About Bragança
Bragança is a border city, near Spain, in the north-east of Portugal, capital of the Terras de Trás-os-Montes. The municipality is very large, at 1173 km² with 39 parishes, and has few residents: about 35 thousand, a density of 29 per square kilometre. It borders Castile and León, Vimioso, Macedo de Cavaleiros and Vinhais.
Even in Roman times there was an important settlement here. The name comes from Brigantia, a Celtic word meaning hill or high fortress. In 1130 the land passed to Fernão Mendes de Bragança, brother-in-law of King Afonso Henriques, and gave its name to the House of Braganza, the last royal dynasty of Portugal.
The river Fervença runs through the city, rising in the Serra de Nogueira. It has a castle, the keep and the Domus Municipalis, and the Cathedral and the churches of São Tiago and Santa Maria. The Polytechnic Institute of Bragança brings many young people, and there has been no train since the Tua line closed in the early 1990s.
In the municipality’s villages, such as Montesinho, Gimonde and Rio de Onor, the Festa dos Rapazes and the Caretos are still held in winter. The atmosphere is of high country, of people who know cold and fire well.
What the climate of Bragança asks of windows
According to Wikipedia, Bragança has a cool-summer Csb climate: typically warm, dry summers with sunny days, and long, cold, damp winters, which are the rainiest season. It can snow often, but it varies a lot from year to year: some winters have few snow days and others many. A window should insulate very well against cold and seal out air. Even so, long sunny spells also occur in winter.
Bragança lies in the far north-east, near Spain. Summer is dry and winter is long, cold and, at times, snowy.
Here the window works mostly in winter: it must keep the warmth in and the cold out.
- Cold air and draughts
Cold winter wind looks for any crack. Careful installation and good gaskets make the home feel warmer. In high villages, the wind blows with nothing to slow it.
- Dry summer air
In summer the air is dry and dusty, especially on dirt roads. Clean gaskets and tracks and do not let the window open and close with effort. Fine dust gets in through any crack, so sealing counts twice.
- Cold, frost and snow
Winters are long and cold, and some years have many snow days. A frame with a thermal break and double or triple glass save on heating. On snowy days, a wet, frozen joint can damage the wall.
- Dry summer sun
Summer days are sunny and dry, with warm nights. Light colours and solar-treated glass help the home not to overheat. External blinds stop the sun before the glass.

Homes in Bragança
The homes in the area change what is worth asking of the windows.
Traditional houses
In the villages of the municipality there are stone houses, with thick walls and small windows, made for the cold. When replacing, do not leave gaps in the sealing and check the joint to the granite or schist. In old houses, a bigger window may change the look: ask for advice on the design.
Historic centre
Around the castle and the Domus Municipalis, the old town is protected. There may be rules for facades, so talk to the council before asking for quotes. The streets are narrow and the buildings stone, and the opening should be measured on site.
New apartments
In the newer town there are more recent apartment blocks. With long winters, heating weighs on the bill and insulation counts. The shutter box and the window joint are the most common weak points.

Long winter, warm home
In Bragança the winter is long and the cold bites. What is worth checking before replacing windows:
- Whether the frame has a thermal break, so cold does not pass through the profile.
- Whether the shutter box is insulated, because it is often a weak spot.
- Whether the joint between window and wall is well sealed.
A good window in a badly sealed wall loses part of its effect.
Stone villages and winter festivals
In the municipality there are villages such as Montesinho, Gimonde, Baçal and Rio de Onor, where the festivals of the lads and the caretos are still held at year end. The houses in these villages are stone and made for the cold:
- Thick walls hold cold; a badly sealed joint lets it through.
- Small windows and wooden doors need care when replaced.
- Many homes have a fireplace or wood stove, and smoke, dust and damp call for windows that are easy to clean.
Tell the installer which village you live in and whether the house is a permanent home.
General notes
In Bragança, what weighs more in choosing windows, cold or heat?
Cold, without doubt. Winter is long and some years have a lot of snow. So insulation, sealing and the joint weigh most. Summer heat is dry and weighs far less.
Is triple glazing worth it in Bragança?
In cold homes, with many windows or very exposed, it can pay off a lot. Triple is heavier, so the frame must cope. Ask for a comparison for your home.
What should I do about the shutter box?
It is a spot where cold gets in easily. Ask for the box to be insulated or swapped for a better one. Ask the installer what they recommend, and check the joint to the wall.
I have a stone house in a village in the municipality. Which window should I choose?
One with good insulation and careful sealing. Thick stone walls hold cold, so it is worth looking at the wall around the opening before deciding. In old houses, keep the facade design.
We have a fireplace at home. Does that change the choice of windows?
A little: with a fireplace, the home needs air for combustion, and a very airtight window may need an air inlet. Talk to the installer and to whoever looks after the fireplace, so the home is warm and safe.
I live in a village far from the city. Can I ask?
Yes. Give the village or parish name in the request. Since the municipality is large, say where it is; the request goes to installers who cover that area. JanelaCerta does not install.
