About Rio Maior
Rio Maior is a town in the Santarém district, in the province of Ribatejo. The municipality covers 272.76 km², has 10 parishes and 21,005 inhabitants (2021). It borders Porto de Mós, Santarém, Azambuja, Cadaval, Caldas da Rainha and Alcobaça. Since 2023 it has belonged to the Oeste e Vale do Tejo region and the Lezíria do Tejo sub-region.
3 km from the town are the Fonte da Bica salt pans, with salt water that comes out of the ground and not from the sea. A document of 1177 already speaks of “salt pans and Rio Mayor”. A tourism site explains that rain passes through the limestone of the mountains and picks up salt from a layer of rock salt below, and that the salt pans are about 20 miles from the sea.
Rio Maior calls itself the city of Sport, with an award-winning sports complex, an Olympic pool and a training centre. The yearly fair, now the Onion Fair, has existed since 1761. The municipality had a lignite mine at Espadanal, registered in 1916 and closed in 1969, and a briquette factory from 1955; in 1945 the railway that carried the coal to Vale de Santarém opened. The municipality was created in 1836 and Rio Maior has been a city since 1985.
What the climate of Rio Maior asks of windows
Portuguese Wikipedia has no climate data for Rio Maior. The English version describes a Mediterranean climate, with warm to very hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters, and mentions extremes of 44.9 °C (4 August 2018) and −6.2 °C (in January and February). That is a big gap between heat and cold. These are figures from a general source and do not measure your street; we ask the installer to confirm on site.
Rio Maior lies between mountains and farmland, with the salt pans 3 km from the town.
Portuguese Wikipedia gives no climate figures. The English version speaks of hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters, with lows that have reached −6.2 °C.
- Hot, dry summer
Summers are hot and dry, and English Wikipedia mentions 44.9 °C on 4 August 2018. On west-facing facades, the afternoon sun heats the room a lot. Outside blinds and solar-control glass help, and a light colour on the frame stops it getting too hot.
- Winter frost
The same source records −6.2 °C in January and February. With cold like that, the glass and the frame are the coldest points of the room. A frame with a thermal break and a good seal stop water or ice forming inside on the coldest mornings.
- A big gap between hot and cold
Between the 44.9 °C and the −6.2 °C recorded there are more than 50 degrees of difference. Profiles expand and shrink with temperature; ask for a well-made frame, with hardware that copes with the movement, and careful fitting, with a flexible joint around the opening.
- Winter rain
Winters are wet. Water gets in mostly through the joints and blocked drainage channels, and not through the glass. Check the outside joint and the sill, and clear the frame drainage channels before autumn.

| Condition | Level | Climate sheet |
|---|---|---|
| Summer | High | Hot and dry, with 44.9 °C in 2018 (English Wikipedia). |
| Winter | Medium | Mild and wet, but −6.2 °C has been recorded (same source). |
| Rain | Medium | More in the winter months, according to the same source. |

Homes in Rio Maior
The homes in the area change what is worth asking of the windows.
Historic centre
Wikipedia dates the Royal Hostel to 1619, the Misericórdia to 1759 and the Riomaiorense Theatre to 1880, so the town has buildings centuries old. In the old streets expect tall, uneven openings and thick walls. Ask for careful measuring and check the state of the render around the window.
Traditional houses
In the parishes of the municipality, such as Alcobertas, Arrouquelas or Fráguas, expect old country houses with small windows. If winter brings frost, as it has, these houses lose heat fast. When replacing, check for damp in the wall beside the opening.
Detached and semi-detached houses
In a town of 21,000 people and 10 parishes, expect detached houses with land around them, more exposed to sun and frost than a block among others. There, firm locks, a light frame colour and a well-made joint count.

Rio Maior in photos

The Fonte da Bica salt pans
3 km from the town, the salt pans use salt water that comes from underground. The photo at the top of this page shows the basins, with the hills behind. According to the tourism site we read, they are about 20 miles from the sea.
For windows this means little: the salt water comes from the ground, not the sea, and the municipality is inland, so sea-salt corrosion is not the main worry, unlike on the coast. What counts more is the gap between summer heat and the cold of frosty nights.
A city of sport, a land of coal
Rio Maior calls itself the city of Sport: the sports complex came 3rd in the 2007 IOC/IAKS international award, and there is an Olympic pool and a training centre. The Espadanal lignite mine worked until 1969.
Large buildings, such as sports halls and old industrial premises, often have large openings and panes. If you are changing windows in a space like that, ask the installer to calculate the weight of the glass and the hardware, and for sun protection on sunny facades.
General notes
The salt pans are about 3 km from the town, but the water comes from underground and the municipality is inland, about 20 miles from the sea according to a tourism site. So sea salt is not the main worry. We have no measurements of salt in the air. Clean the frame with water and a cloth, and ask for hardware that does not rust if you live right beside the basins.
English Wikipedia mentions −6.2 °C in January and February. With cold like that, glass that is cold inside gives droplets and mould. A frame with a thermal break, double glazing and a continuous seal solve most cases. To know if your home needs it, see whether the glass is wet in the morning.
The same source records 44.9 °C on 4 August 2018 and describes hot, dry summers. That is an extreme, not the normal day. On west-facing facades, outside blinds and solar-control glass help more than changing only the frame.
In the sources we read we found no local facade rules. Even so, old or listed buildings may have conditions, so ask the town council before ordering. Show photos of the building and ask for a solution with the same design.
Isolated hill houses get more sun, wind and frost. Ask for firm locks, a frame with a thermal break and a well-made joint. If the house is empty part of the year, an airing opening in the frame helps avoid mould.
Yes. When you ask for the call, write your locality and we pass the request to installers in that area. We do not install or give the quote: we connect the person asking with the person who does the work.
