About Palmela

Palmela is a town on top of a hill, with the castle at 378 metres, visible from far away. The municipality is large, at 465 km² and 68,856 inhabitants in 2021, and has four parishes: Palmela, Pinhal Novo, Poceirão and Marateca, and Quinta do Anjo. The most populous town is Pinhal Novo, with almost 27,000 people.

From the castle you can see the whole Setúbal peninsula, Lisbon and the Atlantic. It was a strategic place for centuries and is still a junction of roads and railway lines. Palmela was taken by Afonso Henriques in 1147, lost in 1161 and recovered, and the Order of Santiago received it around 1172.

Human presence goes back to the Neolithic: the famous Palmela Vase comes from there, and the Chibanes hillfort is nearby. The municipality was only created in 1926, with land that belonged to Setúbal. It is wine country, with Palmela DOC and Moscatel de Setúbal, fruit country, such as the riscadinha apple, and home of Azeitão cheese, largely made at Quinta do Anjo.

There is also industry: the AutoEuropa plant opened in the 1990s and other companies settled in the municipality. Many people move to Palmela from bigger cities, such as Lisbon. Among a town on a hill, pine woods and open plain, a window in Palmela has to get along with hill wind, dust and inland heat.

What the climate of Palmela asks of windows

Wikipedia has no climate section for Palmela. The municipality is inland on the Setúbal peninsula, about 25 km from Lisbon, so the regional climate applies: Mediterranean, with hot, dry summers and mild winters. Away from the river and the sea, expect more heat in summer and colder nights in winter than by the estuary, and less salt in the air. On top of the castle hill, the wind tends to be stronger than on the plain.

Palmela lies inland on the Setúbal peninsula, with the castle on a hill. Summer is hot and dry, and winter nights get cold.

There is no sea spray here. What counts is wind up high, dust and heat. The drawing shows a house on top of the hill.

  1. Hill wind

The town stands on a 378-metre hill, with an open view over the Setúbal peninsula. Up high, the wind hits head-on and tends to be stronger than on the plain. Windows on the exposed side need good seals and firm latches, because that is where air and rain get in.

  2. Dry air and dust

Inland, away from the estuary, the air is drier. Dust from tracks, estates and pine woods settles on sills and gets in through the tracks. With sliding windows, clean the tracks often and check that the sealing brushes are in good condition.

  3. Cold winter nights

Away from the river, winter nights get colder, and an old frame loses heat quickly. A window with good insulation and double glazing keeps the room warmer and avoids a cold wall next to the window. In large houses, the home heats better.

  4. Hot summer sun

Summer is hot and dry, and the sun is strong. South- and west-facing openings heat up a lot, especially in houses with glass doors to the yard. Outside blinds and glass with a solar coating help, and a light frame colour heats up less than a dark one.

Wind and salt arrive from the water against the window. Indoors, damp air rises. The summer sun comes through the glass and warms the room.abcd

Homes in Palmela

The homes in the area change what is worth asking of the windows.

  • Historic centre

In Palmela town, around the castle and the old churches, the streets are old and sloping. Thick walls and old windows need a careful edge finish, and near the castle there may be facade rules. Ask Palmela town council before requesting quotes.

  • Detached and semi-detached houses

Outside the town, in Pinhal Novo, Quinta do Anjo and Poceirão, there are houses, estates and homes with land. There sun, cold nights and dust weigh more than salt. Ask for a solid latch and seals all round.

  • New apartments

In Pinhal Novo, the most populous town, there are apartment blocks and developments. Windows on high floors catch more summer sun and more winter cold, and road and railway noise may also count.

Houses on the castle hill

Up high, the wind is stronger and the view is open: from the castle you see the Setúbal peninsula, Lisbon and the Atlantic. Windows of hill homes catch driven rain and sun head-on. Ask for strong seals and a quality latch, and confirm the edge finish with the wall. In homes near the castle and the churches, before deciding the colour and design of the window, ask the council whether there are facade rules. Also ask whether the window can carry the weight of larger glass, if the view is wide.

Wine, estates and cold nights

Palmela is wine and estate country, and the Harvest Festival is one of the dates of the municipality. In homes surrounded by vineyards and pine woods, dust, sun and the cold of the nights are the issues. The windows of such homes tend to have large openings onto the land, which calls for good glass and outside sun protection. Ask the installer to look at the most exposed side and to explain how the tracks and the rubber seals are cleaned. After a dry summer, it is worth cleaning the tracks and the rubber seals well before winter.

General notes

I live on the castle hill in Palmela. Is wind a problem?

Up high, yes. Good seals and an installation without gaps make the difference, mostly on the exposed side. Also ask for latches at several points. If the wind whistles, it is almost always a gap in the rubber or the edge finish.

Summer here is very hot. What changes?

A light colour and glass with a solar coating help. Outside blinds are even better, because they stop the sun before the glass. For glass doors to the yard, sun protection is worth having. Ask the installer how much light the glass cuts.

Is winter cold in Palmela?

Nights get colder than by the river. Good insulation in the frame and glass avoids cold near the windows and a cold wall. In houses, well-installed double glazing is enough, and triple only in cases of great exposure.

Can I change windows in an old house in the town?

Near the castle and the churches there may be facade rules. Ask Palmela town council. In buildings with a residents' association, talk to the administration too. The installer should measure the openings on site.

Dust gets into the tracks of my sliding window. What to do?

Inland, dry air carries dust to the windows. Ask for tracks with good sealing brushes and clean them regularly. If the brushes are worn, replace them. A well-adjusted window lets in less dust.

I live in Pinhal Novo or Quinta do Anjo. Can I ask?

Yes. Write your parish in the request, so the contact goes to the right area. JanelaCerta does not install windows: it passes the request to installers in the area.
