About Matosinhos

Matosinhos is on the Atlantic coast, north of Porto, and is part of the so-called Atlantic Front of Porto, with Porto and Gaia. The municipality has about 173 thousand residents in 62 km², borders Maia, Porto and Vila do Conde, and includes three cities: Matosinhos, São Mamede de Infesta and Senhora da Hora.

The place is old: as early as the year 900 there was a small settlement called Matesinus, tied to the Bouças monastery, and its charter dates from 1514. It was made a city in 1984. The big festival is that of the Senhor de Matosinhos, tied to a legend in which an image of Jesus appeared by the sea, and the Bom Jesus church is a Baroque work by Nicolau Nasoni.

The port of Leixões, built at the end of the 19th century, is the largest artificial port in the country. The city had a lot of industry, with petrochemicals, canning and textiles, and today lives more on services. In Leça da Palmeira stands Exponor, the country’s largest trade-fair ground, and Wikipedia recalls a strong tradition of fishing and architecture: Álvaro Siza Vieira was born here.

Part of Porto airport lies inside the municipal boundary, and Wikipedia mentions surfing and sailing. People in Matosinhos live with the sea, the port, the noise of planes and roads and, inland, with calmer districts such as Senhora da Hora.

What the climate of Matosinhos asks of windows

Matosinhos sits on the Atlantic edge, in the same maritime-influenced climate as Porto. Winters are rainy, summers are mild and sea wind hits sea-facing facades head on. Salt travels with it and settles on metal. On top of this come the noise of the port of Leixões, the airport and the roads, which on some streets weighs as much as the weather.

Matosinhos has the ocean at the door and the port next door. Sea wind brings rain and salt, and the city brings noise.

A well-chosen, well-fitted window copes with it all. The secret is in the seal, the finish and the glass.

  1. Coastal wind

On sea-facing facades, along the seafront, the wind hits head on. Good sealing and good fixing keep air and rain outside. On stormy days, poorly sealed windows whistle and let water in at the corners.

  2. Salt air and port noise

Salt attacks weak hardware, and noise from the port of Leixões, the roads and the planes carries far. Ask for a marine finish and glass that insulates sound. On streets near the avenue, noise weighs as much as salt.

  3. Rain and damp air

In winter it rains a lot and sea air is damp. Indoors, water shows on the glass and mould, if the home is not aired. Windows with their own ventilation and good seals help the home dry out.

  4. Afternoon sun

If your home faces west, it gets direct sun late in the day, with sea glare adding to the light. Solar-treated glass and a light frame colour help keep the living room cool in summer.

Homes in Matosinhos

The homes in the area change what is worth asking of the windows.

  • New apartments

Along the seafront and near Leça da Palmeira there are many tall buildings with balconies facing the sea. The wind is constant there: look for sturdy frames, hardware for salty air and glass that cuts noise. On upper floors, pay special attention to the fixing.

  • Traditional houses

In the older streets, near Bom Jesus and the centre of Matosinhos, a few low houses remain with tired frames. That is where damp air gets in, and the wall around also suffers from the salt air. Before replacing, the installer should look at the state of the plaster and the opening.

  • Detached and semi-detached houses

In Senhora da Hora, Custóias, Guifões or São Mamede de Infesta there are detached homes and blocks of different eras, on streets further from the sea. Every house has its own story, so the opening must be seen on site. The wind is less, but road noise still counts.

Leixões port and the airport

Matosinhos has the Leixões port and part of Porto airport in its territory. People living nearby may hear more noise. In that case:

  • Ask for glass with good sound insulation, for example mixed panes or laminated.
  • Pay attention to the gaskets and the joint to the wall.
  • Remember that an open ventilation grille also lets sound through.

Tell the installer where the noise comes from and what time of day it bothers you most.

A town of fish, canning and sea

Matosinhos is known for fish, canning and port life. If you live near the beach and the restaurants, you are very close to the sea, and salt air gets into everything:

  • Handles and hinges need a marine-grade finish.
  • Glass gets salty and needs washing with fresh water.
  • A window with trickle ventilation helps the home lose kitchen smells without opening everything to the wind.

Ask the installer which hardware is included in the quote.

General notes

Near Leixões port or the airport, does replacing windows reduce noise?

It does, but only if the set is designed for it. Glass, gaskets and the fit in the wall all count. Explain what your noise is: lorries, planes or cars. A window with plain glass and good gaskets alone is not enough with an airport overhead.

Does rain with strong wind get in through the windows?

In a carefully fitted window very little water gets in. When it does, the cause is usually worn gaskets or a badly sealed joint. It is worth checking both at the end of the job. On very exposed facades, also ask for the water exits to be checked.

Which material resists seafront salt best?

None is immune without care. PVC does not rust, and aluminium needs a good coating and washing. Compare quotes with both and see which hardware is included. Hardware is often the weakest point.

Is double glazing enough in a seaside apartment?

In many cases it is plenty. Triple insulates more, but is heavier and costs more. Best to compare on site, with your orientation and your noise. On a high, windy floor, the installer should confirm the weight the hardware can carry.

Can I replace windows in an old house near Bom Jesus?

You can, but talk to the city council if the area has facade rules. In an old house, the installer should look at the state of the wall around the opening. A good replacement respects the look of the house and improves comfort.

I live in Leça da Palmeira, Senhora da Hora or São Mamede de Infesta. Can I ask?

Yes, in any parish of the municipality. Say where you live and the request goes to those working in that area. JanelaCerta does not install windows. If you know where the noise or wind comes from, say so too.
