About Tavira
Tavira lies in the Sotavento, the eastern Algarve, about 28 km from Faro. The municipality has about 27,000 inhabitants (2021), six parishes and over 600 km². It borders Olhão, Loulé, São Brás de Alportel, Castro Marim, Vila Real de Santo António and Alcoutim. The town has about 14,000 inhabitants and is one of those belonging to the Cittaslow network.
The Gilão river runs through the town and meets the sea beside the Ria Formosa, which covers the whole coast of the municipality. Between the lagoon and the sea are two sand bars, Tavira Island and Cabanas Island, where beach tourism is. The lagoon’s salt pans and marshes attract birds, and the Mediterranean Diet, recognised by UNESCO, has in Tavira the community that represents Portugal.
The place has very old origins, with the Phoenicians, and the Arab period left white houses, Moorish-style doors and characteristic rooftops. In the 18th century the river port was used to ship salt, dried fish and wine. The 1755 earthquake destroyed almost all buildings, and the town was rebuilt, with many 18th-century buildings and 37 churches, according to Wikipedia. A bridge links the two banks of the Gilão.
The municipality has the three landscapes of the Algarve clearly marked: the flat coast, the barrocal and the hills, with peaks above 500 metres. Tuna fishing lost importance over time, and today life is made of services, farming and tourism.
What the climate of Tavira asks of windows
Tavira has hot, dry summers and a rainy winter, with an annual mean near 18 degrees, according to Wikipedia. In August highs are around 30 degrees, and in January highs about 16 and lows 7. About 576 mm of rain falls a year, from October to April, and there are five dry months, from May to September. The hills block cold northerly winds, and fog hardly ever appears. For a window, heavy rain and sun weigh, and cold hardly at all.
Tavira sits between the lagoon and the hills, in the sunniest corner of the Algarve. It rains little over the year, but the rain comes in heavy showers. The Gilão river runs through the middle of town.
The window here has to withstand wind-driven rain and a lot of sun, with almost no cold.
- Westerly winds
According to Wikipedia, westerly winds prevail. With rain, water is pushed against windows on that side. The hills protect Tavira from cold northerly winds, so winter cold is seldom the problem.
- Lagoon salt and sand
The Ria Formosa covers the whole coast of the municipality. Near it there is salt and sand in the air, and the salt pans are part of the landscape. The tracks of sliding windows fill with sand, and metal hardware feels the salt. Clean them with fresh water now and then.
- Showers and damp southern air
In autumn and winter there are short spells of intense rain and thunder, and damp air arrives from the south. Weak sealing lets water in through the joint with the wall. After a heavy shower, it is worth looking at the ceiling and the sills.
- One of the sunniest towns
Wikipedia puts Tavira among the sunniest cities in Europe, with close to 3,150 hours a year. South- and west-facing rooms heat up a lot, and the heat is felt more on upper floors. Shutters outside and glass with a solar coating are the precautions that pay off most.

Homes in Tavira
The homes in the area change what is worth asking of the windows.
Historic centre
The old centre, by the river, has low white houses with old tiled roofs and Arab-style doors. In protected areas, changing the window may need a council licence. The design and colour of the window weigh most in the decision.
Traditional houses
In the villages of the foothills and hills there are often thick-walled houses. They are cool in summer, but old windows let in cold and damp. Check the state of the wall beside it before replacing, and ask the installer to protect the plaster well.
Detached and semi-detached houses
By the lagoon, in Cabanas and other areas, there are houses and beach homes, with salt and sand in the air. Some are used only in summer. Sliding doors to the terrace are common and call for good sealing and clean tracks.

After the shower: what to check
Tavira gets rain on about 65 days a year, according to Wikipedia, often in short, heavy showers with thunder in autumn.
After a downpour, look for:
- stains on the ceiling or wall beside the window;
- standing water in the tracks;
- the shutter box, which water can also enter through;
- the outside sill, which should throw water away from the wall.
If you see any sign, photograph it and show the installer.
A town of rooftops and white houses
Tavira keeps white houses, Arab-style doors and characteristic rooftops, a legacy of the Arab period, and many buildings rebuilt in the 18th century after the 1755 earthquake. Seen from above, the town is a sea of roofs.
In homes like these, the window is part of the picture of the street. Before changing, ask the town council about facade rules, check whether the old frame can be repaired and choose a discreet colour. A window with good glass and good sealing can keep the look of the house and improve comfort a lot.
General notes
Are fog and frost a problem in Tavira?
Hardly. According to Wikipedia, fog is rare and the temperature drops below zero about once a year. Sun and heavy rain matter more. That means the extra insulation of triple glazing is rarely needed.
After a shower, stains appeared on the ceiling by the window. Why?
It may be water entering through the joint with the wall or through the shutter box. Ask the installer to check the sealing and the sill. Show photos of the stains, with dates, so they can work out where the water gets in.
Can I change the windows of an old house by the Gilão?
In old areas there may be rules for the facade. Ask the town council; Tavira belongs to the Cittaslow network and values its heritage. If it is a block, speak to the residents' association too.
I live in Cabanas or in the hills. Can I ask?
Yes. Write your town in the request. The municipality has six parishes and runs from the beach to the hills. Near the lagoon salt and sand count; in the hills, averages are lower and nights cooler.
Is triple glazing worth it in Tavira?
Winter is mild and hard cold is rare, so double usually does. In the hills, with lower averages, triple can help. If the home is for summer only, it rarely pays off.
Does the Tavira sun damage curtains and furniture by the window?
With over 3,000 hours of sun a year, the sun fades fabrics, wood and floors beside the glass. Glass with a solar coating and shutters outside cut the strongest light and heat. For very exposed spots, ask the installer to explain the options.
