About Amadora
Amadora lies north-west of Lisbon, next to Sintra, Oeiras and Odivelas. According to Wikipedia, since 2021 it has had the highest population density in Portugal, with 7,637 people per square kilometre. The relief is gentle hills, between 50 and 200 metres, with the Mira hills in the far north and a depression in the middle.
The territory was born from the split of the old parish of Benfica, in 1885-1886. The main nucleus was Porcalhota, on the royal road that linked Lisbon to Sintra, and it later got a railway station. In 1907 the various farmsteads were renamed Amadora. It became a town in 1937 and only in 1979 its own municipality, after belonging to Oeiras.
By 1962 it was the most populous place on the Sintra line, because of people arriving from the countryside, industry and the closeness to Lisbon. Today it is mostly residential, but it has retail parks, factories, such as the glassworks at Falagueira-Venda Nova, and company headquarters.
There are parks such as Parque Central and Parque Aventura, where a stretch of the Águas Livres Aqueduct can be seen. Amadora BD, a comics festival, has run since 1989. Among tall buildings, busy streets and green spaces, a window in Amadora has to deal with noise and heat more than with wind.
What the climate of Amadora asks of windows
According to Wikipedia, Amadora lies in a transition area between two kinds of Mediterranean climate, with a slight influence from the sea. The mean annual temperature is about 16 °C and about 740 mm of rain falls a year. Wikipedia does not describe the seasons in more detail, so the climate of the Lisbon region applies: hot, dry summers and cool, rainy winters. Being a few kilometres from the coast, the sea breeze tends to arrive weaker.
Amadora is a small, heavily built-up municipality north-west of Lisbon, with low hills and little wind. Noise, dust and the heat of the facades count more than the rain.
The drawing shows a flat in a city block. The four letters mark the air, the noise, the cold and the sun, and the table below says how the options fare.
- Still air and dust
Amadora sits among low hills and many buildings, far from the coast, so the wind is weak on many streets. With the air stiller, dust from building sites, roads and dry ground gets in through gaps and settles on tracks and sills. A good seal and a simple clean of the frames already make a difference.
- Traffic and train noise
The town grew along the royal road and the railway to Sintra, and even today the avenues and the line are close to many homes. The noise is daily, early in the morning and in the late afternoon. Double glazing and good seals lower the sound, but the shutter box needs attention too.
- Rain and cold in the blocks
With about 740 mm of rain a year, almost all in autumn and winter, walls turn damp and cold. In apartment blocks, the old frame and the shutter box are the coldest spots in the room, and that is where drops and stains appear. A new window only solves it if these spots are treated.
- Sun on the facades
Density is very high and there is little tree shade near the homes. On south and west facades, the summer sun heats the walls and then the rooms, even at night. Outside blinds and a light colour on the frame help keep the flat cooler.

| Condition | Level | Climate sheet |
|---|---|---|
| Summer | High | Hot, with a lot of wall in the sun. |
| Winter | Medium | Cool, without extreme cold. |
| Rain | Medium | Rain mostly in autumn and winter. |
| Wind | Low | Less exposed than the coast. |
| Sun | High | Plenty of sun on south and west facades. |

In flats, the installer should also look at the shutter box and the wall finish. The rest is confirmed on site.
Homes in Amadora
The homes in the area change what is worth asking of the windows.
Older apartment blocks
There are many apartment blocks of different eras, close to one another. In older buildings, worn frames and shutter boxes let in cold and noise, and every opening should be measured on site. Always ask for a visit before the final price.
Historic centre
Around the old Porcalhota, by the station and the royal road, lies the oldest part of town. Walls there can be thick and uneven, and the edge finish between window and wall needs more care than in recent blocks.
Detached and semi-detached houses
In areas further from the avenues there are houses, with more wall facing outwards. Openings are larger and catch more summer sun and more winter cold. Good glass and an outside sun shield count more than the type of frame.
Local notes
Near the railway line and the avenues, noise is felt in the morning and in the evening. Ask the installer to talk about noise, not only cold.

Buildings close together and little shade
According to Wikipedia, Amadora is the most densely populated municipality in the country. On narrow streets between tall buildings, little light reaches the window, and the neighbour’s window is often close. That changes the choice: a slim frame lets in more light, and glass that does not darken too much counts a lot for the flat. If your window faces a light well or an inner courtyard, tell the installer, because the air and noise there differ from the street. Also ask whether the window faces a tree-lined street or a wall, because shade in front changes the summer heat.
The Sintra line, the metro and everyday noise
Amadora is on the Sintra railway line, and the metro has been growing in the municipality. People who live near a station or an avenue with buses notice noise at certain times of day. On the site visit, the installer can listen and see where the noise comes from: the street, the train or the shutter box. Ask for a window sealed all the way round, double glazing and a well-sealed edge with the wall. If the noise is mostly at night, say so: the installer may recommend a different solution from that for someone who only hears it by day.
General notes
I live in a block in Amadora. Can I change the windows?
In many buildings the facade has rules, for example on colour and design. It is usually the residents' administration that decides. Ask for an answer in writing before requesting quotes. If the building is older, also ask whether there is any plan for the facade.
The train and the street are noisy. What helps most?
A window sealed all round with double glazing cuts a lot of sound. Panes of different thickness help a little more with low rumbles. Noise also comes in through the shutter box and the cracks at the edges. So it is best for the installer to see the window fitted, and not only the glass data sheet.
Why does my flat get so hot in summer?
There is a lot of concrete, little tree shade and the town is very dense, which stores heat. If the window faces south or west, the sun comes in for hours. Outside blinds hold back more heat than curtains inside. Glass with a solar coating also helps.
I have damp and mould in the bedrooms. Does a window fix it?
It helps, but only in part. The damp comes from the air in the home and from cold walls. Airing every day, even briefly, and not drying laundry indoors reduces the problem a lot. If the new window is well installed and the shutter box is treated, drops on the glass go down.
Is triple glazing needed in Amadora?
Usually not. Winter is cool and damp, but without extreme cold. Good double glazing, well installed, normally does the job for a flat in a block. Triple is heavier and only makes sense if the facade is very cold or the noise is very strong.
Can I ask for quotes for Queluz or Carnaxide?
Yes. Give your street or parish in the request. JanelaCerta does not install windows: it passes the request to installers who work in your area. The more exact the address, the better.
