About Viseu
Viseu is the capital of the Viseu district and of the Dão-Lafões sub-region, in the northern interior of the Centro region. The municipality covers about 507 km², has 25 parishes and close to 109,000 inhabitants (2024). It lies on a plateau between 400 and 700 m above sea level, which Wikipedia calls the Viseu Plateau.
The city is ringed by mountains: Caramulo to the west, Estrela to the south, Montemuro and Lapa to the north and others. The Vouga, Dão and Pavia rivers water the municipality. Most of the municipality rests on granite, and the city has been called the “City of Green Pine”, because of its pine woods, now mixed with eucalyptus and mimosa.
Viseu’s origins go back to the hillfort era and the city gained importance under the Romans, thanks to a crossing of roads. The Cava de Viriato, an eight-sided defensive structure two kilometres around, is one of its oldest marks. In the 6th century, under the Visigoths, it became a diocese seat, and the cathedral, on top of the hill, still dominates the centre.
Today Viseu is an administrative, commercial and services centre. Farming occupies few people, mainly fruit, apples and Dão wines. In 2007 a DECO survey put it among the cities with the best quality of life in the country. For anyone choosing windows, what counts most is the contrast between cold winter and hot summer.
What the climate of Viseu asks of windows
According to Wikipedia, Viseu has a Mediterranean climate with continental and maritime influence, and the Caramulo range softens air masses from the west. Winters are cool to cold, damp and relatively windy, especially in January. Spring is mild. Summer is hot and dry, with highs reaching 30 or 33 °C, and autumn is damp and cool. The temperature gap between day and night is large.
Viseu sits on a plateau ringed by mountains. The Caramulo range, to the west, holds back part of the damp sea air.
Winter is cold and damp, summer hot and dry. The same house goes through two climates over the year.
- Cold January wind
Wikipedia says Viseu is relatively windy, especially in January. In that month cold wind finds every gap in an old or badly fitted window. A continuous seal, a lock that closes tight and careful fitting count for more than the number of panes.
- Dry air and dust
Summer is dry, and dry air brings dust into the tracks and gaskets. PVC profiles, which wipe clean with a damp cloth, and tracks free of dirt keep the window running smoothly. It is worth cleaning the tracks at the end of summer, before the first rains.
- Winter cold and damp
Winters are cool to cold and damp, with monthly averages of 6 to 10 °C. On cold glass, the damp from the house condenses and shows up as ice or droplets. A frame that insulates, a less cold inner pane and airing the house a few minutes a day avoid mould in the corners.
- Hot, dry summers
Summers are hot and dry, with strong sun and highs between 30 and 33 °C. On south and west facades, outside blinds and solar-control glass stop heat before it gets in. Because nights cool down, ventilating at night helps cool the house.

In Viseu the cold winter and the hot summer both count. Ask the installer to look at the orientation of each facade.
Homes in Viseu
The homes in the area change what is worth asking of the windows.
Historic centre
Around the cathedral, the Largo da Sé and the gates of the old wall there are old granite streets and houses with thick walls. New windows must fit those openings well, which are rarely straight. Near monuments, the facade may have rules: ask the council before ordering.
Detached and semi-detached houses
In the municipality, with 25 parishes, there are many houses and farmsteads among pine woods and fields, on granite ground. They have walls exposed to the plateau wind and windows that take the rain head on. Plan the work facade by facade and start with the most exposed.
New apartments
In more recent blocks, what weighs most in winter is heat escaping through the glass and the frame. Ask for the insulation value of the whole window, not just the glass. Ventilation also counts, because winters are damp.

Hot days, cold nights
In Viseu the gap between day and night is large, according to Wikipedia. A window spends the day in the sun and the night in the cold, and the frame expands with heat and shrinks with cold. That tests the gaskets over the years.
Gaskets in good shape, careful fitting and hardware that can be adjusted are what keep the window shut. If an old window starts to whistle or let air in, the problem is usually there, and not in the glass.
Granite houses and old streets
Most of the municipality is granite, and old houses in Viseu have thick, cold walls that take a long time to warm in winter. The window is the weakest point of that wall.
In the cathedral area and around the old wall gates, such as the Porta do Soar and the Porta dos Cavaleiros, streets are narrow and houses old. Ask for very careful measuring, check the state of the stone around the opening and ask whether the facade has rules. A good finish is worth as much as the window.
General notes
Does the Caramulo range shield Viseu from the sea wind?
Wikipedia says the range softens air masses from the west, but that the Mondego valley helps them in. So there is wind, especially in January. On west-facing facades, it is worth paying extra attention to the seals.
Is triple glazing needed in Viseu?
With cool to cold, damp winters, triple can pay off on the most exposed walls, especially to the north. In sheltered rooms, well-fitted double may be enough. Ask the installer to compare the two options for your facade, and to explain the difference in weight.
How do I avoid ice on the inside of the glass?
Ice appears when the inner pane gets very cold and the air in the home is humid. Better glass, a frame with a thermal break and airing the house a few minutes a day help. Avoid drying laundry indoors without ventilating.
I live in a granite house. Is it harder to replace windows?
Thick stone walls call for careful measuring and a good finish. Ask them to check the state of the stone around the opening before closing it up. If the window will sit deep in the opening, also ask about sills that help water run off.
Do the hot, dry summers call for outside blinds?
They help a lot on south and west facades, because they stop the sun before the glass. Solar-control glass completes the effect. Because nights are cool, opening the windows at the end of the day helps cool the house.
I live in a neighbouring municipality, such as Mangualde or Tondela. Can I ask?
Yes. Write your locality in the request and we pass it on to installers in that area. We do not install, we only connect the person asking with the person who does the work. Also say the approximate altitude and window orientation, because the climate changes between the plateau and the mountains.
