About Oliveira do Hospital

Oliveira do Hospital is a town in the Coimbra district, in the Beira Alta, at the northern edge of the district. The municipality covers 234.52 km², has 17 parishes on Wikipedia’s list and had 19,413 inhabitants in 2021, against 29,038 in 1950. It borders Nelas, Seia, Arganil, Tábua and Carregal do Sal. The town has about 7,500 inhabitants and its charter dates from 1514. English Wikipedia puts it at about 500 metres, at the foot of the Serra da Estrela.

The Alva and Alvôco rivers cross the municipality, and Wikipedia puts their meeting at the Ponte das Três Entradas. The Serra do Açor reaches into part of the municipality, and Alvoco das Várzeas and São Gião belong to the Mountain Villages network. Alvoco das Várzeas, on the north bank of the Alvôco, had 314 inhabitants in 2021.

There are megalithic remains, the ruins of a Roman amphitheatre at Bobadela and the Mozarabic church of São Pedro de Lourosa. The Order of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem held several commanderies here, which is why the coat of arms carries the cross of the Order of Malta. The municipal holiday is 7 October. On the economy, the English page cites agriculture, wine and cheese, but gives no sources.

What the climate of Oliveira do Hospital asks of windows

Wikipedia has no climate data for Oliveira do Hospital. It says the Alva river carries very little water in summer and a lot in winter, because of rain, and it describes the Serra da Estrela with abundant snow in winter. With the serra close by and two rivers crossing the municipality, cold and rainy winters are to be expected. We give no figures because we do not have them from a reliable source. The installer confirms on site.

Oliveira do Hospital lies between the Alva and Alvôco rivers, at the foot of the serra. Winter rain counts more than heat.

Wikipedia gives no climate figures. So we speak of what is to be expected, and the installer confirms on site what suits your street.

Section notes Sample text · to be reviewed
  1. Winter rain

The Alva swells in winter because of rain. In exposed houses, water hits the facade and gets in through the joints. A continuous seal all round and a sill with a slope stop it running into the wall.

  2. River valleys

Near the Alva and the Alvôco the air is damper, especially in the morning. Damp attacks old wood and unprotected metals. Profiles that do not rot and hardware that is easy to clean mean less work.

  3. Cold at the foot of the serra

The serra is close by and winter is cold. Glass that is cold inside gives droplets and mould on the walls. A frame with good insulation and airing for a few minutes a day is enough in many homes, and triple only on very exposed walls.

  4. Summer with no data

Wikipedia gives no summer data. In rooms facing west, outside blinds help, and solar-control glass can pay off. Do not choose them at the cost of winter insulation, which should weigh more here.

Oliveira do Hospital in photos

Two rivers and the foot of a serra

The Alva and Alvôco cross the municipality and meet at the Ponte das Três Entradas. Wikipedia says the Alva carries very little water in summer and a lot in winter, because of rain. So rain is to be expected to hit facades harder in the cold months.

Look at the joint round the window and at the sill before winter. Water almost always gets in through the joints, not through the glass. A new window only helps if the joint is well made.

Roman amphitheatre and Mozarabic church

At Bobadela are the ruins of a Roman amphitheatre, discovered in the 1970s. At Lourosa stands the church of São Pedro, Mozarabic, which the council lists as a site of national interest. Near buildings like these there may be rules for works.

If your house is next to one of these places, ask the council first. Bring photos and the measurements of the opening, so the installer can propose a window that respects the building.

An ageing population

Between 2011 and 2021, residents aged 65 or over rose from 5,067 to 5,508, and children up to 14 fell from 2,787 to 2,114. People who have lived in the same house for many years often have old windows, in wood or iron.

For those with less strength in their hands, ask for hardware that is easy to operate and handles at the right height. Also ask about glass that gives less cold next to the pane, where people spend a lot of time sitting.

General notes

Not always. It can come from the wall, the floor or the valley air. A tighter window helps against cold, but without airing the damp stays inside the house. Open the windows a few minutes a day and look for leaks.
