About Loulé

Loulé is the largest and most populous municipality in the Algarve, with about 72,000 inhabitants (2021) and almost 764 km². It has two cities, Loulé and Quarteira, and nine parishes. It borders Faro, Albufeira, Silves, São Brás de Alportel, Tavira and, further north, Almodôvar and Alcoutim.

The city of Loulé lies about 10 km from the sea, over 100 metres above sea level, among hills. It is a city of Arab origin, with a small almedina, and today has a historic centre with the Municipal Market, from the early 20th century. It is known for its Carnival parade and for the MED Festival of world music, held in the centre. The Festa da Mãe Soberana takes the image of Nossa Senhora da Piedade in procession every year.

On the coast, in the same municipality, lie Quarteira and the so-called Golden Triangle: Vilamoura, Quinta do Lago and Vale do Lobo. Vilamoura has a marina, a casino and five golf courses. Inland lie the barrocal and the hills, with villages such as Alte, Salir and Querença, and the municipality also has a rock-salt mine.

The railway reached the Algarve in 1887 and changed life in the region. Today the municipality combines a tourist coast, a market city and hill villages.

What the climate of Loulé asks of windows

Loulé has a Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers and mild, damp winters. According to Wikipedia, summer temperatures range from 19 to 27 degrees and winter ones from 8 to 14, and the sun shines about 2,500 hours a year. The city is far from the beach, so salt matters less than in Quarteira or Vilamoura. Inland, winter nights are cooler. The window should insulate against damp cold and stop the afternoon sun.

Loulé sits between the coast and the hills, on rolling ground. It is dry in summer, and winter brings rain and damp. From the centre, the beach is about 10 km away.

Distance from the sea changes what the window must withstand. What counts here is the home and where it stands.

Section notes Sample text · to be reviewed
  1. Hill air and wind

Between the coast and the hills, wind changes from area to area. In a home at the top of a hill, weak sealing shows more, and the cold air of winter nights comes in through gaps. In ground-floor homes on sheltered streets, wind bothers less.

  2. Salt only near the coast

In Loulé town, about 10 km from the sea, salt matters little. In Quarteira, Vilamoura and Almancil, by the beach, hardware that can take it is wise, with regular cleaning. Inland, dust from dirt roads is more common than salt.

  3. Winter damp and cold

Winters are damp and the thick walls of old homes cool slowly. Homes with little airing end up with mould, especially in corners and behind wardrobes. Double glazing and a window that seals well reduce cold glass and the water that forms in the morning.

  4. Summer sun until late afternoon

Summers are hot and dry. West-facing windows catch sun until late and heat the living room as people get home. Shutters outside and glass with a solar coating hold back the heat before it reaches the room.

Homes in Loulé

The homes in the area change what is worth asking of the windows.

  • Historic centre

The centre of Loulé has old houses on narrow streets, which tend to have thick walls, near the market and the festival area. Ask the town council whether rules apply to the facade. Check the state of the plaster and sills before deciding.

  • Detached and semi-detached houses

Around the town and in the hill villages, such as Alte and Salir, there are houses and country homes. Away from the sea, the morning chill is felt more, and the homes have many exposed walls. Windows and sealing weigh on winter comfort.

  • New apartments

On the coast, in Quarteira and Vilamoura, there are many apartments, some for holidays, that stay shut part of the year. Near the beach salt and sand matter, and balcony doors are the most exposed point. A ventilation grille prevents mould while nobody is there.

From sea to hills: the window depends on the area

The municipality of Loulé runs from the beach to the interior. The right window depends on where the home is.

  • Coast (Quarteira, Vilamoura, Almancil): salt, sand and homes shut part of the year.
  • Loulé town, 10 km from the sea: less salt and cooler winter nights.
  • Barrocal and hills (Alte, Salir, Querença): winter may be colder and there are fewer neighbours around.

If the home is elsewhere in the municipality, say so in the request. The installer adapts the choice to the place.

A town of festivals and a market: old houses and noise

Loulé is known for its Carnival, the MED Festival and its processions, and the historic centre fills with people at those times. People who live there know that on festival days the street noise is loud.

In the centre’s old homes, windows tend to be worn and gaps let noise in. Double glazing, good sealing and a well-insulated shutter box reduce noise and cold. Ask the installer to check the state of the sill and the wall, and confirm with the town council whether the facade has rules.

General notes

My home is in Quarteira and a friend's is in Loulé town. Do we need the same window?

Not always. By the beach salt and sand matter; in town, distance from the sea eases that. The installer adapts the material to the area, and the finish on the hardware is where the difference shows most.

Is it colder in Alte or Salir?

Wikipedia describes mild, damp winters across the municipality. In the hills, away from the sea, nights tend to be colder. Windows that seal well help keep the warmth in, and double glazing cuts the water on the glass in the morning.

Can I change the windows of an old house in central Loulé?

In old buildings, check whether rules apply to the facade. Ask the town council and, if there is one, the residents' association. The installer helps check the state of the sill and the wall before the work.

The afternoon sun heats the living room a lot. What can I do?

West-facing windows catch sun until late. Shutters outside and glass with a solar coating cut the heat before it reaches the room. Light colours on the frame also help, because they heat up less.

I live in Almancil. Can I ask?

Yes. Write your town in the request. Almancil, Quarteira and Salir are some of the municipality's nine parishes. In Almancil, near the sea, hardware that can take salt is wise.

Is triple glazing worth it in Loulé?

In town and on the coast, winter is mild, and double usually does. In the hills, where nights are colder, triple can pay off. Ask the installer to explain the difference for your home.
