About Aveiro

Aveiro is a city in the Aveiro district, next to the Atlantic, about 63 km from Coimbra and 70 km from Porto. The municipality covers 197 km², has 10 parishes and an unusual shape: it includes islands inside the Ria de Aveiro and the parish of São Jacinto, a strip of land almost 25 km long by the sea that closes the ria on the west.

The name comes from an old word meaning “river mouth”. In the late 16th and early 17th century the channel between the ria and the sea closed, the port stopped working and still water brought disease, which made many people emigrate. Later, Aveiro grew again and was one of the important cod-fishing ports.

Today it is a hub for its port, railway, university and tourism. Among the parishes there are urban areas, such as Esgueira, Aradas, Santa Joana and São Bernardo, and rural ones, such as Requeixo and Oliveirinha. In the centre there are Art Nouveau buildings and a museum devoted to that style.

Seen from inside a home, Aveiro is a city of water: canals, ria and sea are part of the landscape and of the air you breathe.

What the climate of Aveiro asks of windows

According to Wikipedia, Aveiro has a Mediterranean climate with mild summers (type Csb). Days above 30 °C are very rare, fewer than 10 a year on average, and summers are dry. Winters are mild and rainy, and days below freezing average about 2 a year. The Ria de Aveiro helps moderate temperatures, but keeps the air humid for much of the year.

Aveiro lies between the ria and the sea. Water can be seen almost everywhere, and the air brings humidity and a little salt.

The climate is mild, without hard frosts or extreme heat. Even so, humid air weighs more than cold or heat.

  1. Wind from the ria and sea

Aveiro is flat and open to the ria and the Atlantic, so wind arrives with little shelter and brings fine rain. Windows with intact gaskets and a firm lock stop air and whistling. In São Jacinto, between the ria and the sea, the wind weighs even more.

  2. Salty air from the ria

Brackish water from the ria and the sea leave some salt in the air, which shows on hardware and metals over time. Choose profiles and hardware made for that setting, and wipe with a damp cloth now and then. With PVC the profile does not rust; locks and hinges are what deserve attention.

  3. Damp and winter rain

Winters are mild but rainy, and the ria air is humid for many months. In well-sealed homes that damp turns into droplets on the glass and mould in the corners. A tight window helps if the home also ventilates; otherwise the problem can even get worse.

  4. Mild but dry summer

Summers are dry, with few days above 30 °C. The sun is there and comes through the glass, but it rarely asks for more than good double glazing and blinds on south-facing facades. Here the priority is usually damp, not heat.

Homes in Aveiro

The homes in the area change what is worth asking of the windows.

  • Historic centre

In the centre there are old Art Nouveau houses, with decorated windows and colourful facades along the canals. These windows are usually made to measure, and the outside look matters a lot. In a protected area there may be facade rules: ask the council before ordering.

  • New apartments

In the newer urban parishes, such as Santa Joana and São Bernardo, there are many modern blocks near the university. In well-sealed homes, humid air from the ria leaves droplets on the glass without ventilation. Windows with their own airing opening solve a good part of the problem.

  • Detached and semi-detached houses

In the more rural parishes and on the ria islands there are houses with gardens, more exposed to water and wind. They get more rain and more humid air than a sheltered house in the centre. It is worth looking at the joint between window and wall, where water tends to get in.

The ria, humid air and the home

The Ria de Aveiro moderates the temperature: according to Wikipedia, days below freezing are rare, about 2 a year. The price of that mildness is humid air, especially in winter.

In a home by the canals, check whether the damp is only on the glass or also shows on the wall and ceiling. When it is only on the glass, a better window and regular ventilation solve it. When it is on the wall, the cause may be something else, and it is wise to talk first to someone who knows about building work.

Art Nouveau and windows with history

Aveiro has an Art Nouveau museum and several buildings in this style in the centre. People living in such a house usually want to keep the character of the facade, and that calls for care: the new window should respect the proportions of the old one.

There are PVC solutions that follow the lines of old frames, but the final decision rests with the town council in protected areas. Ask the installer for examples of windows already made for old houses, and ask how long it takes to measure, make and fit to size.

General notes

Does the air from the ria ruin aluminium?

With a finish made for coastal areas and a wash now and then, it holds up well. PVC does not rust. Hardware, such as hinges and locks, deserves attention, because that is where salt does its damage first. Ask for materials made for a salty setting.

I live in an Art Nouveau building in the centre. Can I change the windows?

In a protected area there may be facade rules, so speak to the town council first. Also ask for very careful measuring, because old openings are rarely straight. Tell the installer you want to keep the proportions and lines of the old window.

There is mould in the bedroom corners, near the canal. Where do I start?

With ventilation and the walls. Mould grows from humid air trapped in the home and from cold surfaces. A tighter window without airing can even make things worse, so open the windows a few minutes a day and keep a ventilation grille open.

Do the summers call for solar-control glass?

Wikipedia says summers are mild, with few days above 30 °C. On most facades, solar control is optional. It can make sense in a living room facing south or west, where the afternoon sun comes in head on.

I live in São Jacinto, between the ria and the sea. Does anything change?

On that strip of land wind and salt weigh more than in the city centre. Choose resistant hardware, a good finish and wash the window regularly. Tell the installer where you live, because exposure is greater than in almost the rest of the municipality.

Can I ask if I live in Ílhavo or Murtosa, across the ria?

Yes. Write your locality in the request and we pass it on to installers in that area. We do not install, we only connect the person asking with the person who does the work. Aveiro, Ílhavo and Murtosa share the same ria, so the climate of the home is similar.
