About Tomar

Tomar is a town in the Middle Tagus, in the Santarém district, in the historical province of Ribatejo. The municipality covers 351 km², has 11 parishes and about 40,700 inhabitants (2011), of whom close to 14,000 live in the town. It borders Ferreira do Zêzere, Abrantes, Vila Nova da Barquinha, Torres Novas and Ourém.

The Nabão river crosses the town and Wikipedia describes the area as one of the most fertile in the country, good for olive oil, figs and vines. The landscape has mostly olive trees, pines, fig trees and eucalyptus. The old town by the river was called Nabantia, and its inhabitants are still called Nabantinos.

The town grew around the Convent of Christ, ordered by the Templars in the late 12th century, and was a centre of maritime expansion in the 15th century, when the Order of Christ was led by Prince Henry. The Convent has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983. Tomar also has the Synagogue and the Matchbox Museum, with about 43,000 specimens.

It was an industrial centre, with paper, spinning and wood-product mills, and today lives a lot from tourism. The Festa dos Tabuleiros takes place every four years, in early July. Living by the river means dealing with damp, especially in the low areas.

What the climate of Tomar asks of windows

Wikipedia has no climate data for Tomar. The town lies in the Nabão river valley, in a fertile part of the Middle Tagus, in the interior of the Ribatejo. So damp by the river, hot summers and cool winters are to be expected, with rain mostly in the cold months. We give no figures because we do not have them from a reliable source. We ask the installer to confirm on site, house by house, especially in the low areas.

Tomar sits in a fertile valley, crossed by the Nabão river. Water and greenery are at the door.

Wikipedia gives no climate figures. So we speak of what is to be expected: damp by the river, cool winters and hot summers.

Section notes Sample text · to be reviewed
  1. Valley air

At the bottom of the valley the air stands still more and nights cool down. That is why cold draughts are strongly felt inside homes by the river. A continuous seal all round, gaskets in good shape and a firm lock avoid those problems.

  2. River damp

Next to the Nabão the air can be more humid, and there are low areas where mist forms in the morning. Damp attacks old wood and unprotected metals. Profiles that neither rust nor rot and hardware that is easy to clean mean less work.

  3. Cool winters

Rain and moderate cold are to be expected in winter. Water gets in mostly through the joints, and cold glass inside gives droplets and mould. A frame that insulates and a home that is aired a few minutes a day avoid much of the problem.

  4. Summer heat

Summers in the Middle Tagus are hot. Light colours and outside blinds are enough on many facades. In rooms facing west, solar-control glass can help, and the cooler valley nights allow ventilating at the end of the day.

Homes in Tomar

The homes in the area change what is worth asking of the windows.

  • Historic centre

By the river and the old churches there are multi-storey houses and narrow streets. In historic areas the facade may have rules, especially near the Convent of Christ, which is a World Heritage Site. Ask the council before ordering and ask for careful measuring.

  • Traditional houses

In the villages among olive groves, fig trees and vines there are old farm houses with small windows and thick walls. They lose heat in winter and heat up in summer. When replacing windows, check the state of the render and wood around the opening.

  • New apartments

In the newer districts there are blocks with more recent windows, where ventilation is often missing. Well-closed homes hold the damp from the kitchen and shower. Ask for windows with an airing opening, and use any grilles there are.

Local notes

Local rules

The Convent of Christ is a World Heritage Site. Near listed monuments there may be rules for facades; check with the town council before changing the outside look.

A house by the Nabão river

The river runs through the town, and the low areas can have more damp and morning mist. If the house is by the water, check whether the damp comes from the wall, the floor or the air before blaming the window.

A new window helps keep the glass warmer and reduce droplets, but the cause of the damp may be elsewhere, such as a leak or an uninsulated wall. Ask someone to look at the whole house. Once the cause is dealt with, the window completes the job.

A town of mills and tourism

Tomar was an industrial centre, with paper, spinning and wood-product mills. Today tourism has a big weight, mainly because of the Convent of Christ, the Synagogue and the museums, and many old buildings have been restored.

People living in old houses or converted buildings find tall openings, thick walls and windows that are not all alike. Ask for careful measuring, ask about solutions that respect the design of the building and check whether the council has facade rules. A good window improves comfort without spoiling the look.

General notes

I live by the Nabão. Does the damp come from the window?

Not always. It can come from the wall, the floor or the air of a low area. A tighter window helps against cold, but without airing the damp stays inside the house. Open the windows a few minutes a day and look for leaks.

Can I change windows near the Convent of Christ?

Near listed monuments there may be rules for facades. Speak to the town council before changing how the outside looks. Bring photos and say whether you want to keep the lines of the old window, so the installer can propose a close solution.

Does it rain a lot in Tomar?

Wikipedia gives no figures. In a Middle Tagus valley, winter rain is to be expected, so the joint around the window deserves attention. Water almost always gets in there, and not through the glass.

I have a house in the countryside, among olive groves. Which windows suit?

Isolated houses take more wind and dust. Ask for firm locks and profiles that are easy to clean. If the house is closed part of the year, ask for windows with their own ventilation to avoid mould, and hardware that does not need much care.

Is double glazing enough for a valley winter?

In many homes, yes, if the seal is good. Triple only pays off on cold or very exposed walls, and it is heavier. Ask the installer to compare the two options for your home and explain the difference.

I live in Torres Novas or Entroncamento. Can I ask?

Yes. Write your locality in the request and we pass it on to installers in that area. We do not install, we only connect the person asking with the person who does the work. Say whether the house is by a river or in a high area, because damp changes a lot.
