About Portalegre

Portalegre is the capital of the Portalegre district, in the Upper Alentejo, close to the Spanish border. The municipality covers about 447 km², has 7 parishes and just over 22,000 inhabitants (2021), of whom close to 14,100 live in the city, the second largest in the district after Elvas. It borders Castelo de Vide, Marvão, Arronches, Monforte and Crato.

The city lies between 400 and 600 m above sea level, in the transition between the landscape of low hills to the south and west and the mountain system of the São Mamede range, which rings it to the north, east and south-east. Wikipedia describes the area as a passage between the drier, flatter Alentejo and the more humid, mountainous Beiras.

The soils are varied, with schist, greywacke, limestone and quartzite. The mountains have a very particular landscape, flora and fauna, which is why part of the municipality is in the Serra de São Mamede Natural Park. According to a legend, the city was founded by Lysias in the 12th century BC, though today this is thought to be fantasy.

The city is known for the Portalegre tapestries and convent sweets, and has castles, the gates of the old wall, churches and viewpoints over the landscape. For people living here, the house feels both extremes: ice in winter and Alentejo heat in summer.

What the climate of Portalegre asks of windows

According to Wikipedia, Portalegre has a Mediterranean climate, with large swings between the hottest and coldest months. In winter the temperature can drop below freezing, and in summer highs reach 38 or 39 °C, because the city is in the Alentejo, the hottest region of the country in summer. Between 1971 and 2000, the extremes were 40.4 °C and -4.5 °C, and there are records of -8 °C and 43.3 °C in 1941.

Portalegre lies at the foot of the São Mamede mountains, between 400 and 600 m. It is neither the flat Alentejo nor the Beiras: it is a transition zone.

Winters can freeze and summers are very hot. The house feels both extremes.

  1. Mountain wind

The city is at the foot of the mountains, and wind comes down and crosses the streets. On the slopes and at the viewpoints, houses take it head on. Firm locks and gaskets in good shape stop the air. Ask the installer to look at the most exposed windows first.

  2. Dry air and dust

In summer the air is dry and there is road and field dust. Smooth PVC and clear tracks mean less work. The mountains and their schist and quartzite soils raise dust on windy days, so it is wise to clean the tracks regularly.

  3. Winters that freeze

Some winters drop below freezing, and -8 °C was recorded in 1941. Insulating the frame well avoids ice and droplets on the glass. An altitude of 400 to 600 m makes the city colder than the flat Alentejo, so quality double glazing is the minimum, and triple deserves to be compared.

  4. Alentejo heat

Summer highs reach 38 or 39 °C. Outside blinds and solar-control glass stop the heat before it gets in. On west-facing facades, the afternoon sun heats most. Nights in the mountains tend to cool down, and ventilating at the end of the day pays off.

Homes in Portalegre

The homes in the area change what is worth asking of the windows.

  • Historic centre

The old quarter has the gates of the old wall, churches and palaces. Houses are of stone and render, with deep openings, and call for careful measuring. Near monuments and in the old quarter there may be facade rules: ask the council before ordering.

  • Traditional houses

There are zones of schist, limestone and quartzite, and old houses tend to use the local stone, with thick walls. Replacing windows in these walls calls for care with the joint. Ask them to check the state of the stone and render before closing the opening.

  • Detached and semi-detached houses

On the slopes around there are houses with views, some very exposed to wind and the afternoon sun. They have more walls in the open air and more windows to seal. It is worth planning the work facade by facade and starting with those facing the prevailing wind.

Portalegre in photos

Between the dry Alentejo and the mountains

Portalegre sits in a transition zone, with more varied terrain than the rest of the Alentejo, according to Wikipedia. The higher districts tend to be cooler, and a street can have morning sun and afternoon shade.

Ask the installer to look at the orientation of each facade, not just the city. A house up high, facing the mountains, asks for different things than a house sheltered in the valley. The same street can have a cold, damp floor and a hot, dry one.

Natural Park and stone houses

Part of the municipality is in the Serra de São Mamede Natural Park. The landscape, flora and fauna of the mountains are very particular, and anyone with a house in that area lives in a protected environment.

In protected areas there may be rules for works and for how houses look. Before asking for quotes, check with the council or the park authority. In stone houses in the mountains, the joint with the stone is the most delicate point of a new window. Ask for a quote that explains the joint and the ventilation.

General notes

Is Portalegre colder than the rest of the Alentejo?

It lies between 400 and 600 m, next to the mountains, and there can be ice in winter. The choice of window weighs more on cold than in Beja or Évora. Windows with good insulation and a careful seal make more difference here than on the flat Alentejo.

I live in a stone house in the mountains. Can I replace just the window?

You can, but the joint with the stone is the delicate point. Ask them to check the wall around before closing the opening. If the stone is damaged, it is wise to treat it first, so the new window sits well.

What copes best with 38-degree summers?

Shade outside, solar-control glass and light profiles. The window alone does not stop the sun as much as a blind does. On west-facing facades, the afternoon sun is the hardest, and outside protection pays off most there.

Are there rules for windows near the old walls?

Near monuments and the old quarter there may be facade rules. Ask the council before changing how the outside looks. Bring photos of the building and say whether you want to keep the design of the old window.

I live in the São Mamede mountains, inside the natural park. Do the rules change?

In protected areas there may be rules for works. Check with the council or the park authority before ordering. Tell the installer the house is inside the park, so the quote already takes that into account.

I live in Castelo de Vide or Marvão. Can I ask?

Yes. Write your locality in the request and we pass it on to installers in that area. We do not install, we only connect the person asking with the person who does the work. Castelo de Vide and Marvão are in the mountains, so cold and wind weigh as in Portalegre or more.
