About Caldas da Rainha

Caldas da Rainha lies in the West, in the Leiria district, about 93 km from Lisbon via the A8. The municipality covers 255.69 km², has 12 parishes and about 59,000 inhabitants. It borders Alcobaça, Rio Maior, Cadaval, Bombarral and Óbidos, and to the north-west has the Atlantic.

The town lies about 10 km from the sea, but three parishes of the municipality, Foz do Arelho, Salir do Porto and Serra do Bouro, are right on the coast. The lowest point of the municipality is sea level and the highest reaches 255 m.

The town’s history is tied to its hot springs. According to tradition, in 1484 Queen Leonor saw people bathing in strong-smelling water, tried it and was cured. She had a spa hospital built, which Wikipedia says is the oldest purpose-built one of its kind in the world. In the 19th century, with the fashion for spas, the town had its greatest splendour.

Today Caldas is known for pottery, for arts and ceramics schools, and for the Praça da República, where there is an open-air fruit and vegetable market every morning. It is a town just inland, with the Atlantic on the doorstep.

What the climate of Caldas da Rainha asks of windows

Wikipedia has no climate data for Caldas da Rainha. The town is about 10 km from the Atlantic and in the West, so some influence from the sea is to be expected: summers cooled by the breeze and damp winters, as in neighbouring towns, and more wind and salt in the parishes near the coast. Here we only give what is reasonable to expect and ask the installer to confirm on site, house by house.

Caldas da Rainha lies a little inland, about 10 km from the sea. The Atlantic is still felt, especially in the coastal parishes.

Wikipedia gives no climate figures, so we only say what is to be expected in the West: damp winters and mild to warm summers.

Section notes Sample text · to be reviewed
  1. Western wind

Atlantic wind reaches this far, stronger in the coastal parishes and weaker in the town centre. A continuous seal and a firm lock stop air getting in. In the seaside parishes, hardware that copes with wind and salt is also worth it.

  2. Salt in the coastal parishes

In town, 10 km from the sea, salt matters little, but in Foz do Arelho, Salir do Porto and Serra do Bouro it pays to choose hardware and finishes made for salty air. A rinse with fresh water now and then does good. Tell the installer which parish the house is in.

  3. Western rain and damp

Rain and humid air are to be expected in winter. Water gets in mostly through the joints, and damp turns into droplets on the glass and mould if the home is not aired. Ask the installer to check the joint with the wall and the drainage of the tracks.

  4. Summer sun

Summer brings lots of sun, with the sea breeze easing the heat, especially near the coast. Light colours and outside blinds are enough on many facades. In rooms strongly facing west, solar-control glass may be worth it.

Wind and salt arrive from the water against the window. Indoors, damp air rises. The summer sun comes through the glass and warms the room.abcd

Homes in Caldas da Rainha

The homes in the area change what is worth asking of the windows.

  • Historic centre

In the centre, near the spa hospital and the park, there are 19th-century houses from the time when spas were fashionable. Tall, old windows call for careful measuring and often for made-to-measure windows. Ask the council whether there are facade rules.

  • Detached and semi-detached houses

In the coastal parishes, such as Foz do Arelho, there are houses and holiday homes, more exposed to wind and salt. If the house is closed part of the year, ask for windows with their own ventilation. Hardware that resists salty air makes a difference.

  • New apartments

Around the centre there are more recent blocks with already tighter windows. What is often missing is ventilation, and damp builds up in the kitchen and bathroom. Windows with an airing opening help a lot.

Town or coastal parish?

The municipality has an inland part and a coastal part. In town, 10 km from the sea, salt matters little. In Foz do Arelho, Salir do Porto and Serra do Bouro, on the Atlantic, wind and salt count as in a beach town.

Write the parish in the request: the advice we give changes from one zone to the other. In a house by the lagoon and the sea, it pays to look at hardware, joints and ventilation more carefully than in a house in the centre of Caldas.

A spa town and a pottery town

Caldas was born from hot springs and is today also pottery country, with arts and ceramics schools and several museums. The centre has 19th-century buildings, from the time when wealthier classes came to the spa.

People living in these houses find tall windows, old woodwork and irregular openings. Ask for careful measuring, ask about solutions that respect the old design and check whether the council has facade rules. A new window should improve comfort without spoiling the character of the building.

General notes

I live in Foz do Arelho. Does salt weigh as in a beach town?

Yes, near the coast wind and salt count more than in the town centre. Choose hardware for salty air and wash the window with fresh water now and then. Tell the installer the house is on the coast, because that changes the recommendations.

Can I replace windows in an old house near the spa hospital?

In old 19th-century houses the openings tend to be tall and uneven. Ask for careful measuring and check with the council about the facade in a historic area. Ask the installer for examples of windows already made for old houses.

Does coastal air reach the town?

In part: the town is about 10 km from the ocean. The effect is smaller than at the beach, but the damp air of the West should be noticeable in winter. If you live in the centre, salt matters little; if you live near the lagoon or the sea, it matters more.

Double or triple glazing for a home in the West?

Damp winters and mild summers call mainly for a good seal and double glazing. Triple only pays off on cold walls or with road noise. Ask the installer to compare the two options and explain the difference in weight.

My home in Salir do Porto stays closed in winter. What care should I take?

Closed homes hold damp. Ask for windows with their own ventilation and leave a small airing opening. Hardware that resists salt and rinsing the tracks in spring help keep the window working well.

I live in Óbidos or Bombarral. Can I ask?

Yes. Write your locality in the request and we pass it on to installers in that area. We do not install, we only connect the person asking with the person who does the work. Distance from the sea changes the choice of hardware, so say where the house is.
