About Funchal

Funchal is the capital of the Autonomous Region of Madeira and the island’s largest city, with over 105,000 inhabitants (2021) and 76 km². It lies on the south coast, and the municipality borders Câmara de Lobos to the west, Santa Cruz and Machico to the east and Santana to the north. It has ten parishes, among them Santo António, the most populous, Monte and Santa Maria Maior, where the Old Town is.

The city sits in a natural amphitheatre: the bay on one side, mountains to the north and east and volcanic peaks to the west. The built-up area runs from sea level up to 800 metres, and the island rises above a thousand metres behind. The name comes from fennel, a herb that covered the valley when the first settlers arrived in 1424.

Funchal became a city in 1508. In the 15th and 16th centuries it was a great sugar centre, and from the 17th century British wine merchants changed the city’s life and architecture. Today tourism, trade and services dominate, and the port is one of the most important for cruises in Europe.

Madeira’s international airport is in the neighbouring municipality of Santa Cruz. Within the municipality, the climate changes a lot from altitude to altitude, and that weighs on the choice of window.

What the climate of Funchal asks of windows

Funchal has mild temperatures all year, with an average of 19.6 degrees, according to Wikipedia. There are two seasons without big temperature differences: from October to April it rains regularly, with highs between 20 and 25 degrees, and from May to September it rains little, with highs between 22 and 26. Humidity stays near 70% all year, and in the high areas it is common to have cloud, rain and wind when the sky is clear by the coast. In June the bay can be covered in cloud, the so-called Funchal's helmet.

Funchal climbs from the sea to the hills, in an amphitheatre of slopes. Cold is rare, but the air is always damp and the high areas see cloud and rain. The bay lies far below.

The window here has to cope above all with damp and rain, more than with heat.

Section notes Sample text · to be reviewed
  1. Wind and rain at altitude

    On the high slopes wind and rain are more frequent than by the sea, and so is cloud. Parishes such as Monte catch more water. Window sealing and water drainage weigh more there than in the lower city.

  2. Salt on the bay front

    Near the port and the seafront there is salt in the air, and hardware feels it over time. Choose resistant hardware and rinse the window with fresh water now and then. On streets further up, salt matters less.

  3. Humidity always near 70%

    According to Wikipedia, humidity stays near 70% all year, and the air feels warmer than the temperature says. Without ventilation, mould appears on walls and in cupboards, especially on slopes that catch clouds. Windows with trickle ventilation and an extractor in the kitchen and bathroom help.

  4. Gentle sun, heat without extremes

    Summers are mild, with highs between 22 and 26 degrees. South-facing rooms heat up, but less than in the south of the mainland. In June, with the cloud helmet, there can be days on end without direct sun, and then the light that comes through the window is most appreciated.

In Funchal damp counts more than heat or cold. The installer checks everything on site.

Homes in Funchal

The homes in the area change what is worth asking of the windows.

  • New apartments

    Many blocks climb the slopes, on steep streets. Windows facing the bay catch wind and sun; higher up come rain and mist. On the upper floors, sealing and drainage of the shutter box count more.

  • Historic centre

    The Old Town and the centre have old houses and buildings, some centuries old. In historic areas, ask the town council about facade rules. Check the state of the plaster and sills, where damp from the air builds up easily.

  • Detached and semi-detached houses

    In high parishes, such as Monte, there are old houses and estates with views over the bay, once summer retreats of the wealthy because of the mild climate. It rains more there and damp weighs. Well-sealed windows and regular ventilation prevent mould.

Funchal's helmet and the damp home

In June it is common for the bay to stay covered in cloud for days on end. It is nicknamed Funchal’s helmet, according to Wikipedia.

With 70% humidity and few sunny days in a row, laundry is slow to dry and walls turn damp. These help:

  • windows with trickle ventilation;
  • an extractor in the bathroom and kitchen;
  • furniture kept away from outer walls;
  • airing a few minutes in the driest hours of the day.

Check with the installer that the new window does not seal the home completely.

Each altitude, its own climate

The built-up area of Funchal runs from sea level up to 800 metres. According to Wikipedia, it is common to have cloud, rain and wind at higher altitudes when the sky is clear by the coast.

That means two homes in the same municipality may call for different windows:

  • in the lower city and by the sea: salt, sun and freer wind;
  • halfway up the slope: the balance, with constant damp;
  • at high altitudes, such as Monte: more rain, mist and damp, and cooler nights.

Tell the installer in which parish the home is.

General notes

Why do I have mould in Funchal when it is never cold?

Humidity is always around 70%. Colder walls and closed homes trap that water. Ventilating daily and having windows with trickle ventilation helps, and so does moving furniture away from outer walls.

Does the window cope with wind and rain in the high areas?

It does, if well sealed and fitted. In high parishes, such as Monte, where it rains more, sealing, drainage and fixing count. Ask the installer to check the shutter box and the sill.

Do I need triple glazing in Funchal?

The climate is mild all year, so double usually does. Triple weighs more and rarely pays off.

See the guide Double or triple glazing.

Can I change the windows of an old house in the Old Town?

Ask the town council: it is a historic area and facade rules may apply. In a block, speak to the residents' association too. The installer helps check the state of the plaster and sill before the work.

I live in Câmara de Lobos or Santa Cruz. Can I ask?

Yes. Write your town in the request. Funchal has ten parishes, and the nearest neighbours are Câmara de Lobos, Santa Cruz, Machico and Santana. Also say the approximate altitude of the home.

Do windows protect from port and city noise?

A well-sealed window with double glazing reduces street and port noise. In homes beside avenues or near the cruise areas, it is worth asking for glass with better acoustic insulation. The installer can explain the options.
