About Vila Nova de Famalicão
Vila Nova de Famalicão is in the Braga district, in the Ave area. The municipality has about 144 thousand residents in 202 km² and 34 parishes, and the city a little over 36 thousand. It borders Braga, Guimarães, Santo Tirso, Trofa, Vila do Conde, Póvoa de Varzim and Barcelos. The highest point in the municipality is Penedo das Letras, at 468 metres.
There are traces of very old settlement, such as the hill forts of Monte das Ermidas, São Miguel-o-Anjo and Eiras, where the Pedra Formosa was found in 1880. The town was born with the charter of King Sancho I, in 1205, who wanted to create settlements across the land.
The city is a hub of roads and railway lines linking Porto, Braga, Guimarães, Barcelos and Póvoa de Varzim, about half an hour from the airport and the port of Leixões. Museums tell the life of the municipality, such as the Textile Industry Museum, the National Railway Museum, in Lousado, and the Automobile Museum.
In São Miguel de Ceide stands the house where the writer Camilo Castelo Branco lived, built around 1830 by a man who had returned from Brazil. The Parque da Devesa, opened in 2012, is one of the most used green spaces in the city.
What the climate of Vila Nova de Famalicão asks of windows
Famalicão has a Csb climate, according to Wikipedia, between the coast and the hills of the Minho. Winters are rainy and cool and summers hot on sunny days. The city sits at the level of the Ave and Pelhe valleys, with hills around, and damp air settles on winter mornings. Since it is a road hub, noise counts as much as weather in choosing a window, and the window should seal well, insulate against cold and hold back noise.
Famalicão lies between hills and coast, in the middle of the roads of the north. It rains in winter and summer is hot.
The window here works twice: against the weather and against noise. Sealing and glass decide both.
- Wind and sideways rain
On stormy days rain drives sideways, especially on isolated houses on hills. Good gaskets and a well-made joint hold back water and air. In ground-floor homes, water running down the wall should also be diverted.
- Road noise and dust
Motorways and national roads make noise and dust, and the train passes in several places. Panes of different thickness and good gaskets help. Bedrooms facing the road need more care than those facing the garden.
- Rain and cold
Winters are rainy and cool, with damp-air mornings in the valleys. A good frame and insulating glass save on heating and prevent mould. In old houses, look at the wall beside the opening.
- Summer sun
Summer is hot on sunny days. South- and west-facing walls heat up; light colour and solar-treated glass help. In detached homes with little shade, external blinds are useful.

Homes in Vila Nova de Famalicão
The homes in the area change what is worth asking of the windows.
Detached and semi-detached houses
There are many detached homes with gardens, of different eras, spread across parishes such as Lousado, Ribeirão and Joane. Large windows call for good sealing and, on sunny facades, attention to heat. In isolated homes wind and rain hit the windows more.
Traditional houses
There are old houses tied to emigration, like those of people who returned from Brazil, with tall windows and thick walls, like Camilo's house in São Miguel de Ceide. Before replacing, check the state of the opening and the facade design. It helps to keep the window proportions.
New apartments
In town there are apartment blocks along the main roads, some near the motorway and the railway. Near roads, noise weighs on the choice of glass. On upper floors, wind and noise carry more.

Near the road junction
The city sits at a crossing of motorways, national roads and railway lines. If your home faces a busy road, expect noise and dust. It is worth raising this with the installer at the start, before deciding on glass.
Laminated glass or panes of different thickness and good gaskets help; an open ventilation grille also lets sound through.
Emigrants' houses and factory houses
Famalicão has many houses with a story: homes of emigrants who came back from Brazil, farmhouses and houses next to the old textile mills. Each type calls for a different window:
- Emigrants’ houses tend to have tall windows and ornate facades; keeping the design helps.
- Houses by the mills are simpler and lose heat through thin windows.
- Farmhouses have thick walls and small windows, which deserve a careful joint.
Tell the installer what kind of house it is and when it was built.
General notes
I live next to the motorway. Which window should I ask for?
One with glass designed for sound: panes of different thickness or laminated, and good gaskets. Tell the installer where the road is, so they choose accordingly. Do not forget ventilation: an open grille lets sound through.
Can I replace old wooden windows with PVC?
You can, but carefully. In an old house, measuring the opening well and checking the wall is essential. Also ask whether the facade needs permission, especially in houses with historic value.
Is double glazing worth it in a detached house with a garden?
In most cases yes: it cuts cold, noise and water on the glass. Ask for a comparison with triple if the house is very exposed. The installer should consider orientation and wind.
It rains sideways a lot. What matters most in the installation?
The joint between window and wall and the water exits. Good work here prevents leaks. Ask to see those points at the end of the job and, if possible, after a downpour.
I have a house that belonged to an emigrant. Can I change the windows?
You can, but it is worth keeping the original design, because these houses have their own proportions. The installer should propose windows that respect the facade. If the house has historic interest, talk to the council.
I live in a small parish, such as Calendário or Ceide. Can I ask?
Yes. Write the parish in the request. Installers who work in that area receive it. If you know where the noise comes from, say so too.
