About Lagos

Lagos lies in the Barlavento, the western Algarve, at the mouth of the Bensafrim river, beside the Atlantic. The municipality has about 33,000 inhabitants (2021) and borders Portimão to the east, Vila do Bispo to the west, Aljezur to the northwest and Monchique to the northeast. The coast is densely populated, and the interior is sparsely inhabited, with farming and forest.

The city weighs heavily in the history of the Age of Discovery. The fleet for Ceuta set sail from here in 1415, and Prince Henry spent time here. It became a city in 1573 and, between 1576 and 1755, was capital of the Algarve, until the 1755 earthquake and tsunami largely destroyed it. Today stretches of the walls remain, and the Governors’ Castle.

In the 19th century, Lagos was a fish-canning centre. Since the 1960s tourism has been the main activity, with beaches such as Meia Praia, one of the largest open bays in Europe, and the golden rocks of Ponta da Piedade. According to Wikipedia, most of the population lives outside the historic centre, which is almost entirely pedestrian.

The municipality has been a Cittaslow since 2012, meaning care for heritage and limits on building height. It has four parishes: Bensafrim e Barão de São João, São Gonçalo de Lagos, Luz and Odiáxere.

What the climate of Lagos asks of windows

Lagos has a Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry and generally calm summers and mild but damp winters. According to Wikipedia, sun exceeds 3,100 hours a year. In winter highs are around 16 to 17 degrees and lows 8 to 9, wind averages 14 km/h and humidity 80%. In summer the sea breeze eases the heat. The window must seal well for winter and stop the sun in summer.

Lagos lives between the Bensafrim river and cliffs of golden stone. In summer the air hardly moves, and in winter wind and damp arrive. The sun shines more than 3,100 hours a year.

A window here has to work in both seasons: stop the sun and stand up to damp winter air.

  1. Winter wind, summer calm

    In summer the air hardly stirs, and the sea breeze only eases the heat. It is in winter that wind is more frequent, and an old window lets in cold air and makes the home whistle. In homes on the cliffs, the wind is felt more strongly.

  2. Sea air from the coast

    The Lagos coast is made of cliffs and beaches, and salt reaches windows and hardware. Over time it leaves stains and wears less protected hinges. Clean handles and frames with fresh water now and then, especially in Luz and by Meia Praia.

  3. Winter damp

    According to Wikipedia, in winter humidity is around 80%. With cold glass, the damp from inside the home turns to water and runs down the frame, and mould appears behind furniture and curtains. Airing in the morning and having windows that seal well makes a big difference.

  4. Over 3,100 hours of sun

    With so much sun, south-facing rooms heat up a lot even on cool days. Glass with a solar coating and shutters outside hold back the heat without cutting the light. In homes with glass doors facing the sea, the afternoon sun can be strong.

Wind and salt arrive from the sea against the window. Indoors, damp air rises. The summer sun comes through the glass and warms the room.abcd

In Lagos the damp winter counts as much as the summer sun. The installer checks everything on site.

Homes in Lagos

The homes in the area change what is worth asking of the windows.

  • Historic centre

    The centre, almost all pedestrian, has old houses, some with tiled facades, and stretches of wall. Walls are thick and windows have their own shapes. Touching the facade calls for a word with the town council, and it helps to agree with the installer how the window reaches the house through narrow streets.

  • New apartments

    Because Lagos belongs to the Cittaslow network, which limits building height, new blocks tend to be low, with few storeys. Many are holiday flats. Near the sea salt and sun count, and on low floors the sealing of balcony doors.

  • Detached and semi-detached houses

    In Luz and other areas there are houses and estates facing the sea. For homes beside the cliffs, salt and wind matter, and many have large windows and sliding doors to the terrace. Inland, away from the coast, there are more isolated country homes.

Local notes

Noise

Lagos has a lively nightlife, according to Wikipedia. Near streets with bars, double glazing and good sealing help you sleep with the window shut. With the window open, the noise gets in anyway.

Damp and windy winters

In Lagos summer is calm. It is in winter that wind and damp are felt, with about 14 km/h of wind and 80% humidity, according to Wikipedia.

People who live here all year notice:

  • cold corners with mould, behind furniture and curtains;
  • cold air coming through old frames;
  • misted glass in the morning;
  • laundry that takes days to dry indoors.

A well-sealed window, with double glazing, and a few minutes of ventilation a day do more than switching on the heating.

Pedestrian historic centre: what to ask

The centre of Lagos is almost all pedestrian, with walls, narrow streets and old houses. That changes the job of replacing a window.

Before asking for quotes, check:

  • whether the street lets the window and tools reach the front door;
  • whether the facade has rules, by asking the town council;
  • whether the current window has a shutter box or grille;
  • the state of the thick walls around, where damp tends to gather.

The installer can see all this on site, ideally with photos sent beforehand.

General notes

Why do I have mould at home in Lagos, when it is sunny here?

Winter is damp and cold glass condenses the damp from inside. Airing in the morning, even when cold, and having windows that seal well helps. Furniture against outer walls makes it worse.

See the guide Why is there water on the glass?

Can I change the windows in the historic centre?

It is an old, almost entirely pedestrian area. Ask the town council first: the municipality wants to protect its heritage, and there may be rules for colour and design. If it is a block, speak to the residents' association too.

Does the winter wind make windows whistle?

Old or poorly sealed windows whistle. Change the seals or the window; installation counts as much as the material. Ask the installer to check for gaps between the frame and the wall.

I live in Luz or Odiáxere. Can I ask?

Yes. The municipality has four parishes: Bensafrim e Barão de São João, São Gonçalo de Lagos, Luz and Odiáxere. On the coast, in Luz, salt matters more; in Odiáxere and inland, sun and night cold count more.

Is triple glazing worth it in Lagos?

Winter is mild, so double is often enough. Triple helps in very cold or noisy homes and in homes of people who live here all year. For a holiday home used in summer, it rarely pays off.

Do the sea breeze and the sand at Meia Praia damage windows?

Over time they wear tracks and hardware, if nobody cleans them. PVC does not rust; with aluminium, the finish counts. A rinse with fresh water now and then, and well-treated handles, are enough in many cases.
