About Vila Real

Vila Real is in Trás-os-Montes, on a plateau about 450 metres up, on the headland where the Corgo and Cabril rivers meet. The oldest part, the Vila Velha, sits above the Corgo cliffs, and in the background are the Alvão and Marão hills. The municipality has about 50 thousand residents in 379 km² and 20 parishes, and borders Sabrosa, Peso da Régua, Santa Marta de Penaguião, Amarante, Mondim de Basto, Ribeira de Pena and Vila Pouca de Aguiar.

The region has been inhabited since the Palaeolithic, and nearby is the Panóias rock sanctuary, from Roman times. The present city was born in 1289, with the charter of King Dinis. At over 700 years old, it was called the Court of Trás-os-Montes, because of the houses with coats of arms of the nobles who settled here, linked to the Marquesses of Vila Real. Carved coats of arms can still be seen on facades.

The city grew a lot from 1986, with the creation of the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro, which brought more people and life. Nearby are the Mateus Palace, a baroque work attributed to Nicolau Nasoni, and the Alvão Natural Park. The city is also known for the Vila Real International Circuit, car races held since 1931.

Life in the municipality is split between the city, with new districts and the Vila Velha, and dozens of hill and vineyard villages tied to the Alto Douro wine region. In the villages, houses are stone and built for the cold.

What the climate of Vila Real asks of windows

According to Wikipedia, Vila Real has some continentality, because the Marão and Alvão hills act as natural barriers. Winter is relatively long, with about 25 days a year at temperatures below zero, and it usually snows at least once a year at heights above 600 metres. Summer is moderately hot, with high maximums but notably cool nights, and there are sometimes sharp temperature swings. For windows, winter commands: insulation and sealing matter more than anything.

Vila Real is on a plateau, with the Alvão and Marão hills acting as a barrier. Sea air barely arrives and winter is long.

Here the window is above all a barrier to cold: sealing and insulation matter more than anything else.

  1. Cold draughts

In winter, cold plateau air comes in through any gap. Good gaskets and careful installation cut the draughts. In the villages of the Alvão and Marão, the house catches the cold wind with no shelter.

  2. Dry air and dust

Far from the sea the air is drier, and dirt roads and building sites raise dust. Dust builds up in the tracks, and gaskets dry out if not looked after. A simple clean, once a season, is enough.

  3. Cold and frost

There are about 25 days a year below zero, according to Wikipedia, and it can snow on higher ground. Double or triple glass and an insulating frame save on heating. In stone houses, the opening should be well sealed to the granite.

  4. Summer sun and cool nights

By day summer heats up, by night it cools. Light colours and solar-treated glass help by day; airing early in the morning cools the home. On south-facing rooms, external blinds stop the sun.

Homes in Vila Real

The homes in the area change what is worth asking of the windows.

  • Traditional houses

There are houses with coats of arms and stone houses with thick walls and tall windows, many with carved arms on the facade. When replacing, ask what may be changed in the outside design, and ask the installer to respect the proportions of the opening. In the villages, granite houses hold winter cold.

  • Historic centre

In the Vila Velha, on the headland of the Corgo and Cabril, the streets are old and the houses pressed together. There may be rules for facades, so talk to the council. The opening should be measured on site, because old walls are rarely true.

  • New apartments

In the newer part of the city, near the university and the avenues, there are apartment blocks. With long winters, insulation and sealing of the windows count, and the shutter box is often the weak point. On high floors, plateau wind is also felt.

Long winters, cool nights

Wikipedia mentions sharp temperature swings and snow, at least once a year, above 600 metres. At home, that means:

  • Heating works for many months, so windows weigh on the bill.
  • The shutter box and the opening are places where cold gets in.
  • In summer, cool nights let you air the home early in the morning.

It is worth raising this with the installer at the start.

Houses with coats of arms and hill villages

Vila Real was the Court of Trás-os-Montes, and still has houses with carved coats of arms. Around it, villages in the Alvão and Marão have stone houses built for the cold. Each type needs different care:

  • In houses with coats of arms, the facade design is part of their identity. Ask for windows that respect the proportions.
  • In village houses, small windows and thick walls call for well-sealed joints.
  • In new houses, the shutter box and the joint decide comfort.

Tell the installer what kind of house it is and which village or parish it is in.

General notes

How many cold days are there in Vila Real and how does that change windows?

Wikipedia mentions about 25 days a year below zero. So what matters most is insulation and sealing. Ask for a frame and glass designed for cold winters. The shutter box also deserves attention.

Is triple glazing worth it in a home in Vila Real?

In cold homes with many windows it can pay off. For others, double is enough. Ask for a comparison, thinking about the hours a day the home is heated. Triple is heavier, and the frame must cope.

I have a house with a coat of arms, or a stone house. Can I replace the windows?

You can, but how the facade looks matters. In a historic house it is worth checking with the city council what may be changed. Ask the installer to respect the shape of the opening.

Why is there water on the glass in winter if the air is dry?

Cold glass condenses the damp the home itself makes, even with dry air outside. Cooking, showering and drying clothes help create it. Airing for a few minutes and having glass that insulates solves it in most cases.

Do the cool summer nights help choose a window?

They do: with cool nights, it is worth being able to air the home early in the morning. Tilt-and-turn windows let air in without standing wide open. Ask the installer to explain the options.

I live in a village in the municipality. Can I ask?

Yes. Write the village or parish name in the request. It goes to installers who cover the area; JanelaCerta does not install. Since the municipality is large, give the rough altitude too.
