About Tondela

Tondela is the seat of a municipality in the Viseu district, in the Beira Alta, in the Viseu Dão-Lafões sub-region. The municipality covers 371.22 km² and had 25,910 inhabitants (2021 census), against 40,596 in 1950, the highest on record. Wikipedia gives 19 parishes in one part of the page and 22 in another, so we do not state the number. It borders Vouzela, Oliveira de Frades, Viseu, Carregal do Sal, Santa Comba Dão, Mortágua and Águeda.

The Serra do Caramulo is described as the crown jewel of the municipality, with a harsh climate, and there is also the Vale de Besteiros plateau. The Dão river crosses the territory, and the Dinha, which rises in the serra, runs 35 km before joining the Dão. The municipality brings together the parishes of the old Besteiros municipality, which existed until 1836, and its charter dates from 1515. Wikipedia also mentions large forest areas, river beaches and the thermal waters of Sangemil.

Local products include honey, chestnuts, maize, the oranges of Besteiros, the black pottery of Molelos and the wines of the Dão demarcated region. Caramulo, which Wikipedia says began in 1921 as a sanatorium resort, has the Caramulo Museum (art and cars) and the Caramulo Motorfestival, on the first weekend of September.

What the climate of Tondela asks of windows

Wikipedia has no climate data for Tondela. It says only that the Serra do Caramulo has a harsh climate. The municipality joins serra, plateau and river valleys, so the houses up high and those down low do not live in the same conditions: more cold and more wind-driven rain are to be expected in the serra than in the lowlands. We give no figures because we do not have them from a reliable source. We ask the installer to confirm on site, house by house.

Tondela joins the Serra do Caramulo, the Besteiros plateau and the Dão river valley. The houses up high and those down low live in different climates.

Wikipedia only says the serra has a harsh climate, with no figures. So we speak of what is to be expected, and the installer confirms on site.

  1. Mountain rain and mist

The Serra do Caramulo is described as harsh. In high houses, wind-driven rain is to be expected, wetting the facade and the joints. A continuous seal round the frame and a sill with a good slope keep the water away from the wall.

  2. Stone that holds the cold

In granite houses the thick wall stays cold in winter. With the new window, the cold spot becomes the stone next to the opening, where mould can appear. Ask for a well-insulated inside joint and a frame that leaves no cold bridges at the reveal.

  3. Valley and plateau

Between the serra and the Dão river there are plateau and valleys where the air stays stiller and damper in the morning. In low houses, opening the window for a few minutes or having trickle vents helps dry the air from the kitchen and shower, which a new window no longer airs by itself.

  4. Late-afternoon sun

We have no figures for heat. On west-facing facades the late-afternoon sun warms the room; outside blinds or solar-control glass are enough, without giving up winter insulation, which counts more in the serra.

Wind and salt arrive from the water against the window. Indoors, damp air rises. The summer sun comes through the glass and warms the room.abcd

Homes in Tondela

The homes in the area change what is worth asking of the windows.

  • Traditional houses

In the mountain villages there are clusters of granite houses, according to Wikipedia. The stone is thick and holds the cold, and the openings are often small. Before replacing a window, check the state of the stone and render around the opening and ask for a well-insulated joint.

  • Historic centre

In the town and the older parishes there are manor houses, almost all from the 18th century, with stone frames round the openings. If your house has a facade like that, ask the council before changing the design of the windows and bring photos to the installer.

The serra and Caramulo

Caramulo began in 1921 as a sanatorium resort, created by Jerónimo de Lacerda to treat tuberculosis patients. Some of the old sanatoriums were closed and others reused, one of them as a hotel. Today the village has the Caramulo Museum and, in early September, the Motorfestival.

People with a house in the serra live with mountain air and are more exposed to rain and wind than in the valley. Before choosing windows, look at which way the facade faces and at the joint round the frame. The installer can say whether a better-insulating glass is worth it.

Manor houses, granite and black pottery

Wikipedia speaks of manor houses, almost all from the 18th century, and of mountain villages with granite houses built tight against each other. In Molelos they make black pottery, a local craft. In buildings like these, the openings have stone frames and proportions of their own.

Ask for a window that fits the opening without covering the frame. Have it measured with care, because stone is rarely straight, and bring photos of the facade to the installer.

General notes

Wikipedia describes the serra as harsh, but gives no figures. In high houses more cold and more wind-driven rain are to be expected, so the seal and the joint weigh more. Ask the installer to see the house before proposing double or triple glazing.
