About Abrantes

Abrantes is a town in the Middle Tagus, in the Santarém district, in the historical province of Ribatejo. It has 16,802 inhabitants (2021) and lies on the right bank of the Tagus. The municipality covers 714.69 km² and has 13 parishes, and it borders Vila de Rei, Sardoal, Mação, Gavião, Ponte de Sor, Chamusca, Constância, Vila Nova da Barquinha and Tomar.

The town stands on a hill about 100 m above sea level and looks over the Tagus valley. English Wikipedia says the hill is covered with olive groves, gardens and vines. Two bridges join the banks: the road bridge, finished in 1870, and the railway bridge, opened in 1889. The Tagus runs 30 km through the municipality, and the Castelo do Bode reservoir also touches it.

On top of the hill stands Abrantes Castle, a Property of Public Interest since 1957. The town received its first charter in 1179 and became a city in 1916. Today it is a commercial and industrial centre for a fertile farming region, with metalworking and engineering industry and a truck maker, Mitsubishi Fuso Truck Europe. Local specialities are mostly sweets, such as the palha de Abrantes, bolo real and queijos-do-céu, and the National Fair of Traditional Sweets fills the old centre on the last weekend of October.

What the climate of Abrantes asks of windows

English Wikipedia describes a Mediterranean climate in Abrantes, with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. The town lies on the Tagus floodplain, so the gap between day and night is large: the average yearly low is 8.7 °C, the average yearly high is 23.3 °C, and there are on average 31 days below 0 °C in the cold months. We have no rain or wind data from a reliable source, so we give none.

Abrantes stands on a hill above the Tagus, about 100 m up, with the valley at its feet.

The climate figures come from English Wikipedia: cool nights, warm afternoons and dry summers.

  1. From day to night

With an average low of 8.7 °C and an average high of 23.3 °C a year, glass and frame go from the cold of dawn to the heat of the afternoon. The profile expands and shrinks every day. A firm fixing to the opening and flexible gaskets cope better with that movement.

  2. Frost on winter nights

There are on average 31 days below 0 °C in the cold months. In single glass, or in a frame without a thermal break, the cold comes through and droplets, even ice, appear inside. Double glazing, a multi-chamber profile and a continuous seal reduce the problem.

  3. Dry, hot summers

Summers are hot and dry. On a hill with little shade, a sunny facade heats up until late afternoon. Outside blinds, light colours and, on the west side, solar-control glass do more than the type of frame. With cool nights, it pays to air the rooms at dawn.

  4. Wind and passing noise

The town sits on a height, next to important rail and road links. The source has no wind or noise data, so the position of the house counts: near the line or the avenue, ask about glass of different thicknesses; on the high streets, ask for firm locks.

Wind and salt arrive from the water against the window. Indoors, damp air rises. The summer sun comes through the glass and warms the room.abcd

Homes in Abrantes

The homes in the area change what is worth asking of the windows.

  • Historic centre

On the hill, around the castle and the churches of Santa Maria do Castelo, São Vicente and São João Baptista, the streets are narrow and the houses have several floors. The castle is a Property of Public Interest, so speak to the council before changing a facade that can be seen from it. Many openings differ from one another, and each needs its own measurement.

  • Traditional houses

In the rural parishes, such as Mouriscas, Bemposta or Alvega, expect old houses with a yard, and the area still keeps crafts such as basket-making, esparto weaving, pottery and hand weaving. Houses like these have thick walls and lose heat slowly. Before replacing a window, look at the render and the stone around the opening.

  • New apartments

The municipality grew from 7,255 inhabitants in 1900 to more than 41,000 in 2001, according to English Wikipedia. So expect blocks from many periods, with windows that differ a lot from one district to the next. The newer ones often lack their own ventilation: with the home shut tight, damp from the kitchen and shower has nowhere to go.

Abrantes in photos

A hill above the Tagus

People living at the top of the hill have wide views, but the high streets and the facades facing the valley take more sun and probably more wind. Wikipedia gives no wind data, so check on site.

With cool nights and warm afternoons, what you notice most is the distance between the cold glass of the morning and the sun of late day. A window that insulates well and an outside blind hold the heat by day and the cold by night.

Trains, roads and bridges

Abrantes lies where important rail and road links cross, such as the Beira Baixa line and the access to the A23, according to English Wikipedia. Anyone living near the line or a main avenue may hear more noise, but we have no measurements.

Here the glass counts for more than the frame. Double glazing with two panes of different thickness and a continuous seal usually cuts more noise than changing only the profile. Tell the installer which side the sound comes from.

General notes

Abrantes Castle is a Property of Public Interest. Near listed buildings there may be rules for facades. Speak to the town council before changing how the outside looks, and bring photos of the current facade, so the installer can propose a similar design.
