About Leiria

Leiria is the capital of the Leiria district and lies close to the west coast. The municipality covers about 565 km² and has 18 parishes, and reaches the Atlantic Ocean in the north-west. It borders Pombal, Ourém, Batalha, Porto de Mós, Alcobaça and Marinha Grande.

The city is washed by the Lis river and its tributary, the Lena. The first known inhabitants were a Celtiberian people, and later the Romans occupied a settlement nearby, about 7 km away. King Afonso Henriques had the castle built in 1135, after taking Leiria from the Moors. The castle seen today was largely rebuilt in the 19th century by the architect Ernesto Korrodi.

The economy lives from trade, services, farming and industry. In Leiria and Marinha Grande, plastics and mould companies were for decades among the biggest in the country, and Marinha Grande has glass factories. Tourism and construction also count.

For a home this means a transition city: not just coast, not yet interior, with a river valley, new urban areas and many rural parishes around.

What the climate of Leiria asks of windows

According to Wikipedia, Leiria has a Mediterranean climate with ocean influence (type Csa). Winters are cool and humid, with about 40 rainy days and some frost. Summers are hot, with daytime averages of 27 °C and highs that can pass 35 °C. In autumn, rain and wind sometimes arrive hard. Snow in the urban area is rare and comes decades apart.

Leiria lies between the sea and the inland hills, in the Lis river valley. Air from the ocean arrives, but with less salt.

Winters are damp and summers hot. The house suffers from rain in some months and from the sun in others.

  1. Autumn rain and wind

In autumn, rain and wind push water against the window, especially on west-facing facades. That is when you find out whether the joint between frame and wall is well made. Gaskets in good shape and a clear drainage slot make the difference.

  2. Ocean air

The municipality reaches the Atlantic, and that humid air rises up the Lis valley. In the city centre salt matters little, but in the parishes closer to the coast it pays to pick resistant hardware. Tell the installer which part of the municipality the house is in.

  3. Damp winters and frost

Winters are cool and humid, and Wikipedia mentions frost and ice on the coldest days, with lows that have reached -5 °C. A frame that insulates well avoids droplets on the glass and mould. Double glazing is usually the starting point; triple is only justified on very cold walls.

  4. Hot, sunny summers

Summers bring many hours of sun and heat, and Wikipedia records a maximum of 42 °C in August 2016. On south and west facades, solar-control glass and outside blinds keep the house cooler. Light colours on the frame also help.

Homes in Leiria

The homes in the area change what is worth asking of the windows.

  • Historic centre

Near the castle and the old streets, by the Church of São Pedro, there are houses with thick walls and irregular windows. These openings call for careful measuring and often for made-to-measure windows. In an area with listed monuments the facade may have rules: ask the town council.

  • New apartments

The city has grown a lot, and there are many modern blocks in the new areas. Even with recent windows, winter damp stays trapped if the home does not ventilate. Look for windows with an airing opening and check that the kitchen and bathroom grilles work.

  • Detached and semi-detached houses

The municipality has 18 parishes, many rural, and so many houses. They tend to have more walls exposed to wind and rain than a flat, and more windows to replace. It is worth planning the work facade by facade, starting with the most exposed.

An autumn of rain and wind

According to Wikipedia, autumn in Leiria is mild, but sometimes brings rain and wind. It is the right time to check the home is ready for winter.

Look at the joint around the windows and the corners of the glass: if water runs down or there are dark stains, water is getting in. Check that the window’s drainage slots are clear and the gaskets are not worn. These small things decide whether a good window works well on stormy days.

From the castle to the parishes: each zone has its own climate

The municipality of Leiria is big and runs from the castle and the Lis river, in the valley, to the Atlantic coast in the north-west. In each zone wind, rain and salt weigh differently.

In the centre, damp and frost count more. Near the coast, wind and salty air. In a higher, rural parish, the cold. When asking for quotes, say which parish the house is in and ask the installer to explain what changes because of that.

General notes

It has snowed in Leiria. Should I choose windows for snow?

Wikipedia says snow in the urban area comes decades apart, and that the last time was in 2006, without lying on the ground. It is not worth choosing a window just for that. What weighs more is rain, damp and the occasional frost.

Water comes in around the window when it rains. Is the glass faulty?

Almost never the glass. Water usually gets past the joint between frame and wall, or through blocked drainage slots. Ask the fitter to check those points, and to use sealing materials suited to outdoors.

Do summers get very hot?

Wikipedia mentions highs of 35 °C on the hottest days and a record of 42 °C in 2016. Light colours and outside blinds take away a good part of the heat. For rooms facing south or west, it is worth asking about solar-control glass.

The house is damp in winter. Will new windows fix it?

They help keep the glass less cold, which reduces droplets. But the house also needs ventilating, or the damp comes back. Open the windows a few minutes a day, keep the grilles clear and avoid drying laundry indoors without airing.

I live in a house outside town. Is it different from a flat?

A house has more walls in the open air, so more gaps and more exposed glass. It is worth reviewing all the windows, not just one room. Tell the installer which parish the house is in, because wind changes between the Lis valley and the coastal area.

I live in Marinha Grande or Batalha. Can I ask?

Yes. Give your locality in the request and we pass it on to installers in that area. We do not install, we only connect the person asking with the person who does the work. Marinha Grande lies between Leiria and the sea, so wind and salt are a little greater than in central Leiria.
