About Évora

Évora is the capital of the Évora district and of the Central Alentejo, on the great Alentejo plain. The municipality is the fifth largest in the country, covering about 1,307 km², with 12 parishes and close to 53,600 inhabitants (2021), of whom more than 40,000 live in the city. The average altitude is around 240 m, and the surrounding landscape is cereals, cork oaks, holm oaks, vineyards, olive groves and rice fields.

The region has a history of more than five thousand years, as nearby megalithic monuments show, the Anta do Zambujeiro and the Almendres Cromlech. The Romans made Évora an important town, and Wikipedia notes it is the only Portuguese city that belongs to the Network of Oldest European Cities.

The historic centre is one of the richest in monuments in the country, which is why Évora is called the Museum City. In 1986 it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Praça do Giraldo, with its arcades, is the heart of the city, and Wikipedia also highlights the Garcia de Resende Theatre, the Évora Museum and the Public Library.

For anyone thinking about windows, Évora has two faces: the centre inside the walls, with its own rules and thick-walled houses, and the city outside them, with more recent blocks and houses. It is also the hottest district capital in the country in summer.

What the climate of Évora asks of windows

According to Wikipedia, Évora has a Mediterranean climate, with rain concentrated in winter. The yearly average temperature is 16.6 °C, with 24.5 °C in August and 9.3 °C in January. In summer it is the hottest district capital, followed by Beja. Records of -4.2 °C and 45.4 °C have been logged. Snow is rare: one of the last times was on 26 January 2006, the day it also snowed in Lisbon.

Évora sits on an open plain, with no mountains or sea nearby. The sun is strong and the wind runs without obstacles.

Summer is among the hottest in the country, and winter rainy and cool. The house has to hold the heat out in one season and keep it in the other.

Section notes Sample text · to be reviewed
  1. Plain wind

On the open plain the wind blows with little shelter, and homes outside the walls feel it more. A good seal and a firm lock stop air and dust. On facades facing the fields, gaskets should also be intact and well seated.

  2. Cereal and soil dust

Around town there are cereal fields and dry soil, and dust gets in through gaps and collects in the tracks. Smooth profiles and tracks that are easy to clean make maintenance simpler. On sliding windows, it is worth cleaning the tracks before and after summer.

  3. Winter rain and cold

Rain is concentrated in winter and nights can get cold, down to -4.2 °C on record. A well-insulated frame avoids cold walls and glass and the condensation droplets that show in the morning. In homes with thick, whitewashed walls, the joint with the wall is decisive.

  4. Summer heat

Évora is the hottest district capital in summer, with a record of 45.4 °C. Shade outside and solar-control glass are worth more than any profile colour. Outside blinds, shutters or louvres stop the sun before it reaches the glass.

In Évora, summer heat rules. The installer confirms on site what suits your facade, especially in the historic centre.

Homes in Évora

The homes in the area change what is worth asking of the windows.

  • Historic centre

The historic centre is a World Heritage Site, and inside the walls the houses are old, thick-walled, with deep openings and windows of varied shapes. Before changing windows on a facade, ask the council what is allowed on the outside and ask for careful measuring.

  • Traditional houses

Old Alentejo houses have thick, whitewashed walls, which hold the cool in summer. Old windows are the weak point, in heat and in cold. In rural areas, isolated farmsteads take more wind, dust and sun than homes in town.

  • New apartments

Outside the walls there are more recent blocks and houses, where the summer sun matters for window orientation. On south and west facades, solar-control glass and outside blinds help most. Ask the installer to look at the orientation of each room.

Évora in photos

The hottest summer, thick walls

Évora is the hottest district capital in summer, with a record of 45.4 °C, according to Wikipedia. Old houses have thick, whitewashed walls, which help. For the window, what counts is stopping the sun before the glass.

Outside blinds or shutters are worth more than the frame colour. Opening the windows at night and closing them in the morning helps keep the house cool through the day. If you feel the heat coming through the glass, ask about solar-control glass, especially on west-facing facades.

Inside the walls, their own rules

The historic centre of Évora has been a World Heritage Site since 1986. The houses and streets are part of the image that is to be protected, so changing a facade window may have rules.

Before asking for quotes, take photos of the facade and speak to the town council. Ask whether there are rules for material, colour and design. Tell the installer what was agreed, so the quote respects those limits. Outside the walls, rules tend to be simpler, but it is wise to check.

General notes

Can I change the windows of a house inside the walls?

The historic centre is a World Heritage Site, so rules for the facade may be strict. Ask the council before ordering. Bring photos and say whether you want to keep the design of the old window. This avoids surprises and delays.

Does PVC cope with the Alentejo heat?

PVC profiles are made for strong sun. Light colours heat up less, and shade outside makes the biggest difference. Ask the installer for a quality profile and solar-control glass on the most exposed facades.

Do thick, whitewashed walls change the choice of window?

They change the joint. In thick walls the window sits deep in the opening, and care is needed with the fit and the render around it. Ask for measuring at several points and ask how the joint with the lime is made.

Does Évora freeze in winter?

The lowest recorded temperature was -4.2 °C, according to Wikipedia, and snow is rare. Cold nights call mainly for a frame that insulates and a glass that stays less cold inside. Triple is rarely needed.

I have an isolated Alentejo farmhouse. What should I watch for?

Isolated houses take more wind, dust and sun. Ask for firm locks, a good seal and shade outside, and say the location in the request. If the house is used only part of the year, ask for windows with their own ventilation.

I live in Arraiolos or Montemor-o-Novo. Can I ask?

Yes. Write your locality in the request and we pass it on to installers in that area. We do not install, we only connect the person asking with the person who does the work. The Alentejo plain is similar in the neighbouring municipalities, so heat and dust weigh in a similar way.
