About Santarém

Santarém is the capital of the Ribatejo and of the Santarém district. The city sits on a plateau, on the right bank of the Tagus river, and from the Portas do Sol you can see the floodplain and the river, one of the most celebrated views in the country, according to Wikipedia. The municipality covers 552 km², has 18 parishes and about 58,700 inhabitants (2021), of whom more than 30,000 live in the city.

The municipality borders Porto de Mós, Alcanena, Torres Novas, Abrantes, Chamusca, Alpiarça, Almeirim, Cartaxo, Azambuja and Rio Maior. It belongs to the Oeste e Vale do Tejo region and the Lezíria do Tejo sub-region, but the Ribatejo remains present in how people identify themselves.

The city is very old. It was contacted by Phoenicians, Greeks and Carthaginians, and the Romans, from 138 BC, made it Scalabis, the main trading post of the middle Tagus and an administrative centre of Lusitania. The current name comes from Saint Irene, a young woman whose legend tied her to the city and the river.

Santarém is called the “Capital of the Gothic”, but Wikipedia notes that only a glimpse of its heritage remains today. There are the Alcáçova and the walls, the Torre das Cabaças and churches such as Santa Maria de Marvila. It has a bullfighting tradition, with the Monumental Celestino Graça bullring. Being up high, looking over the river and the fields, usually means homes more exposed to sun and wind.

What the climate of Santarém asks of windows

According to English-language Wikipedia, Santarém has a Mediterranean climate (type Csa). Winters are mild, humid and rainy, with 15 to 16 °C by day and 6 to 7 °C at night, and about 15 days of frost a year. Summers are hot and dry, with 29 to 31 °C by day and 15 to 16 °C at night. The city hit a record of 46.4 °C on 7 August 2023, the highest in the country that year up to that day.

Santarém sits on a plateau, above the Tagus valley and the floodplain. The air is open and the sun hits many facades head on.

Winter is mild but rainy, with frost. Summer is hot and dry, with heat records.

  1. Plateau wind

The town sits on a plateau above the Tagus valley, open to the wind. In the streets by the walls and the Portas do Sol, wind comes from the river and the floodplain almost without obstacles. A continuous seal and a firm lock stop air getting in and whistling.

  2. Floodplain dust

On dry summer afternoons, the fields around raise dust, and the wind carries it to the windows. Clear tracks and smooth profiles make cleaning easier. On sliding windows, clean the tracks before summer ends.

  3. Winter rain and frost

Winters are damp and rainy, with frost on about 15 days a year. A frame that insulates avoids cold walls and glass, and the condensation droplets that show in the morning. The joint between window and wall must stand up to winter rain.

  4. Summer heat

Summers are hot and dry, and temperatures have reached 46.4 °C. Outside blinds and solar-control glass stop the heat before it gets in. On south and west facades, you notice the difference straight away on July and August afternoons.

Homes in Santarém

The homes in the area change what is worth asking of the windows.

  • Historic centre

The historic area has many churches and old streets, by the walls and the Alcáçova. Old houses call for careful measuring and made-to-measure windows, and the council may have facade rules. Ask before ordering, especially near monuments.

  • Traditional houses

In the villages of the municipality there are single-storey farm houses with small windows, which lose heat in winter and get very hot in summer. Replacing windows changes comfort, but also look at the roof and the walls. Ask the installer to look at the whole house.

  • New apartments

Around the centre there are modern blocks, facing the floodplain or the town. South and west facades take the strong summer sun. For a very exposed living room, solar-control glass and outside blinds can do more than curtains.

From frost to 46-degree heat

Wikipedia records about 15 days of frost a year and a record of 46.4 °C on 7 August 2023. The same window must cope with cold January nights and very hot August afternoons.

So frame insulation matters as much as solar-control glass. PVC profiles cope well with both ends. What changes comfort is the glass, the outside blind and the fitting. Ask the installer to explain the choice for each orientation of your home.

A town up high, with a view of the Tagus

Santarém sits at the top of a plateau, and the Portas do Sol is a viewpoint over the floodplain and the river. People who live up there have the view, but also wind and sun head on.

In homes next to the viewpoint, windows facing the river take the afternoon sun and the wind. It is worth asking about solar-control glass, wind-resistant blinds and a firm lock. In sheltered streets of the historic centre, the essentials are respecting the design of the facade and sealing well.

General notes

I live near the Portas do Sol, with a view of the Tagus. Are sun and wind stronger?

On a viewpoint, the house is open to wind and sun. A continuous seal and solar-control glass are worth it on the facades facing the river. Ask for blinds that can take the wind.

It has hit 46 degrees in Santarém. Which windows cope with that?

PVC profiles are made for strong heat. What changes is comfort inside: outside blinds and solar-control glass hold the heat back. Light colours on the frame help stop the profile from getting too hot.

Does frost damage the window?

No. Good profiles and gaskets stand up to frost. The problem is cold glass inside, which creates droplets, and water that gets in and freezes in a badly made joint. Better glass, airing the house and a good joint solve it.

Old house in the historic area: do I need a council licence?

If you change the look of the facade, speak to the council first. Also ask whether there are rules for colour and material. Near monuments and in the wall area, rules tend to be tighter than in new districts.

I live on an isolated farm in the municipality. Does anything change?

Isolated houses take more wind and dust. Ask about a reinforced seal and firm locks. Tell the installer the house is in the countryside and whether it is lived in all year, because that changes the ventilation needed.

I live in Almeirim or Cartaxo. Can I ask?

Yes. Write your locality in the request and we pass it on to installers in that area. We do not install, we only connect the person asking with the person who does the work. The floodplain is flat and open, so wind and dust are similar in the neighbouring municipalities.
