About Nazaré

Nazaré is a town in the Oeste region, in the Leiria district, in the historical province of Estremadura. The municipality covers 82 km², has three parishes (Nazaré, Famalicão and Valado dos Frades) and 14,885 inhabitants (2021), of whom about 10,300 live in the town. It borders only one municipality by land, Alcobaça, which surrounds it to the north, east and south. To the west is the Atlantic.

The town joins three districts: the Praia, by the sea, the Sítio, on a cliff, and Pederneira, on a hill. According to the council, fishermen lived mostly in the high parts, Sítio and Pederneira, because pirates made the sand unsafe, and only in the 19th century did they settle by the beach, where there used to be dunes. The municipality was called Pederneira until 1912.

Fishing was the main activity for almost all of the 20th century, and the Fishing and Leisure Harbour was built in the early 1980s. Since the 1960s tourism has made Nazaré known abroad, and today it is one of the main employers in the town. The tradition of women wearing seven skirts, the top ones to protect against sea spray, became the image of the place.

Nazaré is also known for the giant waves at Praia do Norte, which form because of the Nazaré Canyon, a deep underwater valley that starts a short distance from the beach. People who live here have the sea at the door, and the windows feel it.

What the climate of Nazaré asks of windows

The Portuguese Wikipedia has no climate for Nazaré. The English version describes a Mediterranean climate, with dry summers and mild, wet winters, moderated by the Atlantic. In summer there is often fog in the morning and at the end of the day; in winter the weather is more unsettled, with rainy and stormy days. It also says there are on average only 2 days a year with highs above 30 °C and 3 with lows below 0 °C. It is a general source, so the installer confirms on site, especially on top of the cliff.

Nazaré sits in a bay open to the Atlantic: the Praia at the bottom, the Sítio on a cliff and Pederneira on a hill.

For the climate we follow English Wikipedia: dry summers, mild winters, morning fog and winter storms.

Section notes Sample text · to be reviewed
  1. Atlantic wind and storms

The bay is open to the ocean and in winter the weather is more unsettled, with stormy days. Wind pushes rain against the facade, especially on top of the Sítio. Ask for a reinforced fixing to the wall, new gaskets all round and a firm lock, and check that the outside blind can stand gusts.

  2. Sea spray and sand

The Praia and the Sítio have the sea right there, and the air carries salt. Salt settles on the glass and corrodes unprotected hardware; sand gets into the tracks of sliding doors. Ask for hardware treated for marine use, clean the tracks every week in summer and rinse the frames with fresh water.

  3. Fog and damp

Wikipedia says that in summer there is often fog in the morning and at the end of the day. Damp air and cold glass give water on the glass and mould in the corners, especially in closed holiday homes. Ventilate every day you can and ask for windows with an airing opening. A frame that insulates stops the glass getting so cold.

  4. Cool summers and late sun

The sea moderates the heat: Wikipedia speaks of only 2 days a year above 30 °C. Even so, the low late-afternoon sun comes deep into west-facing rooms. Outside blinds and solar-control glass in those rooms help, and a light-coloured frame heats up less.

Wind and salt arrive from the sea against the window. Indoors, damp air rises. The summer sun comes through the glass and warms the room.abcd

In Nazaré, wind and salt count more than heat. Installation matters as much as the material: the installer confirms everything on site.

Homes in Nazaré

The homes in the area change what is worth asking of the windows.

  • Historic centre

Pederneira, the oldest district, still has the old council hall, the pillory and the parish church, according to Wikipedia. In old streets and buildings the opening may be irregular and the facade may have rules. Ask for careful measuring and speak to the council before changing the outside look.

  • Traditional houses

In the Praia, the council describes narrow streets running at right angles to the sea, where fishermen settled from the 19th century. Expect low houses close together, with old walls and tired frames. Before replacing, check the render and the sill, and ask for firm locks because of the wind that comes up the street.

  • New apartments

Wikipedia mentions new districts from the second half of the 20th century, such as Urbisol and Rio Novo. In blocks and holiday flats closed for part of the year ventilation is missing, and the damp stays inside. Ask for windows with an airing opening and speak to the residents' association.

  • Detached and semi-detached houses

In Famalicão and Valado dos Frades, farming and ceramics parishes, expect country houses and more detached homes. They are more exposed to the wind than a house among others, and field dust gets into the tracks. Ask for a seal all round and profiles that are easy to clean.

Three districts, three heights

The Praia is at sea level, the Sítio on a cliff and Pederneira on a hill. English Wikipedia says the Memória Chapel, in the Sítio, stands beside a rocky outcrop 110 metres above the Atlantic. The council says a mechanical lift linked the Sítio to the Praia in 1889.

Height changes what a window feels. Expect more wind on top of the cliff than in a street in the Praia, and more salt and sand in the Praia. Tell the installer which district you live in: it is one of the first things they will ask.

Seven skirts and sea spray

It is part of Nazaré tradition for women to wear seven skirts. Wikipedia explains that they waited for their husbands and sons on the beach, for hours, and used the top skirts to protect their heads and shoulders from the sea spray.

Today sea spray is still what tires a window most by the sea. Salt settles on the glass and the hardware. Wipe with a damp cloth now and then, clean the tracks and ask for parts treated for a marine setting.

Fields and ceramics behind the coast

According to the council, Famalicão is 8 km from the town, at the foot of the Serra da Pescaria, and lives from farming, fruit, wood fibre and ceramics. Valado dos Frades is 6 km away, by the A8 access, and has carrots and ceramics, porcelain and earthenware as its base. The Serra da Pescaria and Praia do Salgado are places for paragliding.

People living in these parishes do not have the sea at the door, but they feel the open wind of the countryside. Ask for a firm fixing and profiles that are easy to clean.

General notes

Expect more wind up there, so the fixing to the wall and the gaskets count a lot. Ask for a seal all round and a firm lock, and tell the installer the house is in the Sítio. Outside blinds must stand gusts.
