About Barreiro

Barreiro lies on the south bank of the Tagus, about 6 km from central Lisbon as the crow flies. In 2021 it had 78,359 inhabitants in 36.39 km². It borders Moita, Palmela, Setúbal, Sesimbra and Seixal, and has the Tagus to the north. From Avenida da Praia you can see Lisbon across the water.

It began as a village of fishermen and salt workers, resettled by the Order of Santiago. At Vale de Zebro there were biscuit ovens for the ships, and tide mills worked on the creeks. In 1521 it became a town.

In the 19th century the railway arrived from Setúbal and Vendas Novas, and CUF chose Barreiro for one of the largest industrial estates in the country. Thousands of workers came from all over, many from the Alentejo. After 1974 the factories closed one by one, and Barreiro took in many refugees from Angola.

It became a city in 1984. It now has four parishes: Alto do Seixalinho, Santo André and Verderena; Barreiro and Lavradio; Palhais and Coina; and Santo António da Charneca. It is a city of working-class districts, of big clubs such as Barreirense and CUF, and of a terminal where you catch the ferry and the train.

What the climate of Barreiro asks of windows

Wikipedia has no climate section for Barreiro. The city is by the Tagus, a few kilometres from Lisbon, so the regional climate applies: Mediterranean, with hot, dry summers and mild, damp winters. The river and the creeks, which have always given the town its salt and fishing, bring damp air on cold mornings and nights. With no slopes to slow the wind, estuary air reaches the city.

Barreiro sits by the Tagus and its creeks, a few kilometres from Lisbon. River air brings damp, more than salt.

Many homes date from the industrial era, with old frames and cold walls. The drawing shows a neighbourhood house by the river.

Section notes Sample text · to be reviewed
  1. Tagus and creek air

Air arrives from the estuary and the creeks, such as the Coina river, and the city is flat, with no slopes to stop it. Near Avenida da Praia and the waterfront, the wind is felt more. On inner streets, among blocks, it is weaker. A well-sealed window prevents whistling and draughts.

  2. Mild river salt

Barreiro was born of salt and fishing, but today the air of the river and the creeks has little salt. It is still enough to stain poorly treated metals and cheap hardware. Prefer quality finishes and a simple fresh-water rinse, especially in homes by the water.

  3. River damp and cold

Near the water, winter nights are damp, and in old neighbourhood houses warm air in the room condenses on cold walls and glass. Drops, stains and mould appear in the corners. Windows with good insulation help, but the sill and the wall around them count too.

  4. Strong summer sun

In summer the sun hits south- and west-facing facades hard, and on flat, lightly treed streets the houses heat up a lot. Outside blinds and a light colour on the frame reduce the heat coming in. On the high floors of blocks, the effect is felt more at night.

In old neighbourhood houses, ask the installer to check the sill and the wall. The rest is confirmed on site.

Homes in Barreiro

The homes in the area change what is worth asking of the windows.

  • Older apartment blocks

In the districts that grew with CUF and the railway there are many working-class buildings and houses several decades old. Worn frames, damp walls and degraded sills can be common. Ask for a visit before the final price and a proposal that includes the edge finish.

  • Historic centre

The centre of Barreiro and Lavradio have old streets near the river and the station. The older houses have thick walls and irregular openings. Ask Barreiro town council whether the facade has rules and ask for measurements on site.

  • New apartments

In more recent areas, such as Palhais, Coina and Santo António da Charneca, there may be newer houses and blocks. There the windows are less old, but damp river air and summer sun still weigh. Ask how ventilation is done.

Former industrial districts

Barreiro grew as a working-class city, with thousands of people arriving to work at CUF and on the railway. Many districts from that time have thick walls and very old windows. Before closing the job, ask the installer to check the state of the wall and the sill and to explain how the edge finish will be done. In a neighbourhood house, a well-insulated new window can change the feeling of cold and damp in the bedroom, but only with the wall in good condition. It is also worth asking whether the quote includes repairing the plaster around the window, which often ends up damaged.

The river, the terminal and noise

Near the ferry and rail terminal, by the station and the river, there is more movement. People living on nearby streets notice noise from trains, buses and boats at certain times of day. Ask the installer to listen to the surroundings and ask where the noise comes from. A well-sealed window, with double glazing, cuts a lot of sound; the shutter box and the edge with the wall must also be in good condition. The best moment to listen is in the late afternoon, when more people are travelling.

General notes

Is there a lot of damp by the river in Barreiro?

Yes, especially on winter nights and near the creeks. Windows that insulate well help. Airing every day, even briefly, avoids water on the glass and mould. In old houses, treat the wall too.

I have an old house in an industrial district. Is it worth changing the windows?

Often yes, if the frame already lets in air and water. Ask the installer to check the wall and the sill too. In an old house the edge finish is the hardest part. Ask for a written proposal.

Does river air damage aluminium windows?

The salt is mild, but it can stain aluminium without a good finish. PVC does not rust. Hardware is metal and needs some cleaning. A fresh-water rinse now and then is enough.

Can I change the windows in a block in central Barreiro?

Ask the building administration and Barreiro town council. The facade may have rules. If so, ask for the answer in writing. Only then ask for quotes.

The train and the ferry are noisy. Which window helps?

A window sealed all round with double glazing cuts a lot of noise. Panes of two thicknesses help with low sounds. Check the shutter box too. Ask the installer to listen to the place at the noisiest times.

I live in Lavradio or Coina. Can I ask?

Yes. Write your parish in the request, so the contact goes to the right area. JanelaCerta does not install windows: it passes the request to installers in the area.
