About Loures

Loures lies north of Lisbon and is the fifth most populous municipality in the country, with over 200,000 inhabitants. Its neighbours are Arruda dos Vinhos, Vila Franca de Xira and the Tagus estuary, Lisbon, Odivelas, Sintra and Mafra.

The municipality splits into three large zones. The north is rural, with Bucelas, Fanhões, Lousa and the Tojais. The south is urban, with Loures and Santo António dos Cavaleiros. The east is industrial, by the Tagus, with Sacavém, Bobadela, Camarate and Santa Iria de Azóia.

Human presence is old: there are prehistoric dolmens and caves and Roman remains. The parish of Loures appears in documents in 1118. In 1833 a battle between liberals and Miguelists was fought in the fields of Loures, and it was here that the Republic was proclaimed on 4 October 1910, a day before the rest of the country.

In 1998, seven parishes in the south-west formed the municipality of Odivelas. Today Loures has two cities, Loures and Sacavém, and seven towns. Bucelas has the Museum of Wine and the Vine. In a municipality this varied there is countryside, suburbs and factories, and windows have to adapt to each.

What the climate of Loures asks of windows

Wikipedia has no climate section for Loures. The municipality is in the Lisbon area, so the regional climate applies: Mediterranean, with hot, dry summers and cool, rainy winters. Inside the municipality there are likely differences: the northern hills should be cooler and windier and, in the east, by the Tagus estuary, the air is damper. In a detached house in the north, the window feels the countryside; in the south, it feels the city.

Loures runs from the hills and vineyards of the north to the Tagus estuary in the east. One municipality holds countryside, suburbs and factories.

So wind, dust and damp change from one parish to the next. The drawing shows a house in the north of the municipality.

Section notes Sample text · to be reviewed
  1. Hill wind and Tagus air

In the north, the knolls and fields of Bucelas and Fanhões are more open to the wind. In the east, the air comes off the Tagus estuary and is damper. In the south, among buildings, the wind hardly gets in, but it does not clear the air either. The orientation of each window weighs more than the municipality average.

  2. Noise and dust

In the east, near Sacavém, Bobadela and Santa Iria de Azóia, there are industrial zones and big roads, and with them noise and dust. In the south, between Loures and Santo António dos Cavaleiros, the problem is traffic. Good seals hold back dust, and double glazing lowers the noise.

  3. Damp by the river

Near the Tagus estuary the air is damper, and water appears on the glass and mould in cold corners. On the northern hills, winter nights can be colder. A window that insulates well helps in both cases, but only if the home is aired every day.

  4. Summer sun

Summers are hot, and south- and west-facing rooms heat up a lot, especially in houses with large openings and little shade. Outside shutters make more difference than the type of frame. In a southern block, the top floor feels the sun most.

Wind and salt arrive from the water against the window. Indoors, damp air rises. The summer sun comes through the glass and warms the room.abcd

For detached houses, ask the installer to look at the side most exposed to wind. The rest is confirmed on site.

Homes in Loures

The homes in the area change what is worth asking of the windows.

  • New apartments

In the south, in Loures and Santo António dos Cavaleiros, apartment blocks predominate. There the seals, street noise and sun on the facades weigh more than wind. Ask the residents' association whether there are rules on colour and design.

  • Detached and semi-detached houses

In the rural north, near Bucelas, Fanhões and Lousa, there are detached houses and estates, with large openings and more wall in the open air. Wind and rain hit harder, and the countryside is dusty in summer. Reinforce the seals on the most exposed side.

  • Historic centre

In the old core of Loures, near the Church of Santa Maria and the Mitra Palace, and in the town of Bucelas, there are houses many decades old. Walls are thick and openings can be irregular. Ask for measurements taken on site and find out about facade rules.

Local notes

Noise

In the east, next to the industrial zone and the big roads, traffic noise can be constant. Double glazing and good seals help.

Bucelas and the rural north

Bucelas is wine and estate country, with the Museum of Wine and the Vine. In homes surrounded by fields and vineyards, openings are wide and the house stands alone, with no buildings to slow the wind. If your home is like that, ask the installer to look closely at the side facing the prevailing wind and at the seals on rainy days. In summer, dust from the fields gets in through the tracks: a good seal helps here too. Also ask whether the quote includes removing and taking away the old window, which in detached houses can be more work.

Sacavém, Bobadela and the industrial side

In the east of the municipality, by the Tagus, is the industrial zone. Sacavém, Bobadela, Camarate and Santa Iria de Azóia mix neighbourhoods, factories and roads. People who live there notice more dust and more noise from lorries and trains than those in the rural north. Tell the installer that your home is near a road or a factory, and ask for a window with a good seal and double glazing. Also ask how the tracks can be cleaned regularly. If dust is heavy, ask about double rubber seals and tracks that are easy to clean.

General notes

I live in a house near Bucelas. What counts most?

Wind and rain hit detached houses, with no buildings nearby. Pay attention to the seals and the edge finish on the most exposed side. Also ask about latches, which should lock at several points. In summer, dust from the fields gets in through the tracks.

In Sacavém or Santa Iria dust and noise are a nuisance. Now what?

Good seals hold back dust, and double glazing lowers noise from busy roads. Panes of two thicknesses help more with low sounds. The shutter box also lets noise through. Ask the installer to check that on site.

Is winter cold in Loures?

It is cool and damp, without extreme cold, but on the northern hills nights can be colder. Water on the glass and mould appear in homes that are not aired enough, especially near the estuary. A window that insulates well helps. So does airing.

I live in a block in Santo António dos Cavaleiros. Can I change the windows?

Ask the residents' administration. The facade may have rules on colour and design. If so, ask for the answer in writing. Only then ask for quotes.

The municipality is big. Can I ask if I live in Fanhões or Lousa?

Yes. Give your parish in the request, so the contact goes to the right area. The more exact the address, the better. JanelaCerta does not install windows: it passes the request to installers in that area.

Can an installer see my old house in the core of Loures?

They should. In an old house, walls and openings are irregular, so measurements have to be taken on site. Ask for a written proposal. Also ask whether the council has facade rules.
