About Santa Maria da Feira
Santa Maria da Feira, also called Vila da Feira, lies in the Porto Metropolitan Area, about 23 km from the city of Porto, but belongs to the Aveiro district, in the Norte region. The municipality is the most populous in Entre Douro e Vouga, with about 137,000 people (2021), 213 km² and 21 parishes. It borders Vila Nova de Gaia and Gondomar to the north, Arouca to the east, Oliveira de Azeméis and São João da Madeira to the southeast, Ovar to the south and Espinho to the west.
The land sits at the crossing of the north-south and coast-inland routes. Roman roads linking Lisbon to Braga and Porto to Viseu passed through, and there are burial monuments, the mamoas, thousands of years old. The town was born around the castle, where a fair was already held in the early 12th century, and that gave it its name. In 1472 the town became the seat of a county.
Santa Maria da Feira was only made a city in 1985. Besides the seat, the municipality has the cities of Fiães and Lourosa and several towns, such as Argoncilhe, Arrifana, Canedo, Lobão, Mozelos, Rio Meão and São João de Ver. The population is widely spread, with about 20,000 residents in the town and over a hundred thousand in the rest of the municipality.
Transport is by metropolitan buses and the Vouga Line, with stops such as Vila da Feira and Paços de Brandão. The centre has the castle, Rua Direita, with 18th- and 19th-century buildings, and the Espírito Santo Convent. In Espargo is the Europarque, a congress centre.
What the climate of Santa Maria da Feira asks of windows
Wikipedia gives no climate data for Santa Maria da Feira, but the municipality lies on the northern coast side, a few kilometres from the Atlantic, south of Porto. In that region expect rainy, damp winters and mild summers, with few days of strong heat. Atlantic wind brings rain to west-facing facades, and damp air stays in poorly aired homes. For a window, sealing, water and insulation against damp cold count.
Santa Maria da Feira sits between Porto and Aveiro, with hills behind, to the east. Rain is frequent and winter is cool and damp. The municipality stretches across many parishes and scattered homes.
The window here works against water and damp cold. Summer heat matters less.
- Wind-driven rain
Rain carried by the Atlantic wind hits west-facing facades. Weak sealing lets water in through the joint with the wall or through the shutter box. In detached houses, which have more exposed walls, the effect is greater than in a flat.
- Little salt, a lot of water
The sea is a few kilometres away, but salt matters less than at the beach. Here rain is the bigger enemy: choose materials that will not rot or rust in water, and understand well how the window drains rain. Tracks and sills should be clean.
- Winter damp and cold
In winter the air is damp and cool. Walls get cold, the glass mists up and mould appears in the corners if the home is not aired. Double glazing and a window that seals well keep the inner pane less cold and cut water in the morning.
- Moderate summer sun
Summers are mild, and the sun heats mainly south- and west-facing rooms. Good glass and shutters are enough in many cases, without a strong solar coating. In very glazed rooms, it is worth asking the installer what pays off most.

| Condition | Level | Climate sheet |
|---|---|---|
| Rain | High | Rainy winters, as on the northern coast. |
| Humidity | High | Damp air, near the Atlantic. |
| Winter | Medium | Cool and damp. |
| Summer | Medium | Mild; few days of strong heat. |

Homes in Santa Maria da Feira
The homes in the area change what is worth asking of the windows.
Detached and semi-detached houses
The municipality is wide and spread out, with many houses and homes with yards, and most residents live outside the town. A house has more walls exposed to cold and rain than a flat, and windows weigh more in the heating bill.
New apartments
In the seat and in Fiães and Lourosa there are apartment blocks. Near busy roads and industrial areas, noise can matter, and double glazing and good sealing help. On low floors, damp and floor cold are felt more.
Historic centre
Around the castle and Rua Direita there are 18th- and 19th-century buildings. Ask the town council about facade rules. The installer should check the state of the sill and plaster, and the window design counts for keeping the look of the street.

A municipality of houses: where the home loses heat
Santa Maria da Feira is a wide municipality, with many detached homes or homes on small streets. In a house, heat escapes on more sides: roof, walls, floor and windows.
Before changing the windows, check:
- whether there are gaps between the frame and the wall;
- whether the shutter box is cold and lets air in;
- whether the home has ventilation, so damp air does not stay trapped;
- which rooms face west, where the rain comes from.
Changing only the windows helps, but wall and roof insulation counts too.
West-facing facades: Atlantic rain
The municipality lies between Porto and Aveiro, a few kilometres from the sea, with the Arouca hills to the east. In regions like this, Atlantic rain and wind arrive mostly from the west.
If your home’s main facade faces west, the windows on that side take more water and wind. Ask the installer to check:
- the sealing around the frame, outside;
- the sill and water drainage;
- the shutter box;
- the state of the plaster and wall next to the window.
On the opposite side of the house, the problem is usually smaller.
General notes
I live in a house in Santa Maria da Feira. Where do I lose most heat?
In detached homes heat escapes on several sides. Old windows and the shutter box are common points. The installer helps you see, and may suggest changing only the windows most exposed to wind and rain.
My home is damp and has mould. Do windows help?
They help keep the glass less cold, but ventilation counts too. Air daily and use the ventilation grille. If the wall has damp from infiltration, fix that cause first.
See the guide Why is there water on the glass?
Can I change the windows of a building near the castle?
It is a historic area: ask the town council about facade rules. In a block, speak to the residents' association too. The installer helps check the state of the sill and plaster before deciding.
I live in Fiães or Lourosa. Can I ask?
Yes. Write your town in the request. The municipality has 21 parishes, among them the cities of Fiães and Lourosa. Also say whether the home is a house or a flat, because what matters differs.
Double or triple glazing for a house in this area?
Double is enough in many homes. Triple can help in cold rooms or with a lot of road noise, but it is heavier. Ask the installer to explain the difference for your home.
See the guide Double or triple glazing.
Does road and industrial noise come through the window?
Old or poorly sealed windows let a lot of noise through, especially through the shutter box and gaps. Double glazing and good sealing reduce it. If noise is the main problem, tell the installer straight away.
