About Figueira da Foz

Figueira da Foz lies on the Atlantic coast, in the Coimbra district, at the mouth of the Mondego river. The municipality covers about 379 km², has 18 parishes and close to 59,000 inhabitants. It borders Cantanhede, Montemor-o-Velho, Soure and Pombal, and to the west has the ocean.

The place has very old settlement. It was taken from the Moors in 1064, with the capture of Coimbra. In the 16th century, piracy led to the building of the Santa Catarina Fort. The town grew with its port and shipbuilding, from the 18th century, became a town in 1771 and had its greatest progress in the late 19th century, with the arrival of summer visitors. Cod fishing off Newfoundland also passed through here.

Today Figueira lives from tourism, the sea and services. It has the oldest casino in the Iberian Peninsula, a bullring and a huge stretch of sand, which Wikipedia says is the widest urban beach in Europe. Among the parishes are Buarcos e São Julião, Lavos and Quiaios.

The municipality stretches to Cabo Mondego, in the Serra da Boa Viagem, which is a Natural Monument, and to the rice fields of the Mondego valley, where the Santa Olaia archaeological site lies. It is a city of sea and river, where wind and sand are part of daily life.

What the climate of Figueira da Foz asks of windows

According to Wikipedia, Figueira da Foz has a Mediterranean climate (type Csb). The yearly average is around 15 °C and about 600 mm of rain falls a year. In winter, temperatures range between 7 and 14 °C and rarely drop below freezing. In summer they range between 15 and 25 °C and can pass 35 °C in heat waves. Winter is unsettled, summer dry and sunny, and in the afternoon the wind blows moderate, sometimes strong, from the north-west.

Figueira da Foz sits where the Mondego river meets the Atlantic. There is sea on one side and estuary on the other, so wind and humid air are constant.

Winter is unsettled and summer dry. For the window, wind and sand weigh more than cold.

  1. North-west wind

In the late afternoon the north-west wind can blow hard, especially in summer. Windows facing that direction take it head on. Locks that close tight and intact gaskets stop air and whistling, and give more comfort on windy days.

  2. Sea spray and sand

The sea and the wide beach leave salt and sand in the air. Sand gets into the tracks of sliding windows and makes the lock work harder. Choose hardware for a coastal setting and clean the tracks now and then, with a brush and a damp cloth.

  3. Unsettled, damp winter

In winter the weather is unsettled, and air from the sea and the Mondego estuary is humid. A window that seals well keeps the glass less cold and avoids droplets and mould, but the home also has to ventilate. Winter nights rarely drop below freezing.

  4. Dry, sunny summer

Summer is dry and sunny, with peaks above 35 °C in heat waves, and sometimes days of cloudy sky. Solar-control glass and outside blinds help, especially on south-facing facades. Near the sea, the breeze cools the nights.

Homes in Figueira da Foz

The homes in the area change what is worth asking of the windows.

  • Historic centre

In Buarcos, the old fishing village, there is a fortress, a pillory and old houses on narrow streets. They call for careful measuring and windows that respect the character of the houses. In an old area there may be facade rules: ask the council before ordering.

  • New apartments

In a tourist city, holiday flats are common, many closed outside summer. With the home closed, damp stays trapped without ventilation. Ask for windows with an airing opening and hardware that resists salt.

  • Detached and semi-detached houses

In the parishes by the coast, such as Buarcos and Quiaios, houses are more exposed to sea wind and sand. They take rain head on and salt in the air. Plan the replacement facade by facade and give priority to those facing west and north-west.

North-west wind in the late afternoon

In summer, especially in the late afternoon and early evening, the wind blows moderate, sometimes strong, from the north-west, according to Wikipedia. Windows facing north-west take it head on.

Ask the installer to look at the orientation of the windows in the house and the state of the joints. A badly made joint lets air through and, on rainy days, water. Multi-point locks and double gaskets help on very exposed facades, and make a difference on windy nights.

Holiday flat, closed house

In Figueira da Foz there are many holiday homes, used mainly in summer. With the house closed for months on end, damp from the sea gets in and stays, and mould appears.

Ask for windows with their own ventilation, and leave a small airing opening whenever possible. Ask the installer about hardware that resists salty air and shutters or blinds that can take the wind. If someone you trust passes by the house, asking them to open the windows now and then also helps.

General notes

Do sand and wind ruin windows?

They do not ruin them, but sand builds up in the tracks and the locks work harder. Cleaning the tracks now and then and choosing coastal hardware solves it. In sliding windows, sand is the main enemy, so it is worth asking for tracks that are easy to clean.

Is the wind worse in Buarcos or Quiaios than in the centre?

In the seaside parishes a home tends to be more exposed to wind and salt than in the city centre, next to the river. Tell the installer where you live. It may justify more resistant hardware and extra attention to the seals.

Does estuary humidity cause mould?

It can, especially in closed homes. Airing and leaving a ventilation grille open take the damp out. Tighter windows without airing can even make mould worse, so ventilation is part of the solution.

Does triple glazing make sense by the sea?

Winters rarely drop below freezing, so double is usually enough. Triple is heavier and can pay off on very cold or very exposed walls. Ask the installer to compare the two options for your home.

I have a holiday flat near the beach. What should I check?

If the home stays closed outside summer, ask for windows with their own ventilation and hardware that resists salt. Also look at the blinds or shutters: the north-west wind puts them to the test. It helps to have someone open the house now and then.

I live in Lavos or Quiaios. Can I ask?

Yes. Write your locality in the request and we pass it on to installers in that area. We do not install, we only connect the person asking with the person who does the work. Parishes in the municipality have different exposures to sea and wind, so say where the house is.
