside blinds. Ask the installer to look at which walls get the afternoon sun before proposing the glass.
Wikipedia says the N4 crosses the town. Double glazing and a well-sealed frame help against noise, but the effect depends on the house and we have no measurements for each street. Ask the installer to explain what to expect on your facade, without promising figures.
Isolated houses catch sun and dust from every side. Ask for outside blinds, firm locks and profiles that are easy to clean. If the house is closed part of the year, ask for windows with their own ventilation to avoid mould.
Near historic buildings there may be facade rules. Speak to the town council before changing how the outside looks, bring photos and say whether you want to keep the lines of the old window. In a block, the residents' association usually decides.
Yes, on cold days, if the air in the house is humid from cooking or showers and the glass is cold. Airing a few minutes a day and an insulating frame reduce the problem. A dry climate does not rule out water on the glass.
Yes. Write your locality in the request and we pass your contact to installers in that area. JanelaCerta does not do the work: it puts the person asking in touch with the person who installs. Say whether the house is in town or in the countryside, because sun and dust change a lot.
