About Gondomar

Gondomar lies east of Porto, beside the Douro river. The municipality has about 164 thousand residents in 132 km² and seven parishes, among them Rio Tinto, Fânzeres and São Pedro da Cova, Lomba, Melres and Medas, and Foz do Sousa and Covelo. It borders Porto, Gaia, Valongo, Paredes, Penafiel, Castelo de Paiva and other municipalities.

Wikipedia recalls old ties to the land: the Romans mined gold in the region, and Gondomar received its first charter in 1193, from King Sancho I. For a long time the São Pedro da Cova coal mine shaped life in one of the parishes, and some mining buildings remain.

The Douro runs along about 37 km of the municipality, and the Tinto, Torto, Sousa and Ferreira rivers also pass through. On the bank are the river beaches of Lomba, Zebreiros, Melres and Marecos. Shad and lamprey are emblematic dishes, and goldsmithing and filigree are the great art of the place.

Monte Crasto, at 194 metres, is the town’s lookout. Gondomar shares with Valongo and Paredes the Porto Hills Park, about 6 thousand hectares across the Santa Justa, Pias, Castiçal, Flores, Santa Iria and Banjas hills. The municipality has metro, train and buses, and several roads link it to Porto.

What the climate of Gondomar asks of windows

Gondomar has an Atlantic climate, but already further from the sea than Porto. It rains in winter, the Douro valley can get hotter than the coast in summer, and the hills of the Porto Hills Park bring more rain and coolness at height. There is no single source for the municipality's climate, so expect large differences between valley and hills. A window should cope with rain, some cold on the slopes and heat in the valley.

Gondomar sits between the Douro river and the hills. The sea is no longer at the door, but rain and damp arrive all the same.

A good window copes with valley heat in summer and slope cold in winter. It all comes down to the seal and the glass.

Section notes Sample text · to be reviewed
  1. Douro valley air

The valley is more sheltered than the coast, but air rising from the river brings damp. On the slopes of Melres and Foz do Sousa, rain drives sideways when the wind blows from the river. A well-sealed window lets very little air and water through.

  2. Dust and building work

Near the municipality's roads and building sites, dust gets in through gaps. Good gaskets and a simple clean of the tracks keep the window working. For homes near the hills, dust from dirt roads counts too.

  3. Rain in the hills

The slopes of Santa Justa, Pias and Banjas get more rain than the valley. The joint to the wall and the window drainage must be done well. Homes at the foot of the slopes also catch the water running down.

  4. Sun in the valley

In summer, the Douro valley can get quite hot and detached homes with south-facing facades suffer. Light colours and solar-treated glass help keep the home cool. It is worth asking the installer for the solar factor of the proposed glass.

Wind and salt arrive from the water against the window. Indoors, damp air rises. The summer sun comes through the glass and warms the room.abcd

Homes in Gondomar

The homes in the area change what is worth asking of the windows.

  • Traditional houses

In the villages of the Douro and the hills there are stone houses with thick walls and small windows. When replacing, check the state of the stone and plaster around the opening. The installer should judge whether the wall can carry a new window without creating cold and damp bridges in the corners.

  • Detached and semi-detached houses

In the more populated parishes, such as Valbom, Jovim and Fânzeres, there are many detached homes with large windows, often facing the valley. Summer sun weighs on these facades and so does the cold of winter nights. Ask for quotes that compare double and triple glazing.

  • New apartments

In urban areas such as Rio Tinto and in the town of Gondomar there are apartment blocks of different ages, near roads and the metro. Noise counts in the choice of glass. On high floors, check the hardware, because valley wind also bites.

From the river to the hills

Gondomar has river beaches on the Douro, such as Lomba, Zebreiros, Melres and Marecos, and hills with rain and cold. The weather changes with height:

  • Near the river: more summer heat and damp.
  • In the hills: more rain and colder nights.
  • In urban parishes: city noise.

Tell the installer where the house is and at what height.

Stone houses, gold and miners

Gondomar’s history has gold, filigree and coal. The oldest houses, many of them stone, were built by people who lived off the land, the river or the mines. That left sturdy houses with thick walls:

  • In stone houses, the new window must be well sealed to the granite or schist.
  • In miners’ and village houses, windows tend to be small; if you enlarge the opening, ask for advice on the structure.
  • Before any work, check whether the house is in an area with facade rules.

Do not guess: ask the installer to see the opening before quoting.

General notes

Do windows cope with Douro valley heat in summer?

They do, but the home can heat up through the glass. Light colours and solar-treated glass help. Ask the installer what suits your home's orientation. External blinds also help stop the sun before it reaches the glass.

In the Gondomar hills, is triple glazing worth it?

It depends on the altitude and the house. On colder slopes it can pay off. Ask the installer to compare double and triple for your home. Triple is heavier, so the frame and hardware must cope.

I have an old stone house. Can I replace the windows?

You can. Ask the installer to look at the state of the opening and the wall before deciding. In an old house, the joint matters as much as the window. A good replacement improves comfort without changing how the house looks.

Will a new window fix road noise?

It helps, if the glass and gaskets are chosen for it. Tell the installer where the road is and which rooms face it. For homes next to busy roads, ventilation should be planned too, because an open grille lets sound through.

I live near a river beach. Any special care?

Near the river the air is damper and some homes are shut for part of the year. Ask for windows with their own ventilation and good seals, and air the home when you can. That reduces mould in the corners.

I live in Rio Tinto, Fânzeres or Foz do Sousa. Can I ask?

Yes. Write your parish in the request. We do not install: we pass the request to installers who work in that area. If you know the rough altitude of the house, say so too.
