A tilt and turn window (janela oscilobatente or oscilo-batente in Portuguese, the word you will see on quotes) opens in two ways with one handle: sideways like a door, or tilted at the top with just a gap. Most of what goes well or badly with it comes down to two things: how you use the handle, and the hardware, the metal parts hidden in the frame.

The general comparison of opening types is in Window opening types. This guide covers what you live with after installation: how to use it, what fails and what to ask before you pay.

The three handle positions

According to the manual of Winkhaus, a German hardware maker, the handle has three positions:

  • Pointing down: the window is closed and locked.
  • Horizontal: the sash (the part that opens, with the glass) can swing open fully to the side.
  • Pointing up: the sash can tilt at the top.

Other makers follow the same logic (HOPPE uses 0°, 90° and 180°), but some models change the order. If there is no instruction sticker on the frame, ask the installer to show you the three movements.

How to use it

  1. To air the room a little: with the sash closed, handle up. The top tilts in and the sash is held by a metal arm.
  2. To open fully: handle horizontal, then pull the sash towards you.
  3. To close: bring the sash against the frame and only then move the handle down.

Common mistakes

  • Moving the handle while the sash is open to the side. Without protection the sash can end up hanging on its bottom hinge only, and fall. Modern hardware has a lock against this wrong move, but do not force the handle if it resists.
  • Leaving the sash open in wind or a draught. Siegenia, another maker, says to close and lock the window when it is windy.
  • Hanging weight on the sash or leaving something caught between sash and frame. The same maker warns against extra loads and against pressing the sash against the wall.

Ventilating in the tilted position

The gap gives air without opening everything. The problem is leaving it that way all day. The Umweltbundesamt, the German environment agency, says windows left tilted for long periods raise energy use a lot, and that the wall next to the window cools quickly, which can lead to mould from condensation. It recommends opening the window wide two to three times a day, about five minutes per room. That is a German recommendation: the right time depends on temperature and wind.

Even so, the idea holds here: airing briefly with the window wide open costs less heating than leaving a gap all day. If your home is damp, see Window condensation and Energy efficiency.

Security and the tilted position

With the handle down, metal rods lock the sash to the frame at several points. In the tilted position those locking points release, and the sash hangs only on the bottom hinges and the metal arm at the top. It is the position where the window is least locked.

Roto, a hardware maker, sells a set that reinforces the tilted position: steel strike plates, a lockable handle and drill protection. It says the window meets burglary resistance class RC 2 even tilted up to 65 mm. That is the manufacturer’s claim, with no independent test on the page.

What can be said safely:

  • A tilted window is still an opening. If you go out, or sleep with a window within reach from the street, close it fully and, if the handle has a key, lock it. I found no PSP (Portuguese police) advice specific to tilted windows.
  • Burglar-resistant windows need special hardware or materials. If you want an RC class (standard EN 1627), ask for it in writing in the quote.

What fails and what to do

At least once a year, both makers ask for the moving parts to be lubricated. Siegenia adds the locking points, oil or grease free of acid and resin, and checking that the safety parts are firm and not worn. Clean with mild, diluted pH-neutral products, never with acids or abrasive pads.

What you notice What to do
Stiff handle Lubricate the moving parts. If that does not help, do not force it: call the installer
The sash rubs on the frame or no longer seals well May only need adjusting. The installer adjusts height, side position and pressure with a hex key
The sash comes out of place or drops at the bottom Stop using it and call the installer

The adjustment is small: in the Winkhaus manual, the corner bearing near the bottom hinge adjusts by about 3 mm in height and 2 mm sideways. That manual is written for installers. Siegenia says adjusting, replacing parts and lifting the sash off and on should be done only by the installer. Ask what the warranty covers on the hardware: see Warranties and certificates.

Maximum sash size and weight

Each maker sets a maximum size and weight per sash, and for larger sashes may require extra arms. An older example (Winkhaus, 2009): hardware approved up to 100 kg, reaching 150 kg with two extra parts. Current values vary by series.

Glass weighs about 2.5 kg per m² for each millimetre of thickness. I worked it out for a 1.0 × 1.4 m sash (1.4 m²), glass only:

  • double glazing with two 4 mm panes: about 28 kg
  • triple glazing with three 4 mm panes: about 43 kg

The frame comes on top. See Double or triple glazing and profile classes. If the window is very wide, ask whether a fixed pane plus one opening sash would make more sense.

When it is not the best choice

  • Curtains, furniture and worktops. The open sash takes space and, tilted, the top moves into the room. Measure the free space: How to measure windows. If space is short, look at sliding windows.
  • Very windy spots. A sash open to the side catches the wind, and Siegenia says to close and lock it. If the window faces an exposed spot, raise it with the installer.
  • When you do not need tilting. A plain side-hung window has fewer moving parts and fewer things to adjust.
  • Small children. According to an article on Doutor Finanças, there are two measures: a handle with a key, which stops the window opening, and reversing the opening order so the handle releases the tilted position first and not the full opening. Ask whether your maker offers these options.

What to ask in the quote

  • Hardware brand and series, and whether they are tested to EN 13126-8, which covers durability, strength, security and function.
  • Maximum weight and size of each sash in the quote.
  • Protection against wrong operation and the instruction sticker.
  • A handle with a key, if there are children or the window is on the ground floor.
  • RC class, if you want burglary resistance.
  • Maintenance: what the installer does and when.

The price of a tilt and turn window rises with sash size and weight, the glass, the hardware series, a handle with a key and the security class. For reference figures see PVC window prices. To compare offers, use the quote checker.
