About Castelo Branco

Castelo Branco is the capital of the Castelo Branco district and of the Beira Baixa, in the interior of Portugal, about 50 km from the Spanish border. The municipality is the third largest in the country by area, at 1,438 km², with 19 parishes and about 52,000 inhabitants, of whom more than 33,000 live in the city. It borders Fundão, Idanha-a-Nova, Vila Velha de Ródão, Proença-a-Nova and Oleiros.

The city began next to a pre-Roman hillfort and, by the early 12th century, there was a settlement on top of the Cardosa hill, with the town growing down the slope. The city lies at 384 m and the castle at 490 m. Today the city spreads over the flat areas around the hill. The soil is mostly granite, and the Ponsul and Ocreza rivers pass nearby, both tributaries of the Tagus.

Unlike other cities in the region, Castelo Branco did not grow on the textile industry, so it did not suffer as much from the closure of the mills. The industrial zone employs about 4,000 people, with companies in refrigeration, agri-food, electronic components, plastics, metal structures and glass and stone processing.

The city has the Episcopal Palace garden, with its statues and tiles, and is known for the Castelo Branco embroidery, on linen bedspreads. For people living here, dry air and marked seasons call for windows designed for both ends of the year.

What the climate of Castelo Branco asks of windows

According to Wikipedia, Castelo Branco has a Mediterranean climate, influenced by continentality, with little humidity through the year. The yearly average temperature is around 15.5 °C, with about 25 °C in July. Rain is most plentiful from October to January, with more than 100 mm a month, and July and August are dry. In January lows reach -4 °C, with records of -7 °C, and snow sometimes appears.

Castelo Branco lies inland, between the castle hill and the valleys of the Ponsul and Ocreza. The air is dry through the year.

Winter brings cold and rain, and summer is hot. The house has to cope with both seasons.

  1. Cold draughts

In a city of dry air, what you feel most at home are the cold winter draughts. A good seal all round is worth more than an extra pane. It is wise to check the gaskets and lock on every window before November.

  2. Inland dust

The dry, hot summer raises dust from the fields and the roads. The tracks of sliding windows collect that dust and need regular cleaning. Smooth profiles and easy-to-reach tracks make cleaning simple and make the window last longer.

  3. Cold winter nights

January lows reach -4 °C, and heavy rain comes from October to January. A cold frame and glass chill the walls around the window. A frame that insulates well avoids cold walls and the droplets that show on them in the morning.

  4. July sun and heat

July and August are the driest months, with about 25 °C on average in July and much higher maxima. South and west facades heat up a lot. Outside blinds and solar-control glass hold the heat back, and the cooler nights help with airing.

Homes in Castelo Branco

The homes in the area change what is worth asking of the windows.

  • Historic centre

In the old quarter, near the castle, the Episcopal Palace and the 16th-century doorways, there are narrow streets and stone houses. They call for careful measuring and windows that respect the old proportions. Ask the council whether the facade has rules before ordering.

  • Traditional houses

There are granite houses with thick walls, which tend to keep cool in summer but lose heat through old openings. Replacing old windows is one of the steps that changes winter comfort the most. Check the wood around the opening is sound before fitting.

  • New apartments

In the flat districts around the hill there are more recent blocks, many of flats. With dry air, what weighs most is winter cold, and July heat on sunny facades. Ask the installer to look at the orientation of each room.

Dry air, cold nights

Because the air is not very humid, droplets on the glass are less frequent than on the coast. That does not mean cold does not count: with lows of -4 °C in January and records of -7 °C, winter nights chill the walls and the glass.

Insulation of the frame and the glass is the main point. Ask for double glazing with good insulation, multi-chamber profiles and a leak-free fitting. If the house has granite walls, the joint between window and stone is where comfort is won or lost.

A town on the way between the Tagus and the mountains

Castelo Branco lies between the Tagus, to the south, and the mountains of the Beira Baixa. Wikipedia highlights its political and strategic importance through history, and today the city is a services and trade centre for the municipality.

In the municipality there are very different zones: the city, at 384 m, and villages isolated in the countryside. A village house, far from the city, takes more wind and dust than a flat in the centre. Say in the request where the house is, and whether it is lived in all year or only part of it.

General notes

With such dry air, are there still droplets on the glass?

Fewer than on the coast, but there can be on very cold nights, when the glass goes icy. Airing the house and having a glass that stays less cold inside fixes most of it. The kitchen and bathroom, which produce steam, are the rooms most affected.

Do PVC windows cope with the cold?

PVC insulates well against cold and needs no painting. With double glazing and a good seal, it is usually enough for the city's cold nights. In granite walls, the joint with the stone remains decisive.

Do summers call for special glass?

July and August are hot and dry. On south and west-facing facades, solar-control glass and outside blinds can help a lot. On north-facing facades, it is normally not needed.

I live in an old stone house. Can I replace just one window?

You can, but the effect is bigger if you replace all of them in the room, because the old ones keep letting cold air through. Start with the most exposed, to the north and the wind. Ask the installer to check the state of the stone and render around the opening.

I live in Idanha-a-Nova or near the border. Can I ask?

Yes. Give your locality in the request; we do not install, we only pass the request on to installers who work in that area. Also say if the house is isolated, because wind and dust change a lot between a village and the city.

Is triple glazing worth it in Castelo Branco?

Winter is cold but short, and snow is occasional. Double glazing is usually the starting point. Triple can pay off on north-facing or very exposed walls, but it is heavier, and should be compared with double for the specific case.
