About Barcelos

Barcelos is in the Minho, by the Cávado river. The municipality has about 117 thousand residents in 379 km² and 61 parishes, the most in the country, but only about 21 thousand live in the town. It borders Viana do Castelo, Ponte de Lima, Vila Verde, Braga, Vila Nova de Famalicão, Póvoa de Varzim and Esposende.

The place received its charter around 1177, from King Afonso Henriques, and was made a city in 1928. It was the seat of a county, and one of the counts was the Constable Nuno Álvares Pereira. The Porta Nova tower, the counts’ palace ruins and the main church are part of the old centre, and the town is known as the capital of crafts, with the Barcelos Rooster and the Pottery Museum.

The countryside weighs a lot in the economy: according to Wikipedia, Barcelos is the country’s biggest milk producer, and there is vinho verde and wine estates. The highest point is Monte de São Gonçalo, at 488 metres, and three river basins pass here, the Cávado, the Neiva and the Este.

With so many small settlements spread around, detached houses and country homes are very common, and life in the municipality runs along the roads. The town centre, by the river, keeps old houses and squares with market-day life.

What the climate of Barcelos asks of windows

Barcelos has the Atlantic climate of the Minho, with rain all year and mild winters. Between the Cávado, the Neiva and the coast the air is damp and, in the morning, there may be mist by the rivers. Because the municipality is large, more sea breeze reaches the parishes on the Esposende and Póvoa side, and more rain and cold the ones on the Braga side and in the hills. A window should hold back damp, water and cold.

Barcelos lives between the Cávado and the Minho hills. There is water everywhere: rain, rivers and damp air.

A well-sealed, well-insulated window keeps the home dry. The greatest care goes into the joints and the finish.

Section notes Sample text · to be reviewed
  1. Coastal breeze

From the sea side comes wind that drives rain, especially in parishes near Esposende. The fixing of the window and the gaskets make the difference. In isolated houses, wind hits the facades head on.

  2. River damp and mist

By the Cávado and the streams, the air is heavy in the morning. With cold glass, damp from inside turns to water; airing helps. Homes near the river need their own ventilation to avoid mould.

  3. Minho rain

It rains all year, and winter is damp. The joint between window and wall is the most common weak point. In farmhouses, also ask to see the state of the plaster.

  4. Summer sun

Summers are warm to hot. Light colours on the frame and solar-treated glass help on sunny facades. In country homes with little shade, external blinds are useful.

Wind and salt arrive from the water against the window. Indoors, damp air rises. The summer sun comes through the glass and warms the room.abcd

Homes in Barcelos

The homes in the area change what is worth asking of the windows.

  • Detached and semi-detached houses

There are many detached houses and country homes, with large windows and gardens. Rain and damp call for good sealing and a careful joint. In isolated houses, wind hits the windows head on and water runs down the walls.

  • Traditional houses

In the rural parishes there are still stone farmhouses, with thick walls and small windows. When replacing, check the state of the wall next to the opening. If the house is a family home, it is worth keeping the facade design.

  • Historic centre

In the town centre, near the counts' palace, the Porta Nova tower and the river, there are old houses. There may be rules for the facade: ask the council. Old streets tend to have facades pressed together, and market and traffic noise counts.

Small town, huge municipality

Barcelos covers 379 km² and has 61 parishes. The weather is not the same from end to end:

  • Near Esposende and Póvoa de Varzim: coastal breeze and damp air.
  • Next to Braga and the hills: more rain and more cold.
  • Near the Cávado: damp and morning mist.

Tell the installer which parish you live in, so they know the area.

Land of milk, vinho verde and pottery

Barcelos lives off the countryside and crafts. The country’s biggest milk producer is here, and there are vinho verde estates and pottery workshops. That leaves farm buildings, cellars and country homes scattered around:

  • In country homes, cold and damp from the stone weigh more than in a block.
  • Cellars and outbuildings converted to homes need well-insulated windows.
  • Houses next to estates catch more wind and sideways rain.

It is worth telling the installer what kind of building it is.

General notes

I live in a country house in the municipality. Does the window change?

Only a little, but the joint matters more. Isolated homes get more wind and rain. Ask for careful sealing and say the house is exposed. If there are trees or walls, mention that too.

How do I avoid damp on walls by a river?

Airing every day and having windows with ventilation helps lower damp in the air. If the damp comes from the wall, the window alone will not fix it; ask them to find the cause. A serious installer says what the window can and cannot do.

Which material for a home in Barcelos, PVC or aluminium?

Both work, with a good finish. PVC does not rot or need painting. Aluminium needs a thermal break so it does not feel cold. Compare the quotes and look at the hardware.

Can I replace only the north-facing windows?

You can, and many people start there, because they are the coldest. The installer explains what changes and whether it is worth doing everything at once. Design and colour should match, so the facade stays harmonious.

I have an old wine cellar converted into a home. Which windows should I choose?

Well-insulated, well-sealed windows, because these buildings tend to be cold and damp. The installer should look at the walls and the opening. If the cellar is stone, the joint matters as much as the glass.

I live in a parish far from the town. Can I ask?

Yes. Write the parish name in the request. It goes to installers who cover that area; JanelaCerta does not install. Since the municipality is large, give the village too.
