About Coruche

Coruche is a town in the Santarém district, in the Ribatejo, about 80 km from Lisbon. The town has about 9,000 inhabitants and is the seat of one of the largest municipalities in the country: 1,115.72 km², but only 17,356 inhabitants (2021). It borders Almeirim, Chamusca, Ponte de Sor, Mora, Arraiolos, Montemor-o-Novo, Montijo, Benavente and Salvaterra de Magos.

The Sorraia river runs past the town, between the horizon of the floodplain and the hill of the chapel of Nossa Senhora do Castelo, and the municipal tourist office speaks of cork oak woods as far as the eye can see. The council presents Coruche as the world capital of cork and promotes FICOR, the International Cork Fair. The Cork Oak and Cork Observatory, a building clad in cork, has laboratories and a documentation centre on the cork oak and cork.

People have lived in this valley since the Palaeolithic, and the megalithic group in the south-east of the municipality, with about thirty monuments, dates from between the 5th and 3rd millennium BC. The Romans left traces in the Sorraia valley and, in Islamic times, Coruche lay between Santarém and Évora. The first charter dates from 1182. The festivals of Nossa Senhora do Castelo, from 14 to 18 August, include bullfights and bull runs. The Municipal Museum, opened in 2001, stands in the old centre, on the bank of the Sorraia.

What the climate of Coruche asks of windows

Wikipedia has no climate data for Coruche. The municipality is large and lies by the Sorraia river, on the floodplain, with cork oak woods, so hot summers are to be expected. We give no figures because we do not have them from a reliable source. The council cites projections from the ClimAdaPT.Local project: a possible fall in total yearly rain, higher temperatures, more heat waves and more episodes of very heavy rain in a short time. These are projections, not measurements.

Wikipedia gives no climate figures. The council speaks of more heat and heavy rain in a short time, so windows must cope with sun and water.

Section notes Sample text · to be reviewed
  1. Sun and heat

The council projects more heat and more heat waves for the municipality. In a house in open country, with little shade from other buildings, the sun hits the facade head-on. Outside blinds, a light colour and solar-control glass on the south and west faces keep the heat outside.

  2. Heavy rain all at once

The council cites projections of less rain a year, but with more episodes of very heavy rain in a short time. The water from those downpours gets in through the joints and the tracks, not through the glass. A well-sealed outside joint and unblocked tracks count for more than the type of frame.

  3. Mornings by the river

Near the Sorraia and the floodplain there may be more damp and dew in the morning, but we have no measurements. Droplets on the glass on waking mean the glass is cold or the house was not aired. Both are solved with double glazing and a few minutes of open window.

  4. An isolated house in the woods

The municipality has 1,115 km² and few inhabitants, so expect isolated houses, among cork oaks and dirt tracks. Dust and wind with nothing to stop them call for a firm lock, gaskets that are easy to clean and hardware that gives little trouble.

Wind and salt arrive from the water against the window. Indoors, damp air rises. The summer sun comes through the glass and warms the room.abcd

In Coruche, strong sun and rain that falls all at once count for more than salt or wind. The installer confirms on site what suits your house.

Homes in Coruche

The homes in the area change what is worth asking of the windows.

  • Historic centre

The old centre of the town, by the Sorraia and the hill of the chapel of Nossa Senhora do Castelo, is an Urban Renewal Area. The municipality has six more, among them Couço, Bairro Novo and Vila Nova da Erra, and the council publishes information on tax benefits for renovation work. Ask whether your house is in one and which rules apply.

  • Traditional houses

In the villages of the municipality, such as Couço, Erra or Branca, expect old country houses. The Rural Unit of the Museum keeps the traditional crafts and know-how of the area, and many houses from that time have thick walls and openings that are not all alike. Before replacing a window, look at the render and the wood around the opening.

  • Detached and semi-detached houses

With 1,115 km² and 17,356 inhabitants, expect detached houses and farmhouses set far apart, with no blocks to give shade or shelter from the wind. An opening facing the fields takes the sun head-on and the dust of the tracks. Ask for firm locks, outside blinds and gaskets that are easy to clean.

The cork capital

Coruche presents itself as the world capital of cork. The Cork Oak and Cork Observatory is clad in cork, and FICOR brings to the town an exhibition by the Sorraia and a series of talks at the Observatory.

Cork is widely used as insulation, but a wall or ceiling with cork does not solve the opening: heat and cold pass through the glass and the frame. If your house already has cork insulation, tell the installer, so that the new window matches the rest of the house.

More heat and heavy rain, says the council

The Coruche council cites projections pointing to higher temperatures, more heat waves and very heavy rain concentrated in a short time. They are not measurements, but they hint at what windows will have to cope with.

With more heat, outside blinds, light colours and solar-control glass count for more. With heavy rain all at once, a well-sealed outside joint and clean drainage tracks count for more than the type of glass.

General notes

The old centre is an Urban Renewal Area. There may be rules for the facade, and there are tax benefits for renovation work. Ask the town council before ordering, bring photos of the facade and say whether you want to keep the design of the current window.
