About Almada

Almada lies on the south bank of the Tagus, right opposite Lisbon, at the neck of the river. It borders Seixal to the south-east, Sesimbra to the south and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. It is small in area but has many people: 174,030 inhabitants in 2011, in about 70 km².

The relief has two parts. The plateau, with Almada, Pragal, Cova da Piedade and Cacilhas, ends in cliffs above the river, with slopes over 50 %. The Costa da Caparica plain, by the Atlantic, does not rise above 11 metres, and the highest point of the municipality, at Raposo, is 124 metres.

There are five parishes: Almada, Cova da Piedade, Pragal and Cacilhas; Caparica and Trafaria; Charneca de Caparica and Sobreda; Costa da Caparica; and Laranjeiro and Feijó. The beaches run from Costa da Caparica to Fonte da Telha, about 13 km, and the Medos woodland and the fossil cliff are protected landscape.

In the 19th century weaving, shipbuilding, mills and cork arrived. From the late 1940s to the early 1970s, many people came looking for work and homes. Almada went from town to city in 1973. Today it is linked to Lisbon by ferry, from Cacilhas, and by the bridge, and has a light-rail metro.

What the climate of Almada asks of windows

Wikipedia has no climate section for Almada. The municipality is on the Setúbal peninsula, opposite Lisbon and by the Atlantic, so the regional climate applies: Mediterranean, with hot, dry summers and mild, damp winters. Inside the municipality there are two faces: the estuary side, to the north, with more damp, and the ocean side, to the west, where windsurfing and kitesurfing happen because of the wind. The land runs from flat beach to high cliffs.

Almada faces Lisbon, on the cliffs at the neck of the Tagus. Behind, the land falls away to the sea at Costa da Caparica.

River on one side, ocean on the other: the wind changes and so does the salt. The drawing shows a house on the cliffs above the river.

Section notes Sample text · to be reviewed
  1. Estuary and Atlantic wind

On the cliffs above the river and along the beaches, the wind is constant and strong, which is why people windsurf and kitesurf at Costa da Caparica. Gusts come from the sea and the estuary and meet large openings. A well-sealed window, with a latch at several points, is worth more here than expensive glass.

  2. Sea salt at Costa da Caparica

By the beaches, between Costa da Caparica and Fonte da Telha, there is salt in the air all year. Further inland and on the river side it is felt less. Salt attacks hardware and leaves marks on the glass. A tough finish and a fresh-water rinse from time to time extend the life of the window.

  3. River damp

By the Tagus and in the gullies of the cliffs the air is damp, and poorly aired bedrooms get mould. In old blocks in Cacilhas and Cova da Piedade, worn frames let in cold, damp estuary air. Windows that insulate well and daily ventilation are the basis.

  4. South and west sun

Openings facing south and west catch strong sun at the end of the afternoon. On the cliffs, with an open view of Lisbon and the river, the light is good, but heat comes in. Outside blinds and glass with a solar coating hold back the sun without losing the view.

Wind and salt arrive from the sea against the window. Indoors, damp air rises. The summer sun comes through the glass and warms the room.abcd

On the cliffs and near the beaches, ask the installer to talk about hardware and seals against wind. The rest is confirmed on site.

Homes in Almada

The homes in the area change what is worth asking of the windows.

  • Older apartment blocks

Old Almada, Cacilhas and Cova da Piedade have old buildings and houses on sloping streets. Old windows let in the damp cold of the estuary, and walls need a careful edge finish. Ask for measurements on site and check whether the building has facade rules.

  • Detached and semi-detached houses

At Costa da Caparica, Charneca and Sobreda there are many houses and low homes, nearer the beaches or the plateau. Salt and wind arrive unobstructed, and large openings catch the sun. Reinforce seals and latches.

  • New apartments

In Laranjeiro, Feijó and the more recent urban areas there are many apartment blocks, with more road and metro noise. Windows on high floors are the most exposed to wind and sun.

Cristo Rei and the cliffs above the river

The Christ the King Sanctuary, opened in 1959, stands at 215 metres above sea level, with a 360-degree view. Homes on the cliffs above the Tagus share the same open view and the same wind. People there have large windows facing Lisbon, and feel the river wind more strongly than those in the valley. Ask the installer for quality latches and double seals, and ask about the weight of the glass when openings are large, because the weight falls on the hinges. If the window is on a high floor, say so, because wind increases with height.

Costa da Caparica and the fossil cliff

Between the fossil cliff and the sea, the Costa da Caparica plain lies only a few metres above sea level and has about 13 km of beaches. The Medos National Forest, the Pinhal do Rei, faces the sea and is part of a protected landscape. Homes here take salt and wind, and also fine sand in summer, which builds up in the tracks of sliding windows. If you have sliding doors to the street or the yard, ask for tracks with good sealing brushes and clean them regularly.

General notes

I live at Costa da Caparica. Do salt and wind damage windows?

Salt attacks metals over time and wind tests the seals. PVC does not rust, but the hardware is metal. Aluminium needs a good-quality finish. Rinsing the window with fresh water now and then helps a lot.

I live on the cliffs with a view of Lisbon. What changes?

Wind and sun hit large openings head-on. Ask for strong hardware and latches at several points, and glass suited to the sun. Ask about the weight of the glass too, so the hinges can cope. You do not have to lose the view.

Can I change windows in an old block in Cacilhas?

Talk to the residents' administration and Almada town council. In old areas there may be facade rules. The installer should measure each opening on site. Only then ask for quotes.

Is winter in Almada very damp?

It is damp and mild. Water on the glass appears in poorly aired bedrooms, mostly near the river. A window that insulates well helps. Airing every day, even in the cold, is essential.

Sand gets into the tracks of my sliding door. What to do?

It is common near the beaches. Ask for well-designed tracks and sealing brushes in good condition, and clean them regularly with a damp cloth. If the door has play, more sand gets in. The installer can adjust the rollers and the brushes.

Can I ask if I live in Charneca or Sobreda?

Yes. Write your parish in the request, and it goes to the right area. JanelaCerta does not install windows. Also say whether the house is near the beach or further inland.
