About Montijo

Montijo lies on the south bank of the Tagus, opposite Lisbon, and has been a city since 1985. Until 1930 it was called Aldeia Galega do Ribatejo. In 2021 the municipality had 55,689 inhabitants, in 348.62 km², and the city 41,411.

It is one of the few municipalities in Portugal that are not contiguous. The main part, where the city is, is the smallest: 56.3 km², between the Tagus estuary, Alcochete, Palmela and Moita. The other part lies about 15 km to the east, next to Coruche, Montemor-o-Novo and Vendas Novas.

The history is tied to the river. In 1186 the lands were given to the Knights of the Order of Santiago, and the settlement grew with fishermen and salt workers, many from the Galician rías and the northern coast. The Chapel of São Sebastião dates from the 14th century and the Church of the Divine Holy Spirit from the 16th. In 1539 it split from Alcochete.

The Vasco da Gama bridge, opened in 1998, and the ferry link Montijo to Lisbon. The São Pedro festivities, honouring the patron of seafarers, are on 29 June. The municipality is known for bullfights, good food and fado, and has an old quay with a tide mill, the Fisherman’s Museum and the Atalaia Farming Museum.

What the climate of Montijo asks of windows

Wikipedia has no climate section for Montijo. The city is on the Tagus bank, with the estuary to the west, so the climate of the Lisbon and Setúbal peninsula region applies: Mediterranean, with hot, dry summers and mild winters. The estuary brings damp and some salt. The part of the municipality about 15 km to the east, further inland, should be drier and hotter in summer and colder on winter nights.

Montijo sits opposite Lisbon, on a wide, flat estuary. The wind runs unobstructed and the air is damp.

Salt is weak. Damp and sun without shade weigh more. The drawing shows a house near the quay.

Section notes Sample text · to be reviewed
  1. Estuary wind

The estuary is wide and flat, and the wind runs unobstructed between the Tagus and the Montijo bank. Near the quay and the riverside areas it is felt more. Badly sealed gaps whistle and let in cold on gusty days. Well-sealed windows and firm latches make the difference.

  2. Brackish estuary air

The salt is weak, but estuary air is not salt-free. Over the years it can stain cheap hardware and aluminium without a good finish. In homes by the quay and the tide mill, rinsing the window with fresh water now and then is a good habit.

  3. Damp by the quay

Near the quay and the river the air is damp, especially in the morning and at night. In cold corners and behind furniture pushed against facade walls, patches of mould appear. A window that insulates well and airing every day help, and shutter boxes should be in good condition.

  4. Sun without shade

The estuary plain gives little shade. In summer, south- and west-facing facades heat up, and strong light comes into rooms until the end of the afternoon. Outside blinds, light frames and glass with a solar coating reduce the heat.

Wind and salt arrive from the sea against the window. Indoors, damp air rises. The summer sun comes through the glass and warms the room.abcd

Near the quay, the installer should look at ventilation and hardware. The rest is confirmed on site.

Homes in Montijo

The homes in the area change what is worth asking of the windows.

  • Historic centre

The centre, near the Aldeia Galega quay and the Church of the Divine Holy Spirit, has old houses. A new window has to fit the old wall, and the installer should measure on site. Ask Montijo town council whether the facade has rules.

  • Detached and semi-detached houses

At Atalaia, in Canha and in other rural areas there are detached houses and estates, where wind and rain hit harder and the sun finds no shade. Reinforce seals and latches on the most exposed sides.

  • New apartments

In the city, in districts such as Afonsoeiro, Areias and Caneira, there may be more recent buildings. There river damp weighs less, and street noise and the heat of the facades weigh more.

A municipality in two parts

Montijo is one of the few Portuguese municipalities without territorial continuity. The main part is by the Tagus; the other, about 15 km to the east, is further inland, next to Coruche, Montemor-o-Novo and Vendas Novas. Conditions may change from one part to the other: by the river there is more damp and salt, inland you can expect more heat and cold nights. Give your parish in the request, so the installer knows which part of the municipality it is. If the home is in the inland part, also ask about sun protection, which weighs more than by the river.

Quay, tide mill and fishermen's houses

Montijo lived from fishermen and salt workers, and keeps the old quay, the Cais Tide Mill and the Fisherman’s Museum. In an old house by the quay, walls are thick and river air is damp. Ask the installer to check the state of the wall, the sill and the edge finish, and ask how damp is treated. A well-insulated new window reduces the cold, but the wall also needs to breathe. On cold, damp days, do not leave the window open long: airing briefly and with a through-draught is enough.

General notes

I live in central Montijo, near the quay. Is there a lot of damp?

Some, because of the river, especially in the morning and at night. Windows that insulate well and airing every day avoid water on the glass. Also check the state of the wall and the shutter box.

The road is noisy. Does the window help?

A well-sealed window with double glazing cuts part of the noise. Also check the shutter box and the edge with the wall, which let sound through too. Panes of two thicknesses help with low sounds.

I live on an estate near Atalaia. What changes?

In detached homes, wind and rain hit harder. Pay attention to the seals and the most exposed side. Ask for latches at several points. In summer, sun and dust get in more, so a good seal helps there too.

Does aluminium cope with estuary air?

It does, with a good finish and some cleaning. PVC does not rust and needs less maintenance. The hardware is metal in any case. A fresh-water rinse now and then is enough.

I live in the east, near Canha. Can I ask?

Yes. Give your parish in the request, because the two parts of the municipality are far apart, about 15 km. JanelaCerta does not install windows: it passes the request to installers in the area. The climate there may be drier and hotter.

Is triple glazing needed in Montijo?

Usually not. Winters are mild and good double glazing, well installed, suits most homes. Triple may make sense in a detached, cold house. Ask the installer for an opinion.
