About Sesimbra
Sesimbra lies at the foot of the Arrábida hills, facing the Atlantic, near the mouth of the Sado. The municipality covers 195 km² and has 52,394 inhabitants (2021), and three parishes: Castelo, Santiago and Quinta do Conde. It borders Almada, Seixal, Barreiro and Setúbal, and has ocean coast to the south and west.
The town is a fishing harbour with a beach in the middle. The castle, high up, was taken from the Moors in 1165 by Afonso Henriques, and the 17th-century Santiago fort stands by the beach with a museum on fishing life. In the Age of Discoveries it was an important port, and in the 18th century kings came here for seaside stays.
The landscape of the municipality includes Cabo Espichel, with its sanctuary, the Albufeira lagoon and Meco beach. Between the end of the 19th century and the early 20th, Sesimbra had a large canning industry. Today it lives from fishing, tourism, beaches, fish restaurants and diving.
Quinta do Conde, further north, has more people than the town of Sesimbra itself. The Senhor Jesus das Chagas festivities on 4 May and Fisherman’s Day on 31 May mark the calendar. Between harbour, hills and capes, a window in Sesimbra lives on salt, wind and coastal sun.
What the climate of Sesimbra asks of windows
Wikipedia has no climate section for Sesimbra. The town faces the Atlantic, with the hills behind, so the climate of the Setúbal peninsula region applies: Mediterranean, with a hot summer cooled by the sea and a mild winter. Sea wind and salt are always present, and on the capes, such as Espichel, the wind is even stronger. The hills help shelter part of the town from inland winds.
Sesimbra faces the Atlantic, with the Arrábida hills behind. The sea cools summer and winter is mild.
Headland wind and harbour salt are what test a window most here. The drawing shows a house by the harbour.
- Sea and headland wind
The coast is open to the Atlantic, to the south and west. At Cabo Espichel and Meco the wind is even stronger, and detached homes catch it head-on. On windy days, badly sealed windows whistle and let in fine sand and cold air. Latches at several points and rubber seals in good condition make the difference.
- Salt from harbour to beach
By the harbour, the Santiago fort and the beach there is salt all year, and fishermen's houses take it every day. Salt attacks aluminium with a poor finish and weak hardware. Near the water, choose tough parts and rinse the window with fresh water regularly.
- Sea damp
On foggy days and cool nights, sea air leaves the glass wet, especially in the morning. In homes that are not aired enough, damp stays in the walls. A window that insulates well helps, but the home needs airing every day. Near the water, the air is never fully dry.
- Summer sun with a breeze
The sun is strong, but the sea breeze cools, and many people open their windows at the end of the afternoon. South- and west-facing rooms still heat up, especially in high houses, such as those on the castle hillside. Outside blinds and glass with some solar coating keep the home cool without shutting out the air.

| Condition | Level | Climate sheet |
|---|---|---|
| Summer | Medium | Hot, but the sea cools things down. |
| Winter | Medium | Mild. |
| Rain | Medium | More in autumn and winter. |
| Wind | High | From the sea, stronger on the capes. |
| Humidity | Medium | Sea air, mostly in the morning. |
| Sun | High | Plenty of summer sun. |

Climate zone of Sesimbra
Portugal's building energy rules put every place in a winter zone (I1 to I3) and a summer zone (V1 to V3). In Sesimbra the zone depends on the altitude of the building, so we show the ranges.
| Building altitude | Winter zone | Maximum Uw, W/(m²·°C) |
|---|---|---|
| up to 217 m | I1 | 2.80 |
| from 218 to 550 m | I2 | 2.40 |
| above 551 m | I3 | 2.20 |
Summer zone: V3: up to 206 m; V2: from 207 to 606 m; V1: above 607 m
Maximum solar factor of windows (gtot,máx): up to 206 m, V3: 0.10 in weak-inertia spaces and 0.50 in medium or strong inertia spaces; from 207 to 606 m, V2: 0.10 in weak-inertia spaces and 0.56 in medium or strong inertia spaces; above 607 m, V1: 0.15 in weak-inertia spaces and 0.56 in medium or strong inertia spaces. The value is for the opening with the solar protection fully activated. North-facing windows are exempt. What is the solar factor?
The maximum Uw applies to windows in housing in new and renovated buildings (Portaria n.º 138-I/2021), with exceptions, for example conservation works. The zone is calculated with the Manual SCE method, from the region (NUTS III) and the altitude, not by parish. Ask the designer or an SCE expert to confirm the one for your building. Checked on 19 October 2026. What is Uw?

Homes in Sesimbra
The homes in the area change what is worth asking of the windows.
Historic centre
The centre, by the beach and the harbour, has low houses close together, built by seafaring people, and narrow streets. Old windows and worn edges are common, and the historic centre may have rules. Ask Sesimbra town council before changing the facade.
Detached and semi-detached houses
Towards Quinta do Conde, Meco and the Albufeira lagoon there are houses on open ground. Wind and salt arrive unobstructed, and large openings catch the sun. Ask for solid latches and a seal all round.
New apartments
In the newer parts of the town and Quinta do Conde there may be apartment blocks. The windows are newer, but sea spray and sea damp still count on floors facing the sea.

Fishermen's houses by the harbour
On the streets by the harbour, salt reaches the window every day and the air is heavy with damp. Hardware should resist corrosion, and rinsing the window with fresh water is worth it. In old fishermen’s houses, walls are irregular and the edge finish is the most delicate part. Ask the installer to measure on site and to explain how the edge finish will be done. Also ask whether the quote includes the shutter box. People who live near the harbour may also want glass that cuts the noise of boats and people in the streets better.
Castle, hillside and wind
On the castle hillside, homes sit above the town and catch the sea wind and the view. Higher means more wind and more sun. People living there should ask for latches at several points and seals in good condition, and think about sun protection on the west side. Near monuments such as the castle and the church of Nossa Senhora do Castelo there may be facade rules, so talk to the council first. On steep hillsides, delivering and carrying up the windows can be harder; tell the installer what access is like.
General notes
Over time, salt attacks metals. PVC does not rust, but the hardware is metal. With aluminium, choose a good finish and rinse with fresh water. Near the harbour, this cleaning should be regular.
It is almost always a gap in the seal or the installation. A well-sealed window ends the whistle. Ask the installer to check the rubber seals and the latch. If the wind brings sand, clean the tracks too.
Usually yes, but the historic centre may have rules. Ask Sesimbra town council. If the house is in a development, talk to the administration too. The installer should measure the openings on site.
It helps, if it insulates well. Airing in the morning is still needed to avoid mould. Near the water, the air is never fully dry, so daily ventilation is the basis. Also check the shutter box and the wall.
Winter is mild, so double glazing usually does the job. Triple is heavier and may strain the hardware in homes with a lot of wind. It makes sense in a detached, cold house. Ask the installer for an opinion.
Yes. The parish has more people than the town of Sesimbra. Write your street or area in the request, and say whether the house is near the sea or further inland. JanelaCerta does not install windows.
