About Sines
Sines lies in the Alentejo coast, in the Setúbal district, about 150 km from Lisbon. The municipality has about 15,000 inhabitants, two parishes, Sines and Porto Covo, and 203 km². It borders Santiago do Cacém to the north and east and Odemira to the south, and has Atlantic coast, with a sandy part to the north and a cliff part to the south.
Sines bay was already a port in Roman times, with fish-salting works. It was land of the Order of Santiago and received its town charter in 1362. Porto Covo was founded at the end of the 18th century. Until the 20th century life revolved around fishing, cork and farming, and the municipality only became independent again in 1914.
In 1970 the great industrial complex arrived, and the population grew and changed. The deep-water port, in operation since 1978, now handles more than half of the traffic of Portuguese ports, mostly containers, according to Wikipedia. There is also a refinery and petrochemical industry, and Sines has the highest GDP per person in the country.
The old town, with its castle, keeps narrow streets and low houses. In the municipality, south of São Torpes, the coast is part of the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park, with beaches and the Pessegueiro island.
What the climate of Sines asks of windows
Sines has a Mediterranean climate with mild summers and winters, strongly shaped by the ocean. According to Wikipedia, temperatures stay almost always between 10 and 25 degrees, thanks to cold-water upwelling on the coast. Days above 30 degrees are very rare and days below zero practically do not exist. Summer is dry and autumn relatively rainy, and there are close to 3,000 hours of sun a year. For a window, that means little thermal demand and more attention to wind, dust and water.
Sines stands on a stretch of coast open to the Atlantic, with port and industry to the north. Summers and winters are mild, with no great heat or frost. The sea brings wind, salt and damp.
The window here deals with wind, sea air, industrial dust and autumn rain, more than with the sun.
- Atlantic wind
The coast is open to the Atlantic and wind arrives with no obstacle, especially on higher houses and at the foot of the cliffs. Well-fixed windows, with good hardware and seals, make a difference, and a whistle almost always shows a gap. On sheltered streets of the old town, wind weighs less.
- Sea air and dust
Salt comes from the sea and, near the industrial zone and the port roads, dust and dirt can add to it. Glass and tracks get dirty faster. Clean them more often and ask for frames and hardware that stand up to salt and dirt without spoiling.
- Rainy autumn, dry summer
Summer is dry, but autumn is rainy, according to Wikipedia. After months of dryness, the first heavy rain exposes sealing flaws. Water must drain well through tracks and sills, and the home must be aired so it does not hold the damp of the marine air.
- Sun without excessive heat
There are close to 3,000 hours of sun, but summers are mild and days above 30 degrees are rare. The sun weighs less than in the Algarve, and light is welcome in winter. Even so, south- and west-facing windows with suitable glass avoid an overly hot room on hot days.

| Condition | Level | Climate sheet |
|---|---|---|

| Rain | Medium | Dry summer; rainier autumn. |
| Sun | High | Close to 3,000 hours of sun a year. |
| Wind | Medium | Coast open to the Atlantic. |
| Humidity | Medium | Maritime air, with no great heat to dry it. |

Homes in Sines
The homes in the area change what is worth asking of the windows.
Traditional houses
The old town, next to the castle, has low whitewashed houses, many with small windows, and narrow streets. Ask the town council about rules before touching the facade. In old houses, check the state of the plaster and sill, where sea damp settles.
New apartments
The town grew with the port and industry, and has newer apartment blocks. Near the port service roads, noise and dust can matter. Double glazing, good sealing and well-insulated shutter boxes help.
Detached and semi-detached houses
In Porto Covo and by the sea there are houses and holiday homes, more exposed to wind and salt. Some are used only in summer and stay shut for months. Ventilation and regular cleaning of the tracks make the window last longer.
Local notes
Near the port, the industrial zone and the roads linking them, there may be more noise and more dust on the glass. Double glazing, good sealing and regular cleaning help. With the window open, the noise gets in anyway.

A home near the port and industry
Sines has a large port and heavy industry, with a refinery and petrochemicals, according to Wikipedia. If your home is close, there may be more dust and more noise.
Four precautions:
- clean glass and tracks more often;
- seal the window well, so less dust and noise get in;
- choose double glazing to lower the noise;
- close the window in busier periods, if it bothers you.
Ask the installer to see the home on site, ideally the windows facing the industrial zone.
Porto Covo and the Vicentine Coast
Porto Covo was founded at the end of the 18th century and is now the municipality’s parish most turned towards tourism. South of São Torpes, the coast is part of the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park, with cliffs, beaches and the Pessegueiro island.
In homes there, wind, salt and sand weigh more than in town. Windows often face the sea, and some homes are used only in summer. Prefer hardware for marine settings, easy-to-clean seals and ventilation that works with the home closed.
General notes
I live near the port of Sines. Do dust and noise get in?
They can get in through poorly sealed windows. Good sealing and double glazing reduce both. Clean the glass and tracks regularly, and ask the installer to check the shutter box, which noise also passes through.
Is Sines hot in summer?
Less than inland or the Algarve. Wikipedia says days above 30 degrees are very rare. The window matters more for wind and damp, and double glazing is usually enough without a strong solar coating.
I live in Porto Covo. Can I ask?
Yes. Write your town in the request. The municipality has two parishes: Sines and Porto Covo. In Porto Covo, near the sea, salt and wind weigh more.
Does sea salt damage aluminium windows?
Without a good finish, salt can attack aluminium. PVC does not rust. Rinse windows with fresh water now and then, and watch hinges and handles.
Can I change the windows of an old house in the old town?
In historic areas there may be rules for the facade. Ask the town council. The installer also helps check the state of the wall, where sea damp tends to build up.
Is triple glazing worth it in Sines?
In such a mild climate, double usually does. Triple can help against port noise in very exposed homes, but it is heavier and rarely pays off for cold alone.
