About Gouveia

Gouveia is a town in the Guarda district, in the Beira Alta, on the north-west slope of the Serra da Estrela. The municipality covers 300.61 km², has 16 parishes and about 12,200 inhabitants (the latest figure on Wikipedia), against 27,673 in 1950. It borders Mangualde, Fornos de Algodres, Celorico da Beira, Guarda, Manteigas and Seia, and the Mondego river marks much of the boundary to the north and south.

Shepherding and transhumance were the main activity and gave rise to the wool industry. In 1873 there were 23 factories in the municipality, and in 1902 a workers’ strike began here that Wikipedia calls the first big workers’ strike in Portugal. Ferdinand the Great took the place from the Moors in 1055, and King Sancho I gave it a charter in 1186.

The Castle Quarter has a medieval layout, and the Casa da Torre, from the 16th century, is a National Monument. In the Casais de Folgosinho, at about 900 metres and inside the Serra da Estrela Natural Park, the traditional houses have thatched outbuildings. Of the 49 hamlets that once existed, only 9 are still lived in. The pilgrimage of the Senhor do Calvário takes place on the Monday after the second Sunday of August.

What the climate of Gouveia asks of windows

Wikipedia has no climate data for Gouveia. About the Serra da Estrela it says snow is abundant in winter and the winter is harsh. The town lies on the north-west slope, below the summits, and the Casais de Folgosinho are at about 900 metres. So a cold winter and snow are to be expected, mostly in the higher houses. We give no figures because we do not have them from a reliable source. The installer confirms on site.

Gouveia sits on the slope of the Serra da Estrela, with the Mondego running through the municipality. The house catches the wind and the whole view of the valley.

Section notes Sample text · to be reviewed
  1. Slope wind

On a slope open to the valley, the wind hits the facade head-on and gets in through any gap. A continuous seal all round, gaskets in good shape and a firm lock are worth more than thicker glass.

  2. Snow and frost up high

Wikipedia speaks of abundant snow in the Serra da Estrela. In the higher houses, frost forms on cold glass and frames. A frame with good insulation and double glazing, or triple on the most exposed walls, cuts the water and ice inside.

  3. Stone that cools

In stone houses the thick walls cool slowly and take long to warm up. The cold spot moves to the joint around the opening, where mould shows. Ask for a well-insulated joint and do not block the ventilation the house already had.

  4. Winter sun

We have no sun data. On south-facing facades the low winter sun helps warm the room, so it is best not to darken the glass too much. A low-emissivity glass is usually enough, without strong solar treatment.

Wind and salt arrive from the water against the window. Indoors, damp air rises. The summer sun comes through the glass and warms the room.abcd

Homes in Gouveia

The homes in the area change what is worth asking of the windows.

  • Historic centre

In the Castle Quarter the layout is medieval and the streets are narrow. There are granite houses and noble buildings, such as the Casa da Torre, which is a National Monument. Near monuments, speak to the council before changing a facade, and ask for careful measuring where the openings are not all alike.

  • Traditional houses

In the mountain villages, such as the Casais de Folgosinho, the houses are stone and some have thatched outbuildings. The walls are thick and the openings small. When replacing windows, check the state of the stone and render and ask for a continuous seal against the wind.

Gouveia in photos

The serra above the town

Gouveia lies on the slope of the Serra da Estrela, and the Mondego river runs through the municipality. The viewpoints of Paixotão and Monte Calvário give a wide view over the valley. A house with a wide view is an exposed house: wind and rain hit the facade head-on.

Ask for a continuous seal and a careful joint, especially on upper floors and isolated houses. On frosty days, glass that is cold on the inside shows at once where the house loses heat.

Wool mills and big buildings

In 1870 there were 57 mechanical looms in Portugal, and 20 were in Gouveia. That past left big old buildings, such as the Serpa-Pimentel manor, now the Municipal Library, and the Town Hall, a former Jesuit college.

In old buildings put to new uses the openings are tall and the walls thick. Ask for careful measuring, ask about profiles that respect the design of the building and check with the council whether there are facade rules.

General notes

Wikipedia gives no snow data for the town. About the Serra da Estrela it says snow is abundant in winter. It is more likely in high houses, such as the Casais de Folgosinho, than in the town. Ask the installer and people who live in the area.
