About Setúbal

Setúbal is a city and district capital on the north bank of the Sado estuary, south of Lisbon. Across the estuary lies the Tróia peninsula, and the Arrábida mountains are nearby.

The city lives from its port, fishing and tourism. The estuary is known for its dolphins.

The centre has many old buildings. Near the water there is wind, salty air and damp, and summers are hot. Changing windows here calls for attention to the climate and to the home.

What the climate of Setúbal asks of windows

Setúbal has a Mediterranean climate by the water: hot summers and mild, damp winters. Wind comes off the estuary and summer sun comes in strongly.

Setúbal sits by the Sado estuary, with the Arrábida mountains nearby. Near the water there is wind, salty air and damp, and summers are hot.

Many homes and buildings in the city are old, and old windows let in cold, heat and noise. Choosing and installing new ones asks for attention to a few details.

Section notes Sample text · to be reviewed
  1. Wind from the sea and the estuary

Wind comes off the water and pushes air and rain against the window. Good seals and good installation keep the air out.

  2. Salty air

Near the water there is salt in the air. Over time it attacks some metals. The material and the hardware must cope, and it helps to clean the window now and then.

  3. Damp by the estuary

Near the estuary the air is more humid. If the home is not aired, water appears on the glass and mould in the corners.

  4. Sun and summer heat

Summers are hot and the sun comes in strongly, especially through south- or west-facing windows. Good glass helps keep the home cooler.

Wind and salt arrive from the water against the window. Indoors, damp air rises. The summer sun comes through the glass and warms the room.abcd

Homes in Setúbal

The homes in the area change what is worth asking of the windows.

  • Older apartment blocks

The centre has many old buildings, with tall windows and thick walls. Old windows lose heat and let noise in. A new window has to fit well in an old wall, so installation matters a lot.

  • New apartments

In more recent buildings windows are usually aluminium or PVC. If they are old, what matters most is the sealing and the summer sun.

  • Detached and semi-detached houses

Around the city there are houses with large windows. The glass and an outside sun shield, such as shutters, make a difference in summer.

Old building in the centre: before you replace

Before asking for quotes for an old building, it is worth doing four things:

  • Ask the building administration whether there are rules for facade windows.
  • Ask the town council whether the area is protected.
  • Check the state of the wall around the window.
  • Ask the installer to look at everything on site.

General notes

Do windows cope with salty air and estuary damp?

They do, if the material and the finish are the right ones. PVC does not rust. Aluminium needs a good finish and a clean now and then. For damp, windows that insulate well and airing the home every day both help.

I have an old building in central Setúbal. Can I change the windows?

Usually yes, but in buildings with a residents' association or in protected areas there may be rules for the facade. Ask the building administration or the town council first.

The installer can also help you understand what is needed.

Do windows help keep the home cooler in summer?

They do. Good glass and a well-sealed window stop part of the heat. Outside shutters or blinds also make a difference. Ask the installer about glass with a solar coating.

Do the wind and the city noise come through the window?

A well-sealed window lets through less air and less noise. Double glazing also helps against noise. Installation counts for a lot: a badly sealed gap lets everything through.

See the guide Double or triple glazing.

Can I ask if I live in Azeitão, Palmela or Sesimbra?

Yes. Write your town in the request. We do not install: we pass the request on to installers in that area. See also the nearby areas.
